Somehow I have really fond memories of Rayman Revolution, but is that just nostalgia talking? Today we take a look at the least talked about version of the most talked about Rayman game!

Yes, the section with a million pirates to kill is... really bad but I would argue it does one little thing well. It makes the pirate threat more believable. If they have these kind of numbers on their side, it's no wonder they've conquered the planet.

|27:55| I’m pretty sure someone has told you this already at some point, but yes: that _is_ the same mosquito from the first game! Also, I absolutely loved that little anecdote about your very own stone circle. It was such a sweet memory to listen to, and I was positively captivated by the lore of your former abode.

@@FromHerotoZeroYT It is the same guy. In one of the levels, a teensie says that only Bzzit can take you there. Bzzit is the name of the mosquito that you befriended. 34:33 I always assumed he was poisoned by the pirates or something. EDIT: I saw the manual for the Dreamcast version while looking for a cdi that I could burn, and I noticed that in the character description for clark, it says something like "his main weakness is his stomach, which can be unsettled by pirate parts a little too rusty", so you were right! I also played the first bit of the DC version and there is also the "secrets of the world", where you get to see more information about the world the more lums you get. Is that in other versions? Also the king of the teensies, or maybe an impostor, no one knows, in the first level, mentions the isle of doors when he first introduces it like he should, but then in the immediate next line is still talking about "the hall".

I didn't watch this video until years later but it was nice hearing your childhood stories and I keep forgetting nowadays that region locking is a thing. Heck, in the old days some games were easier or harder depending on if you were NSTC or PAL due to the frame rate difference. It was fun hearing you read the prologue to the game, the manual really got me into reading back then! And most content creators making retrospectives forget the manual's contents. I'm surprised with all the differences that Revolution has! Edit: That house and the view is amazing, I can't imagine growing up there that looks really amazing. I'm used to parking lots, giant buildings, smog, traffic jams and people fighting in front of my house.

I just started playing this version yesterday, after playing the N64 version a ton of times as a kid. I immediately thought my emulation was bugged out when I got to the tutorial level and couldn't shoot, despite the hint stone on the ground telling you "hit square to shoot" lmao. Definitely a bizarre change to even introduce swinging your fists as a mechanic, when you'll never use that again once you get the ability to shoot. Also very strange to make your shot speed abysmal just to put a pseudo progression system in the form of the upgrade shop. The updated visuals are phenomenal though, I love the new areas that were added and I'd say that overall makes it worth a playthrough, at least

@FromHerotoZeroYT
@FromHerotoZeroYT 2 жыл бұрын
It kinda works in the other versions since the invincibility frames aren't too long and the enemies doesn't have too much health so they have a chance to attack you in between getting damaged. This makes it so each fight cycles between two phases, one where you damage the enemy and one where you focus on dodging. Well, it's not quiiite like that but you get the gist. Here though the later enemies in particular have way too much health and way too many i-frames so it ends up feeling kinda weird.

There was a transitional period where some consoles went over to disc based media and others were more powerful and things like that, so they kinda had to make some changes to either fit the games on the storage medium or have the machine be able to play it. The bad thing about this particular version of Rayman 2 is that it doesn't run at 60 fps like the pc and dreamcast version which btw, I used to own as a kid. Dreamcast is the best version imo. When I bought this on ps2, I was kinda disappointed that the game only ran at 30 fps despite the ps2 being the superior hardware, but that didn't deter me from having fun playing this. Never played the original n64 version because I never owned an n64. I had a ps1(Never played that version of Rayman 2, also) and a windows 98 pc growing up and my first copy of rayman 2 was the pc version, then eventually, the Dreamcast version when I got a Sega Dreamcast, then in 2001 when I got a ps2, I bought this along with Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3. I played Rayman Revolition in German - since that's my main language bruh - but I think the German Voice acting is one of the best for the game imo. It was also better mixed up and I never had sound issues - and let me tell you I played the game over 20 times for sure. I was never really bothered by the additional combat. I liked it but I also am generally very appealed by combat in games which is why I also enjoyed all bosses. I also think Umber was a nice twist because it gives off a feeling of that he's a 'friendly' boss wanting us to progress and free the world from the pirates also emphasized by the different look like he actually is the guardian of that sanctuary since hundrets of years and the feeling of the robots trying to infiltrate that sanctuary but not progressing as much as with the others. (I hope I make sense here) I also very much enjoy the backtracking. Maybe I am influenced by my love for all Resident Evil Games on this aspect but I just enjoy going back to areas of a game where I was before, clearing everything and just revising my adventure through the playthrough so far. I never really could relate to the critique Rayman Revolution recieved because I always felt like it's better than the original. But I in general like combat heavy games with mixed paces, (optional) bonus features and backtracking. If you don't enjoy that then obviously you won't like Revolution that much. But one aspect we probably all agree on is that the soundtrack is absolutely fantastic! All in all this is a geat review with a lot of effort! ♡ I really enjoyed your inside on the game, even though I myself also think that it's definitely one if not the top Rayman game available

Honestly I feel like I'm the only one who vastly prefers the PS1 voice acting compared to Revolution. It's not great, sure, but it has charm to it. Revolution's voice acting, on the other hand, is bloody atrocious, the few characters who had good voices before now have bad ones, and the bad voices now have abysmal ones. Coupled with the fact that, for some reason, everyone sounds like they recorded their dialogue at the bottom of a well (why the hell is it so echoey?), it's just not good to listen to. It's not even so bad it's good, it's just bad.

Before watcing the video as it seems to be longish: My introduction to R2 and rayman in general was Revolution. I had heard about these Rayman games and only had a PS2 and bought RR when I saw it once. I played it a bit but didn't really like it and got lost in the overworld and in the levels in general. I also found the cover art a bit creepy. I later bought Rayman 1 for PS1 when I found it once to see how it compared and I think I enjoyed it a little but overall found it too hard. It's (R2) one of the many games responsible for my longstanding belief that PS2 graphics are barely better than N64 as aside from Rayman's models it looks similar in detail to a lot of N64 games. The rest were mostly shovelware I think. A lot of these games including R2 I disliked for the dragged out boring combat and what I thought to be restrictive boundaries. But I only played like the first elvel or something intitially, then more recently maybe in 2017 or soemthing I played through to the end of the cave of bad dreams I think. And just in December I played through all the levels but haven't completed 100%. I noticed on the most recent playing the visible polygon seams and a sound glitch that I don't think is my console where some sound effects like the helicopter one playing on loop permanently and the game crashing when you pause. Other games don't do that on this PS2 though my Saturn does it on all games sometimes I believe because of dry joints. I still didn't like it when I played recently, but I forced myself to keep on playing more deeply and eventually I began to like it. I think I always liked the personality of the game but it was always the gameplay i didn't like which is bad because it is a game. I think the things I didn't like were that I got confused by the hub worlds and was never sure what was a level and what wasn't which I think is the fault of specifically the PS2 version. Another problem is puzzels I could never get my head around. Like the stupid bit at the end of the bayou, or at the end of the first part of it at least I think, with the bridge, where you have to hit a switch to get it to extend towards you; I could never figure that bit out because I never saw the switch on PS2, but eventually I got it to work by accident and didn't know how, but when I played the PS1 version jsut the other day, it seemed obvious. Also, this one I think is probably shared by all other versions too other than the PS1 version: almost every time I tried to pick the path that led to a dead end to explore, rather than on with the level, I picked the less obvious one which always turned out to be on with the level. When I realised it went to the rest of the level it either doesn't let you go back or It does in which case I spend time backtracking. I actually enjoyed the PS1 version more, and that was in an emulator with a tiny digital bluetooth SNES style pad. I haven't played any others yet. I have the PC version but whatever version of windows 10 I have is determined not to let me play it. Tl,dr: I never used to understand why people like R2 so much, until I realised: they didn't play Revolution.
@FromHerotoZeroYT

I think your criticisms are pretty on point. I also played Revolution first... Actually that's a small lie, I played a bit of the N64 version first, but Revolution was the first version of Rayman 2 that I completed. Honestly, if you haven't played the other versions and want to go back to it, try the N64 or Dreamcast one, they're much tighter than this horrible PS2 port lol and doesn't have cut content like the PS1 version!

I see a lot of people knock Revolution for things they claim are changes, but then I realize they're comparing to the PS1 or Dreamcast versions. I played the PC version of Great Escape originally, and some things that I've heard people criticize were definitely already in it (i.e. the rogue pirate earlier on in the Fairy Glade). I dunno, either way, I don't think Revolution is bad by any stretch. It adds a hub world but keeps portals for ease. The stripping away of abilities and putting them in a shop feels a little bullshit if you've played a different version, but adding more of a progression does make sense. And I'd say overall their changes to make things flow more smoothly improved the game. My only gripe is the addition of English voices instead of Raymanish...and making them the default. Those things are atrocious.

I think this video could have done a better job at explaining just exactly WHY Rayman Revolution is the lesser version. This video has bright spots but it didn’t remain focused. For example I don’t think you needed to spend the opening 5 minutes talking about region-locks and your brother. I just played Rayman Revolution for the first time. I emulated it with a widescreen patch, an HD texture pack, and a 60fps mod. It was very pretty but it still felt wrong. The music felt weird at certain parts and obviously the quiet voices was weird. I do agree the hub world was unnecessary and confusing

I will say this I prefer revolution cause of: 1atmosphere 2more bosses(and they are good one like grolem 13 or this tank) 3Hubworld You can explore the world(and not just select a level 4minigames(well some of them) 5purchasing your powers This was a nice addition cause you would have to think which power is useful Also it made collecting lums actually important Also I like that we got a rain mask(the mask you get after rescuing globox babies) It is a shame that you dont use it more often in the game So yea revolution wins Even if there are problems with it(like lagging and the pirate ambush)

I like the idea of a power up shop, or at least a way to spend lums, but they take away too much of Rayman's core moveset and place it in the Magic Well for you to buy, like rapid fire and walking fast while carrying stuff. There's more backtracking too in order to collect all the yellow lums

@SHMidlerPlays 6 ай бұрын
@@FromHerotoZeroYT I personally like the hub worlds, but they definitely can be improved but again that game is from the end of the N64, PS1, original Xbox, and Dreamcast era so the hub world not being overly populated and such makes sense. Also there are lums to find in the hubs. And also backtracking was commons in games from this era, can’t do anything about it now as it kinda already got improved in games that came out afterwards. Also I like the magic well, it makes it much more rewarding in terms of his move set to me.

It is kinda sad how this version turned out. As you said the overworld is cool, the biditank is a great boss and some other additions are good but they went overboarded with the new combat encounters, the framerate is awful and it has some other annoying things here and there, especially the chair rollercoaster being turned into an optional hard as fuck minigame to increase your health, it was so dumb. This should have been the definitive version of Rayman 2 but as it is is just a pseudo-remake that sometimes adds some great shit and others just shit.

4:25 nothing in Rayman makes sense. I think they are just robots just because. I think I have read the story from the manual but quite a while ago. I definitely recognise the pictures from it and bits of the story. Ah yes, that's another thing with Rayman Revolution: the default volume settings are trash, and its ahrd to get them right too. Either you can't hear the music well in game or you can't hear the dialogue or sound effects properly which makes it hard to feel "immersed" in the game. I used to find it a bit disturbing but it went away after a while. Also I don't like the lighting on PS2. Also I was always playing on composite so most things wouldn't look good. I also haven't really played any of the mini games because I didn't get through the rollercoaster one. Also I hate Murphy and his interrupting. That always annoyed me. He is not as bad as in R3 though. Yeah, the "pest invaders" bit is awful game design and there are quite a few bits like this on PS2 that I somtimes though were glitches. Like I thought I entered the Bayou before I was allowed somehow because I couldn't finish it but I couldn't get out either without re loading the game. Actually, it wasn't the Bayou was it, just the level that has that bit in it that was put into the Bayou in the PS1 version?

There are so many additions to this game that fundamentally break the core of the original. Along with the over emphasized combat, the shoed in progression system is easily the worst imo. Also sometimes the geometry of the world is just... jank. It was a little jank in the original, but you'll get randomly caught on seams and small bumps all the time.

People often said Rayman 2 is better than 3 and I never understood it. Turns out I grew up with Revolution which padded the game out with so much pointless crap. You grew up in a beautiful place btw.

Haha, well I don't think even the base version of 2 is better than 3 tbh. And thank you! It really is pretty!

Some deranged Rayman 2 fan is definitely going to hunt you down for this lmao No but liking the Ps1 version is fine, a lot of people like Revolution after all

The 2nd phase of the final boss was much better in the other versions.
