This is gonna be my first PDH deck! I have been playing a high power Syr Ginger deck in normal commander that runs a similar way, and I'm pumped to bring the deck I love to a PDH table too!!!

I’m enjoying the shorter videos. The longer ones have always deterred me from even attempting to watch them. The under 1 hour is an ideal time frame and your pace of speaking lends itself to watching at 1.5x speed.

Man this has been so inspirational! Feel like I’ve been struggling to keep up with my playgroup as I have a cruel celebrant deck but I just always seem to get stomped out first, I think having the extra toughness on the commander with wispdrinker will make a big difference honestly

great review! I think hexgold slith deserves an honorable mention; activated first strike is no joke, and on curve this is just a nightmare with very minimal investment.

Thanks Birdtrap! I'm glad to us enjoyed it 😊 Hexgold Slith didn't make the cut because its gated to a single activation with Energy, which then leaves it as a fairly passable 3/2. It is however worth mentioning that it potentially plays well in Conclave Mentor, Metastatic Evangel, and maybe Kutzil. Any deck that can Proliferate the Energy counters (notably before they used up and gone) or the +1/+1 counters.

It is a single activation, however with the threat of activation, it will be treated (when turned sideways, and until it’s activated) as if it always has first strike; like in a fair exchange ( assuming nobody plays tricks to kill it, and if they are then it’s already gotten value) the opposing player will lose their creature to stop 2 damage, which most would view as a bad exchange. if it’s not dealt with like the 1st or 2nd swing, it gets pretty out of hand. In the gambit of two drop white creatures, to me, it’s up there with seeker or the way. it gives me great sword of tyr vibes, mostly in terms of “ it’s value will stand out when it’s played”; I think any mono white aggro deck loves this card. Rant over lol.

Upon further review, I rescind some of my enthusiasm; you are required to activate the first strike clause on attack, not whenever. HOWEVER, this is still a white common slith; I’ll take it!

Split second (As long as this spell is on the stack, players can’t cast spells or activate abilities that aren’t mana abilities.) Zada's ability is triggered!

Hey El Ahem 😉 that's certainly an interesting idea, perhaps with Gilanra so that Dargo draws us a card each time? The new Glimpse the Impossible is GASOLINE in that deck, and Dargo has gotten a lot of great support these last 4 sets. What partner would you pair with Dargo?!

@@CommonConnoisseurs Gilarna for sure, I actually started work on a deck couple months ago before giving up on it cuz it didn't offer any angles that Esior didn't just do better, but the spawns are just too nutty to not try out

Yeah Esior is really really good in that deck... Hard to imagine Gilanra is better there seeing as Esior provides protection for our prime win-condition and ramp isn't really a problem we need to solve for BUT who am I to say? I'm no oracle, and you're right, Green has gotten a LOT of new juice, especially in this set. Maybe there's a nugget there which really makes it worth. Ram Through alone is very sick in the deck, and so are all the Bite spells. Eager to see what you come up with ❤️ make sure to tag me with what you've got in Discord and post it in #decklists using the formatting guidelines, I'd love to see it.

Ok so you're hotter on that one, maybe I'm just not valuing it properly. I like cards that you pay for in installments and cards that play well early and late - Simulacrum certainly fits the bill there.

I definitely think it's got legs! Onboard removal like that tends to be fairly useful, especially when attached to such a cheap early play that can chip in for some damage early on. The opportunity cost is low.

Been loving rutstein. I suggest adding Ulamogs crusher if you don’t have it in there. He’s been doing work for me, putting fierce empath in tomorrow before I play with the boys. Also give me a Kutzil deck tech please! Think I’m gunna build him next but haven’t found much in the way of competitive decklists.

Been listening to these videos while I run at the gym, and deliver pizzas for work. Been loving my Vizkopa and recently my Ruttstein deck. Suprised you didn’t talk about Ulamogs crusher in the Ruttstein primer. It’s been doing really good for me along with the 7 drop green card with cascade (6/5 trample I think it’s 5GG cascade). Learning a lot about the format from you guys and I really enjoy it so far! Ty! Probably gunna try this or Kutzil next… Kutzil seems pretty bonkers just having draw in the command zone tbh.

On which power level in normal EDH would perform cPDH deck?

That is a great question, and as with many things, the answer is "It depends". Ask me in Discord (tag @papa_pauper) and I can give you a more thorough answer, as well as direct you to other conversations we've had in the server about this very topic! TLDR is that several cPDH Combo decks tend to perform well, as well as any interactive Midrange / Control deck that can submarine with a slower win condition will avoiding death to the powerful things happening at the table. Also, don't restrict yourself in EDH to playing with only Legends! Most pods don't care if you Rule 0 your cPDH deck into the game. Anecdotally, I've played Third Path Iconoclast into cEDH pods and found that it drew enough cards to participate meaningfully at the table and present a good clock. Cheers!

I think Honest Rutstein might struggle at an EDH table due to the presence of powerful wraths that would set it back significantly. That said, your recovery is pretty good on Rutstein, since you get creatures back when it dies.

It seems like you're implying spells that CAN target a creature but are targeting a noncreature when you cast them, are still getting the discount? Is this how it works?

Yes that is correct! Spells that CAN target a creature get the discount, regardless of whether we target a creature when we cast the spell.
