So, I was a my first Bass show (idk what they're called). A guy had a box that he said was switchable from 4 and 6th order box with PVC pipe and some ball valves. The ball valves let him switch between them. How does one design something like that?

Higher order boxes are challenging to design. There is some software to help with the work, like WinISD or Hornresp, but often a lot of decisions are made from previous experience

At the time of purchase in my opinion, GZ drivers had the best price/performance from sortiment I had available. They have some issues, like weak motor and a bit optimistic power rating but if you keep this in mind when listening to your subwoofer, GZ should last a long time

PLEASE TELL ME: what is the difference when we have both ports in the same part of subs and when the ports are oposite? L-Acoustic made Sb18M with both ports in the same part but other brands (like KV2, Makie, Norton, etc) made subs with ports in oposite, like yours. Why?
@carlosbarrera10

@KarlisZalitis

I'm not sure, but I guess from acoustics standpoint for subwoofer frequency range it should not have any noticeable difference if the ports are separated or next to each other. But I could be mistaken. My gut feeling says that they should be separated, but it's only that, a feeling :D Other reason why my ports are on opposite sides is that I wanted to avoid 90degree turns in ports. This is an interesting topic to be honest
@djs1279

@@KarlisZalitis yes! I made a lots of tests and I feel the best frequency coupling when the both ports are in the same part and no distance between them. L acoustics made something a little more intersting whem they put both ports in a little common space(like 5-7 cm coupling port) . So, in the SB18M the both ports don t go outside directly. They are opnened in a PRE OUT port that sum both .

Hey! I guess one of the main benefitsis driver control in passband region - from what I've read, the less cone moves the less distortion. Also this helps to protect the driver from mechanical damage. Better loading allows for bigger boxes thus more effective output. But all of this has to be balanced with port size to avoid ringing or Air turbulence. And yes, usually bandpass boxes are bigger. In short - it depends :D

I would try hanging panels from all sides, via mildly tensioned Bungee cords.. That would be similar to a typical speakers "Centering Spider". I would think that you would want the panel to be able to vibrate / move fairly freely.. rather than being braced too tightly. That said.. you want to make sure that the movement would be accurate, rather than being able to move in random chaotic angles. The challenge might be, in be in making each bungee, at relatively similar tension levels. Maybe even having tension adjusters (like a guitar). Interestingly enough... Guitar strings might be a good suspension option. The use of separate panels for Highs and Lows, might help to greatly reduce merging distortions. Use a crossover, and direct to each.. and see what happens. Ohh, and the speaker wires themselves.. should be suspended, so that they do not add additional downwards weight, on the panels. The type of material used for the panels... might help in Optimization, for the High and Low panels. Meaning.. a different material might make the highs sound better... and a different material might make the bass sound better. Possible use of Zig-Zag material.. might help trap and move more air, on the Woofer panels... which might boost performance? All of this said.. Im not really sold on this tech... as interesting as it may be.

John, The magic of a DML panel lies within the ''chaotic'' behavior - eliminating coherent and ''in-phase'' source of energy with more natural resonant exciter. More in common with a real-life musical instrument, rather than mathematically exact driver. Many have tried, so few succeeded. As for my experience, I have not achieved good results with this design, but in the midst of all experiments I have heard some uncanny real life experiences that keep me pinned to this design - a feeling of a great potential if done correctly. This is a completely different beast when comparing with ordinary pistonic - type speakers, another set of variables. From exciter placement, to damping, to panel material itself. And also the performance of the exciters themselves - how they couple with exciting surface. I am still in research phase, working hard to achieve the ''real-life'' ''position-independent'' ''airy'' sound that I have glimpsed in some of my tests.. It sound pretentious but it's something you have to hear to understand

I heard a Di-Pole Ribbon Tweeter, that fired in 360 degrees. It had that same Airness.. BUT... it caused all sorts of odd Distortions, because the highs were bouncing from every direction, and getting back to your ears at different time-frames. Sort of like an Echo effect... and ultimately.. it ruined the music. In my Opinion, rather than use a full cone... Use a Half Cone shape... so that the sound only emanates 180 degrees. That will limit the distortion of the image, drastically. Other than that... I always recommend using Sealed woofer boxers with higher powered drivers. OR... next best option, is using a sealed box, with a passive radiator. Both of those options will produce bass that does not sound "Artificial" and "Boomy"... which happens from Ported designs. But as said.. if you make a sealed box (non Passives), you need drivers with stronger magnets, and stronger coils... to be able to deal with the higher Air-Pressure levels. Otherwise, there will be no benefit.. and might even sound worse. (With the proper Passive setup, you dont really have to worry about that as much). The added benefit, is that a stronger speaker driver... will be Far more Accurate, and far less likely to Distort... even at its max potentials. Eco drivers are too weak... and so they often cant accelerate (and stop) fast enough to keep up with the musical demands (which causes the muddying distortions). Ohh, and since the speakers are near the wall... might as well have the Woofers Forwards-Facing... rather than pointing upwards, which likely will distort the highs. I theorize that it would be best to use a more Dense + Heavy material, for the half-cones, rather than plastic. I do wonder how a Curved shaped cone might change the Image projection.
@KarlisZalitis
@KarlisZalitis Жыл бұрын
Thank you for detailed opinion! I agree, sealed woofers would definitely sound better. And yes, I agree that more dense cones probably would perform better, but the ones I have now also do quite well, at least to my ear. I still have plans to make upgraded version of this set using concrete cones and proper coaxial driver Regarding the curved cone - I did some tests with curved cones and the result was disappointing, as seen in the video. After some ray tracing modelling and real life tests, straight cones seem to deliver best and even dispersion without lensing effects and unwanted distortion Now at my listening position, the ''rear'' of the speakers fire in the curtains of my workshop, canceling most of the reflections. Although 180 degree design probably would be the best for my use, the 360 design let's me place the speakers as omni if I chose so, leaving the option open

I tried bigger and thicker panels, but the ringing was more noticable. Width/height is golden ratio, over-all size was half of the bigger panels I tried off camera. I'm still looking for right material, birch plywood might not be the best. Guys from forms tell that poplar plywood is much better than birch but haven't sourced it yet. Also found out that thinner panels sound better (less ringing) than thicker ones, that is why I machined it thinner

Look into getting a single, much more powerful 15" or even 12" sub, and then build an 8th-order bandpass for it. Even more bandwidth and musicality, plus with the meaner sub, it'll get even louder. Also, look into Hornresp for different modeling software. I've heard it does better when it comes to bandpass enclosures.

I've just gotten my first decent speakers recently. I couldn't afford a good full surround sound set yet, but the salesman talked me into buying a pair of speakers with an integrated amplifier to hold me over until I could. (Hearing the demo unit in the store in-action was what really sold me, though.) The sound quality is so delightful that I don't want to play any games with great soundtracks in the middle of the night when I can't use these speakers for fear of disturbing my neighbors, and it sounds much better having actual distance from the speakers than even with my open-back headphones. (GRADO SR60X.) However, the audio balance doesn't sound right unless I put my head in a very specific spot. I don't know whether it's the speakers that are the problem, or my placement of them, or that I need to get more (for surround sound,) or the fact that I have them mounted on cardboard boxes instead of stands... At the risk of having my purchasing decision judged, I'll tell you the model: YU4 from Kanto.

The listening experience more often than not, is a very subjective feeling - I know some guys that do professional PA system speakers, that insist on the perfect listening position for their system. Others tell you that you need to DSP the hell out of your speakers before it can be enjoyed at all. And again some are true ''audiophiles'' that just chant ''absolute truths'' they have read in forums, without trying to investigate the physics behind the words. And, yes, there are also newbies (like me, maybe) that try to hide inefficiencies of their speaker sets with phrases, that listening experience is very subjective :D The truth lies somewhere in between. I feel like omni is the right direction, and that classical stereo bookshelf speakers are not meant for everyone. Maybe the discomfort you are feeling is for this reason. Maybe it could be cured with some DSP or some acoustic treating for the listening area. Currently I am experimenting with some DML speaker designs and have some ideas for better omni speakers. But for sure, I will never build a classical stereo bookshelf speaker set ever again :D
