Before watching this video: I liked Odyssey, but there is no denying that the game is suffering from what I call "open world syndrom". Most open world games - including highly praised ones like BotW - are just quantity over actual quality. Now, with SMO and BotW, it's not that there is an actual lack of quality - these are highly polished games after all - it's more that, instead of having to collect 999 moons with at least half of the moons being rewards for even the most generic shit imaginable, I prefer the approach of SMG, where every single star feels special. It's the same with BotW and the stupid seeds, but to a lesser extend. These games want to impress you with high numbers (999 moons, or over 100 shrines) but those numbers are ultimately pointless. What good are 1000 shrines, when they all look the same, have the same music and all follow one of maybe five patterns? What good are 10.000 moons to collect, when you get 1000 moons from talking to some stupid NPC over and over again? Obviously I'm exaggerating, but quantity over quality seems to be the overall theme with open world games. That and boring, uninspired sidequest. (None of the sidequests in BotW could hold a candle to the complexity and emotional reward of the wedding quest from MM.)
@FromHerotoZeroYT
@FromHerotoZeroYT 6 күн бұрын
I can really do anything but agree, especially with the point about Majora's Mask, but the big caveat with these games is that you're not really supposed to collect them all! I hope I manage to properly convey this and a lot of other points that speak to the work done by the dev team by the end of the video, so feel free to report back with what you thought, negative or positive :)
@D-Nova
@D-Nova 6 күн бұрын
@@FromHerotoZeroYT Yeah, I guess, but we didn't have to collect every single star in SM64 or Galaxy, or every Shine in SMS either. I mean, okay, we were never supposed to collect everything but, still, there could have been a more elegant way of making sure that non-completionist gamers don't get locked out from seeing the ending. Better balancing the difficulty would be my approach. Making sure that every level has enough easy (but fun and creative) moons, alongside difficult and more cryptic ones. But that task obviously gets more difficult the more stars/moons/whatever your game has, which is why I think it was a stupid idea to raise the number that high in the first place. BUT THEN AGAIN, if they didn't do that, the worlds would feel empty, which is why quantity over quality seems to be a common "problem" with open world or big sandbox games.
@FromHerotoZeroYT
@FromHerotoZeroYT 6 күн бұрын
That's fair, but 64 and Sunshine were also smaller games and not really as deep in the open world genre as Odyssey is and the Galaxy games are more course clear than what the other ones were trying to be. Odyssey would definitely have had good of a better difficulty balance, but at the same time, this might not have fit into the vision of the devs. Pretty much all of the 3D Mario games has some "padding" and I think this was done mainly so that people could get to the end of the story (70 stars in 64 for example) without having to strictly follow a set path and being able to freely choose which stars to get. Odyssey kinda takes this to the extreme, which is not for everyone, but I think the reason and thought behind it is clear.

I really feel like so many reviewers and critics of the game like to think that everyone is going to want to 100% the game. While yeah, a decent amount of people do (particularly with Mario games), the majority of people just want to play the game. The best example of this is how negatively people seem to feel about the shop moons. There is no need for people who arent trying to 100% the game to buy all the moons. And if someone isn't trying to 100%, it allows them to skip some of the more frustrating moons and just buy them.
@FromHerotoZeroYT
@FromHerotoZeroYT 6 күн бұрын
I agree! Using Balloon World to make enough money in order to buy moons to get access to the Dark Side and Darker Side of the Moon is totally valid. And even then, you won't get the gold sail that signifies 100% completion until you actually complete all the objectives despite how many moons you have in total!

I’ve been feeling like the nerfed long jump, side flip and wall jump make for much less dynamic movement than the previous sandbox Mario’s. The hat bounce combo is too good, I have to really force myself to look for opportunities to use his other moves. The roll naturally gets used a lot as well ofc
@FromHerotoZeroYT
@FromHerotoZeroYT 6 күн бұрын
The wall jump definitely sucks. Nitro Rad brought up a good point in his Corn Kidz 64 and Pseudoregalia videos I think it was that a good wall jump is something that you can use for more than just jumping between two walls and the one in Odyssey definitely aren't used as well as those games. As for the long jump, I don't think it's that bad because of what I said in the vid, but I haven't heard anyone say something about the side flip being nerfed. I used it a lot, but that might just be because I'm used to it being the best height you can get while standing relatively in one place from the previous games

I just finished a playthrough of this game (well, I'm still working on the Perfect Run in Grandmaster Galaxy, but that's the only thing left) and I'm not entirely sure what to think. If you just beat the game, it's much better than Galaxy 1 in my opinion and is one of the best Mario games ever made. But getting 100% is an absolute nightmare. I actually agree with you about the hub world. I think the comet observatory looks cool, but from a functional standpoint it's incredibly annoying to switch between levels. When I was going for 100% in Galaxy 1, I got very annoyed toward the end when I was getting all of the prankster comets and had to constantly switch the area I was in. Galaxy 2's faceship is MUCH easier to navigate. Plus, not many people mention it, but I honestly love the different world themes. Like how World 1 is a generic sky, but World 2 is orange and filled with clouds, and later on, World 6 has a literal black hole. It's really cool to just look at the backgrounds as you stand on the faceship. Also definitely agree that the level design was better in Galaxy 2. Open areas don't work with Galaxy's controls, Galaxy 2 toned them down a ton. I think the developers were also more willing to deviate from just using a ton of small platforms and planets. Fluffybuff Galaxy, for instance, feels completely different than anything in Galaxy 1 because of how large most of it is (while still remaining linear and flat). There were definitely a few galaxies that I didn't enjoy (like the one where you just have to fight a ton of enemies over and over again), but the vast majority of main levels were fantastic. Although one thing I didn't like were the bosses. You praised them for the most part, but I definitely thought Galaxy 1 had better bosses overall. They felt much faster, like if you were skilled enough you could take them out very quickly, whereas a lot of Galaxy 2's bosses felt slow and tedious. So yeah, I think if you just get 70 stars and beat Bowser, Galaxy 2 is way better than Galaxy 1, but I honestly really hated getting 100%. It's not just the green stars for me. I already didn't like the Prankster comets in Galaxy 1, but in Galaxy 2 they may be worse. The purple coin levels are MUCH better, and speedrun levels are too, but I really despised the daredevil comets this time around, and I didn't really mind them that much in Galaxy 1. At least in that game, it was mostly just fighting against one boss, but in Galaxy 2 they often have you replaying entire levels which felt a lot more annoying. Plus, even when you have to fight a boss in Galaxy 2, I found it annoying because of Galaxy 2's slower bosses. The secret stars were much worse as well. I agree that it was cool that they made coins more valuable by having hungry lumas want coins instead of starbits, but I think the problem is that star bits are very fun and easy to collect compared to coins. To get starbits, all you have to do is point around the screen, so you can get a lot without even moving around. Coins, on the other hand, are much harder to come by and more tedious to collect. That alone made many of the secret stars feel annoying in Galaxy 2. But even then, the green stars are definitely the worst part of getting 100%. I think most of the Green Stars were well placed. They were either well hidden, or they required you to use Mario's movement in an interesting way. But having at least 2 in every single level was just WAY too far. It should have been one per level, then it would have been a cool bonus. I hated getting booted out of the level and going back over and over again. And it forced me to revisit every Galaxy, even ones that I didn't like. When I look back at Galaxy 2 now, it feels like the first 70 stars were so fun and filled with variety and creativity, but the green stars all kind of blend together. It was needless padding in a game that already had more content than it needed. Another thing I hated about them that you didn't mention is how annoying it can be to find them when the camera is so shit. I swear, half the time when you try to adjust the camera it just won't let you for no apparent reason. There were a few levels where I had to look up green star locations when I totally would have found them if I could have just looked around in first person mode. I think it's fine for Galaxy 2 to have a bad camera that isn't easily adjustable, since most of the time the angles they give you already work perfectly. But it didn't mesh well with the green stars, which require you to look around the level to find them. Although I have a lot of problems with Galaxy 2 though, it's still one of my favorite Mario games now, and I know I'll view it more positively in the future since I am definitely NOT going for 100% next time. What I've noticed from playing all of the 3D Marios is that it feels like the biggest problem with all of them is excessive and needless padding. Maybe that doesn't apply to 3D Land or 3D World, but it applies very strongly to 64, Sunshine, Galaxy, and ESPECIALLY Galaxy 2 and Odyssey. A final thing that I really appreciate about it is how it has tributes to previous 3D Mario games (like Throwback Galaxy or the one that was like a level in Sunshine) without feeling like it's just trying to pander to nostalgia. That also gives it a nice sense of finality. Like, if Galaxy 2 was the last 3D Mario game, I'd be okay with that. I love 3D Land and 3D World, but I can't say the same about those 2 games, they just don't have the same epicness as Galaxy 2. And I'm just not that big a fan of Odyssey. Anyway, great video, it's good to see someone recognizing all of the things this game did differently from Galaxy 1, I really don't agree with the criticism that it should have been DLC or was just a level pack or whatever.

Hey, you're back! Yeah, 100%ing Galaxy 2 is just... not very fun. The Observatory is cool, I like it, but there's just too much running back and forth. Especially with how Prankster Comets appear completely randomly across all the levels. You have a point about the bosses. Glamdozer immediately comes to mind. The problem with collecting star bits for Hungry Lumas that are in the levels is that there's not really any risk involved. You lose your coins when you die, so you need a good enough mastery of the game to clear the level without dying at least until the point at which the Luma is. Not only do I think it's a great use for the coins to prevent them from feeling useless, but also having to feed them star bits feels a bit pointless when you can just die over and over again to stock up. Thank you for watching and for the comment! I really enjoy reading these :)
@cogidubnus8368
@cogidubnus8368 10 күн бұрын
@@FromHerotoZeroYT I agree that the system they had with star bits was not great, but I think the solution would have been to just take away your star bits if you die. Or if that's too extreme, reset your star bit count to what it was at the last checkpoint. It's definitely stupid that you can just die over and over to get enough star bits, but I think star bits are much more fun to collect, so it would work better that way. I guess coins are kinda useless outside of health, but I don't really see a problem with that as long as they design the game around that. I remember a few times in Galaxy 1 where you were rewarded with a ton of coins for doing stuff instead of star bits, and yeah, that's completely pointless since the max number of coins you could ever want at a time is 2.

I don’t like how Amy is written in the game. I wish they lean more into the fact Amy was helping big and cream. Find their pets rather than making. It seem like she’s helping just as an excuse to find Sonic. The whole time there’s no way out of marrying me” thing has nothing to do with helping Froggy and Chocola and makes it seem like they misunderstood the point of when Amy said a similar thing in SA2. Yes Amy SAID she would only let sonic out of jail if he promised to marry her, but she was clearly just being a little flirtatious and didn’t actually mean it. Contrast with how she acts in this game, she literally tries to beat up Sonic for saying no. I feel like sonic heroes was the beginning of Amy’s mischaracterization that was still a very prevalent piece of her writing all the way up until sonic free writers and arguably sonic generations.

Barring the games that's come out recently since I haven't actually played most of them after Generations, Amy never felt well written at all. Skyrim did make everything casual even more so than Oblivion, but I think what Skyrim did better than Oblivion was introducing you to the world much better. The main quest at the very least, takes you all across the locations, and there are various things that can happen or places that you can go during that time. Oblivion on the other hand, it just doesn't feel well designed in terms of the cities, you only visit a couple cities here and there as you go through the game. You visit Kvatch, Anvil, the Imperial City, and like I don't even think you go to any other cities. Whereas Skyrim introduces you to many of them. Even though Skyrim has the marker and relies on it, you can still just naturally find things as you move throughout the city and such.

Great video. Although you clearly really love this game, I think it's good that you still talked about the few problems you had with it. Galaxy is often hailed as a "perfect game" by Mario fans, but I never felt it deserved that title, and everything about the game is fresh in my mind since I just 100% completed it for the second time. I do genuinely enjoy the game and I still think it's a great game, but I think it has a lot of issues that Galaxy 2 fixed. You said that 64 and Sunshine had a lot of padding, which is definitely true, but I think Galaxy is just as bad as those games, if not maybe even worse. The most obvious example is the prankster comets, which are almost all extremely lazy, especially the speed run ones where they just slapped a timer on it and called it a day. The only ones I thought were good were the cosmic races and SOME of the purple coin missions. Usually the timed purple coin missions were fun, but basically anything else was pure trash. Seriously, I was very surprised to see you only said you disliked one of them. The freezeflame one was literally making you reach both peaks of the mountain, basically making you play 2 shitty, tedious versions of previous stars. I also hated the desert one and the ship one. Galaxy's controls were just not made with exploration in mind because of how slow they are, and putting ONLY 100 coins made it so much more tedious than it could have been. And it's not just the prankster comets that were obvious padding, many of the secret stars were as well. I remember one of them where all you had to do was kill 20 goombas on a giant yoshi planet. And it was annoying in Battlerock where they basically make you play the entire first star again just to save Luigi. Overall, the game is filled with original stuff, but it was clearly a rushed game. Maybe not as rushed as 64 or Sunshine, but they clearly padded the shit out of the game to get it to 120 stars when it would have been better to just have 90 or so. Another thing I dislike are the controls. You said 64 felt sluggish but I don't really get how that was the case. And Sunshine is really fast, yeah, but if you want to go slow you can just not tilt all the way on the analog stick, so I don't have a problem with it. I guess it's true that making Mario go where you want him to go is pretty easy in Galaxy, but I don't think that's the only important thing when it comes to controls. In 64 and Sunshine, the controls were really fast, and the long jump and dive were both ways to build up momentum and speed through the games (although Sunshine doesn't have a long jump, it has stuff like the spin jump and watersliding which makes up for it). Galaxy is SO much slower because you lose all your speed after landing from a long jump. And removing the dive also made the game a lot slower. I think if you look at 64 and Sunshine speedrunning, then compare it to Galaxy speedrunning, it becomes clear how much worse it got. And my final big problem with Galaxy is the level design, and I think this is something that got MUCH better with Galaxy 2. The main problem with Galaxy's level design is that using small planets was an inherently bad idea. Using a planet instead of a flat surface means that you aren't gonna be able to see the entire area at once, only a small part of it. That meant they couldn't make the planets too big or it would be tedious to find things and you'd get lost, so they made basically every planet tiny. But having tiny planets means there's almost no room to have actual platforming, and the weird camera angles also make platforming awkward. And because of that, a lot of the times the planets are just used to make you kill a few enemies or collect launch star fragments or whatever. The awkward controls and worse vision made inevitable by using planets really killed a lot of the game's level design and made it extremely repetitive and uninteresting imo. Basically all of my favorite levels use flat surfaces much more than they use planets. But I just started a playthrough of Galaxy 2 recently, and god, it's SO MUCH better. I am shocked that the general consensus seems to be that Galaxy 1 was better. It's not close for me. The main improvement that Galaxy 2 makes is that it's much more likely to use large, expansive surfaces rather than tiny planets, and that allowed the designers to make actual engaging and interesting platforming challenges. It almost feels like they felt obligated to use the planets a lot in Galaxy 1 since that was the gimmick of the game, whereas with Galaxy 2 they gave themselves more freedom to do what worked rather than what looked cool on the surface. I'm only at world 3, but I already genuinely think that the average Galaxy 2 level is better than even the best Galaxy 1 levels.

Thank you! I sincerely love these kinds of comments! I don't think the prankster comets are all as lazy as you make them out to be. Some of them for sure, but even the speed run ones adds a few new obstacles here and there, which I'm pretty sure I showed off unless I'm mixing this game with Galaxy 2 again. It happens... far too often lol. I agree that the Freezeflame purple coin comet is kinda tedious, but I thought I mentioned that? I'm sorry, it's been a while. I think a lot of the prankster comets change enough as to warrant them being there. The good ones are definitely not bad enough to be called straight padding imo, but it's clear that they "had" to up the star count to 120 for "reasons". I don't think Galaxy was rushed nor does it feel like that, far fom it, and neither did 64. Sunshine however... When I said that 64 felt sluggish, I meant when you start running from a standstill. It's really the only thing I don't like about the controls in that game, the rest is perfection. It's the same with Sunshine. When starting to run from a standstill, Mario goes way too fast! I talk a lot about Mario's movement, like the long jump issue and momentum build up, and the change in level design that mostly eliminates all the "boring" sections from Galaxy 1 in my Galaxy 2 video so it's kinda funny seeing you mentioning almost those same talking points here haha. For what it's worth, I think the use of small planets worked in Galaxy 1's favor since it allowed them to really highlight the gravity dynamic, but I'm also glad they decided to tone it down a bit in Galaxy 2!

@@FromHerotoZeroYT The speedrun ones only change in Galaxy 2 as far as I know. I was playing the yoshi dash pepper one and they added meteors, but nothing like that was in Galaxy 1, they basically just slapped a timer on it. Another thing Galaxy 2 does is start you with a tiny amount of time and you have to accumulate more as you go, which definitely makes it feel much more engaging and interesting. Overall, some of the Prankster comets are definitely very different, don't get me wrong. I loved the cosmic clone races and most of the timed purple coin levels, but basically everything else was very obvious padding and just boring. Some of the purple coin missions in particular were absolutely horrific. I guess I should clarify what I meant when I called Galaxy rushed. I think it's rushed because at least 20 of the missions (most of which are Prankster comets, but some secret stars too) are obvious padding. There's no way some of those things would have been in the game if they had a few more months of development time. In terms of polish, Galaxy is extremely polished, and I very rarely encounter glitches, but the padding shows that there was a point where the developers ran out of time and had to reuse a lot of content. Flying Mario also makes this clear to me, it would have been so awesome if there was a boss you fought as Flying Mario (I'm shocked they didn't bring it back in Galaxy 2). Anyway, I appreciate the response, and once I finish Galaxy 2, I'll check out your video on it, since I'm interested to see what you said. Personally, I'm still really enjoying it and think it improved on basically everything from Galaxy 1 other than the story (which isn't a big deal for me, but I understand some of the disappointment). As for the small planets in Galaxy 1, I think they were impressive and cool, I just think they were bad from a gameplay standpoint. The controls get much weirder, and you can't see as much. It's really fun to long jump between small planets and have the gravity go all crazy, but for me that wasn't enough to make up for it. I think they shoehorned it into Galaxy 1 a lot because of how cool and impressive it was, whereas by Galaxy 2 it wasn't impressive anymore so they felt like they had the freedom to tone it down.

I’m only a few minutes in and, as someone who’s favorite game of all time is Galaxy 2 DAMN you have some hot takes. I think the two hub worlds both have strengths, I think the point of the observatory is to be kind of sad, and I think it works well. By the end of the game it is much happier, with the music being much happier and the whole thing being beautifully lit. I also strongly disagree about the movement I think the movement is so smooth and is so fun to use, although that one might just be me. That’s doesn’t mean I didnt love the video tho, great work!

Oh, I think the atmosphere of the Observatory works really well, I just really don't like to traverse it! Also the movement in general while doing platforming is great and smooth. What I don't like is the long jump and the extended periods where you're only running around on a flat plane and not doing any platforming! And thank you! I appreciate it :)

That discussion about reusing game design is most definitely a problem, gameplay is cool but galaxy 2 lost the essence, music, and the feel of the adventure. All galaxy 2 is is a quick cash grab just throwing in yoshi and a couple levels and completely disregarding a story so much to the point it’s literally the first game with less of everything but yoshi and more levels and that hub world of Mario after being at the observatory is probably the most disappointing thing out of it all, like your content tho

I disagree. The level design and gameplay refinement far outweighs a couple of asset reuses. It's not just the design being reused, it's being used better and more effectively which can be said about literally any game, it's just that you recognize the looks of the different elements here. Also what story? I never understood what people liked about the barren hub that is the Observatory, there's nothing to do there and is just a huge waste of space really. I think calling Galaxy 2 a quick cash grab is super disingenuous when you look at how much work went into refining the level design over the first game, but hey that's just my opinion 🤷 (also thank you :))

I mean, collecting mushrooms isn’t so bad. I assume you’re talking about the Mages Guild quest. All four mushrooms are found in Seyda Neen. In-fact, I habitually collect the four mushroom types when I start a new player in anticipation of completing the quest once I get to Balmora.

It's not the worst for sure. I've started looking at it more as a way to humble the character and make you feel like you're at the very bottom of the ladder in terms of rank lately though. Also your method only works when you know what's coming, but it's a good one
