You did a good program. The country is built on random houses and dead reckoning. Western platform construction changed all that. But who doesn't want to live in an old house with wood heat?
@stoveadvice
@stoveadvice Күн бұрын
Sure, it's extremely high, but it would have worked just fine if everything "up top" that we can't see is what a Rumford should be. The chimney through the house, not on an outside wall, would have heated up quickly for maximum draft and the "flat back" Rumford design would have pulled it right up with no smoke in the room. The standard U.S. fireplace with "angle in back toward the room" to create a giant smoke shelf, is a horrible design, no matter what "code" says. U.S. chimneys are far too wide and allow cold air to come down, thus the smoke shelf tries to "fix" this poor design. A small, insulated, warm chimney doesn't ever need a smoke shelf because no air can come down. Wide chimneys don't move air quickly like skinny ones. But, we must do what the idiotic "code" of our towns and cities, requires.

Hi good video thank you I née some help . Are you using an air space behind fire brick ? And have you considered using a second lintel to keep any weight off the damper (maybe the insulation is enough in that regard )
@chadvaillancourt
@chadvaillancourt 3 күн бұрын
Not using an airspace in this particular case. It was built to the exact standard as it is written in the code book. There isn't any weight on the damper, so there is no need for a second lintel.

Hey Chad, have you ever seen a masonry fireplace built on the second floor of a home? Could you build a solid masonry foundation from the ground level up to the second floor and start your firebox at that level? (providing local codes permits it)
@chadvaillancourt

Of course. Many houses have multiple fireplaces on different floor levels. Any configuration is possible.

Although sir I do have a question, I havent used my fireplace in twenty eight years and don't plan on using it. My question is should I still invest in a chimney liner. I do (of course have the mechanical flue), so would I need a liner for that? I've lived in my house 30 years and used the fireplace two years, 1994 to 1996 (off and on) then stopped. My chimney doesn't have a liner

Lastly, I don't have caps on my flues, would you recommend that I cover them? There are no trees, but I have had (as of lately) had some wetness from the flue pipe in the wall and dirt/mud in the clean out door (mechanical side), not the ash door/side. Again, thank you so much for your advice.

Thank you! I like how they do the soakers. However, I'm not a fan of how they do the counterflashing in one piece with those ugly angled cuts. It seems like a really cheap way to do it, in my opinion.

Hi Chad! Another great video! I'm a big fan and fellow mason of 30 years. I don't have much experience with the lime mortars,.. can you acid wash the product in the end? What is the board life of the old like mortars your utilizing? Do you think it will easily out last most of the conventional type N light mortars? Nonetheless thanks for all the content. Really enjoy watching a fellow mason doing his craft.
@chadvaillancourt
@chadvaillancourt 13 күн бұрын
Yes, I have acid washed, but it doesn't work as well with lime mortar. I've tried vinegar, too. I'm still trying to figure out the best method. Board life is great! If you're in the shade, you could leave it overnight without even covering it. I usually just put it back in a bucket with the lid on. It will easily outlast conventional mortars. We have thousands of years of proof. Portland mortars that haven't had a good showing for the last hundred years that they've been utilized. Obviously, building practices are a contributing factor to premature failure as well.
