what sort of an alloy results from aluminum scrap junk when melted down.
@AlloyGeek17 күн бұрын
Great question. When melting metal, the chemical composition will be roughly the average of all materials put into the melt. If you're looking specifically for 6061 or 6063, you want to avoid other scrap alloys getting into your melt. A little bit of the wrong alloy can go a long way in messing up the final chemical composition. We have helped many folks melt scrap aluminum in the USA. You will need handheld and benchtop equipment along with a furnace setup to melt like this. Melting aluminum is disruptive enough that local environmental individuals need to be notified as well.

Good question! Handheld XRFs are portable so you don't always need a test stand. However, the Niton XL2/XL3t Desktop test stand has a 14 inch wide sample stage. This is already crazy big. If you're testing things longer, it may not make sense to tests in a stand. If there is a specific sample you are trying to test in a test stand feel free to reach out on alloygeek.com! 😀

@AlloyGeek Ah, thanks. I also forgot to ask if 2 atoms of the same metal can join? Like in O2, oxygen or carbon alotropes. Have you ever heard of tin pest. My favourite metals are Aluminium, Copper, lead and stainless steel alloy. I thought an alloy was made of only metals, I did not know you can get an alloy of a metal and a none metal like steel. Cab Iron and carbon be chemically reacted, like iron sulphate, instead of just mixing together?

Hi! Thanks for the informative video! A question in Aluminium recycling: would the process of melting and casting of sorted scrap made of Alloy 6061 or 6063, affect alloy composition? resulting in different alloy and requiring additives (magnesium, silicon, Cu...)?
@AlloyGeek4 ай бұрын
This can depend on a lot of factors. In short, melting properly sorted metals like a batch of only 6061 where you have verified every single piece of 6061 as the correct alloy will yield a good melt of 6061, so long as you do not mix it or dwell it with anything else. Some factors that could cause an off chemistry mix: dirty furnace lining, dirty ladle lining, improper scrap sorting, the list goes on. However, I can tell you from experience that most important part of the entire process is what you put in the furnace to begin with.

@AlloyGeek8 ай бұрын
Yes, a handheld XRF like the one used in this video must be registered with your local state in the USA. They emit about as much xray as a dental xray. Local governments regulate them because xrays are invisible and the goal is to keep people from accidentally exposing themselves to xray. These devices are very cool! They allow you to see exactly what elemental composition (%) that is in any metal. They even tell you what the alloy is called! 😀

So if it is dishwasher safe would it be possible to dissolve that lead through the plug, or is it pretty stable, especially under that cap you had to pry off? Nice video, very informative. Keep up the good work.
@AlloyGeek8 ай бұрын
That is not my area of expertise. It appears the lead (Pb) is in some sort of polymer matrix. It's unlikely washing in the dishwasher would lead to lead contamination since soap and water typically removes lead from surfaces. We can't say for sure if the lead will leach out without testing. If you hand wash you shouldn't have any issues.
