I got a thumb fork walking staff made out of lime. it lovely. I found the sapling about ten foot long, cut down along a footpath here on central Bristol. I used a spokeshave to trim it down to the thickness I wanted and it lovely to work with, quite light and looks ok when I finished it some tung oil. You're right though - it don't have much character 😮

Dear Dai 'lovlespeeons'' Thomas, with your experience on the hegner, I'd appreciate your perspective on how the saw cuts. I have a Axminster/Pegas type scroll saw and one thing I've noticed is the blade does not move straight up and down. This is meant to help it cut quicker however it also makes the saw blade appear a bit blurred before it makes contact with the wood. Which for myself makes it a bit difficult to tell exactly where the blade will make contact with the wood. Once the blade starts cutting the blade is clear and sharp to see. The blade on your video appears remain in the same position weather it is cutting or not but it is difficult to tell. My question is, the saw blade in the Hegner is meant to go straight up and down, do you find there is any movement in the blade other than up and down which makes if difficult to see where the blade is going to cut, or have you not noticed an issue with that? Thanks

Hi, I can't say that I've ever noticed any lateral movement on the scroll saw blade when working with the Hegner. It's always done a great job for us here at our family workshop. I've only ever worked with a Hegner so can't compare with the others mentioned but I have always found the Hegner to be a great scroll saw.

@@DailovespoonsThomas thanks for the reply, I've discovered it's call pendulum motion, sort of like if you were hand sawing and would rock the saw during the stroke, it can be adjusted by turning the motor. Combined with my stigmatism it was very difficult to tell where the blade was. I've managed to turn it down greatly, so hopefully it will be more usable for myself. Would need to try the hegner before I made the switch, which isn't' so easy. Thanks keep up the good work!

Pretty cool idea. Just out of curiosity with doing the lid. Instead of gluing on a separate piece of wood on the inside have you tried just routering the inside of the lid? I'm just curious to hear your thoughts about it? Or would it make the lid to brittle and weak? Thank you for making such a wonderful video. I look forward to watching more of your content 😊.

Thank you for the video and the priceless little tips that are sprinkled all over it! It's always a great pleasure watching masters like yourselves at work! At the very end of your video, you ask the viewers to comment here with how they hold their projects down while undertaking them... And that is what basically prompted me to write this note - Not in the least because I believe I do it with any real efficiency - but really to ask for your advise as to how I could IMPROVE the efficiency of my very rudimentary setup... Because, I am running into a SERIOUS issue - and your expert opinion could be an invaluable bit of help! [Long-note Warning! Sorry about that!] I learnt rudimentary woodcarving as part of my BFA coursework, some 30-years back. Then, for the past 20+ years, life took me far away from any kind of artwork. And now, at 53, I am trying to set up a workshop again... with a primary constraint - I don't have any money! 😀 So - I brought out my 30-year old chisels and gouges - grinded, sanded oiled and polished as much of the rust off them as I could, and honed them as best as my rusted fingers would allow me to - got hold of an old, sturdy table - threw in a few rudimentary clamps (which were affordable) - and started working on small little projects... Just for my own pleasure, really! I also managed to buy myself a "Black & Decker - Workmate" (which I don't think I am fully utilizing yet!) Along with that, I have a set of four F-clamps - a 3-foot long 4 x 2 plank with some 'strategic' holes drilled into it, and a small, rotatable, bench-vise... But, my MAIN 'issue' is - the fact that I can only afford rally-hard scrap-wood pieces to work with - which is probably 'unacceptable' for the 'job'! So, I HAVE to use a mallet (a piece of bamboo, with a 'holding-notch' grooved into one end, in my case) - and hammer HARD into the pieces, even to make a small dent on them... And that creates QUITE a bit of 'shock' on the workpiece being 'held down'! When I hold the piece down with my F-clamps and hammer, they invariably get dislodged! Also, those clamps are really tedious, when it comes to making small adjustments to the the angle of the piece that meets the chisel... I saw an old Japanese Master, working on a low stool - with two parallel holes - through which he runs a looped cord - which he 'pulls' down with his legs - which wrap around the workpiece sitting on the work surface on top... And I have been trying to learn to use that trick - with my 3-foot plank, with 'strategic' holes... It works, somewhat better than the F-clamps, in terms of quick maneuverability... But, ONLY as long as I am not having to hammer hard! Any suggestions as to how I could make my very rudimentary setup 'HOLD-DOWN' my very-hard scrap-wood workpieces better??
@DailovespoonsThomas
@DailovespoonsThomas 4 ай бұрын
Hi, great to hear from you. It would certainly be worth looking at the workmate option. As you can see from the video I use a vice or a clamp. Admittedly, when using a clamp the piece can move around as you mentioned. It means you are readjusting your work on a regular basis. The vice gives a better grip when working with a mallet. I have seen other methods of holding work including dog clamps and wood carving stands. When using a vice I sometimes use the offcut from a carving to help hold it in position too. It will probably come down to a bit of trial and error and searching for a method that suits you best. Thanks again for getting in touch and supporting our KZbin channel. All the very best from us all.

@@DailovespoonsThomas ... Hey! Thanks for your response... Could you explain that bit a little more, please?!... " When using a vice I sometimes use the offcut from a carving to help hold it in position too" - I have no idea what you meant there... :-D Also, I have a 'feeling' that the Workmate CAN sort-of fulfill parts of what a wood-vise does... But the major obstacle I have been facing is - HOW to support the 'BASE' of the piece - between the two arms of the Workmate - while their sides are being sufficiently 'held' by the Workmates' asymmetrically adjustable' (and therefore, highly useful) 'arms'?! Any suggestions for that?
@DailovespoonsThomas
@DailovespoonsThomas 4 ай бұрын
@aadittoshen I cut a basic outline of the carvings I do on the scroll saw. It gives a basic shape of the project. The offcut that is left I use to grip the project in the vice more easily. It requires the starting block to have a straight edge to secure in the vice.
