I mean this amazing fight requires deep insight of the so many obscure mechanics of the game, such as the weapons that few people use, the martial arts etc. But my point was that this requires good strategizing, unlike the majority of FFXV which was holding O and attacking until things died.

The weapon needs to have Savage Swipe or Clearout in its perk slot and then the regular charge attack gets replaced by that.

You aren't doing anything wrong, but there's two misunderstandings that have happened here. 1. The exact wording on the airstep tooltip is "Use L + O to take a step in midair after attacking..." which I realize can be read in multiple ways, but what the tooltip is trying to say is that in order to use airstep, you need to press L + O *while already in midair*. Airstep is not supposed to, and indeed cannot be performed from the ground. You need to be already in the air for it to work. (the "in" preposition in the explanation does make it very vague) 2. The thing you are able to do with a spear and a shortsword on the ground is not an airstep. I know, it looks like an airstep, it has the same visual effect as an airstep, it even has the same sound effect as an airstep, and indeed it does launch you into the air like an airstep would. However these are just parts of the basic moveset of these weapons, they don't take MP like an airstep and most importantly, *they don't even require that you have the Airstep ascension node*. And of course they are performed on the ground, while actual airsteps can only be done in midair. Some weapons that cannot even airstep at all have these kinds of airstep-esque ground jumps in their moveset, such as daggers ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJ-5ZJeDqNOWpqMsi=k65jYpgeCkN-Qh3Q&t=210 ) and even certain Royal Arms ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZaYf4WdoLlmos0si=eum0EaIJboAl-W5F&t=106 ) I don't blame you for misunderstanding these, since this game really does not explain its mechanics at all, and on the rare occasion that it does, the explanations are half-truths or flat-out incorrect. So, if I'm understanding correctly, airstep requires you to be airborne already, which you can do by varying combos like the one you are doing with spears. Airstep only allows you to move in any direction with a sword or polearm if you are already in the air, otherwise you you just do a variation of a combo. Got that right?

Yeah true, and with chocobos too. Both of them have preset link strike animations so any weapons can trigger them. Wasn't aware of that 6 years ago ^_^'
