FGCI in Fort Lauderdale or a local marine products supplier. UPS won’t ship 4x8 so it’ll have to be local supplier or shipped via freight.

As always, good info Russ. This looks like a smoother surface than using peel ply.
@boatcrafterscollective

Yes it more smooth but the main reason I used this here is because I needed these lids to have a precise thickness so I was able to compress the glass layers so it didn’t get too thick.

@@boatcrafterscollective yep, because I am responsible for my work. To get the air bubbles out of the resin try to bend the pvc slightly when applying, don't lay it flat. I have arrived to a stage when I apply gelcoat, then resin, then foam core, then press it and obtain bubble free finish..

It’s 35lb density. It doesn’t bend.

@@boatcrafterscollective may be we have different type of pvc sheets here.. Even 70lb density pvc foam (like airex), which is structural, bends. Don't need much, event 1% of bend is sufficient to chase the air out. I also lay both sides at once, using another laminated waxed mdf board on the top side, time savings are huge..

70lb that’s like concrete. I don’t think I’ve ever come across foam over 50-60lb. I’m sure it exists. ?? I’m assuming you mean 70gram.

Nive vidéo ! How did you seal the edges ?
@boatcrafterscollective
@boatcrafterscollective Ай бұрын
I didn't do anything to the edges except coat with resin and then shoot a few layers of epoxy primer. The marine grade XPVC is very dense so with just primer was enough to fill any imperfections on the edge.

Love PVC board amazing product Resin bonds well with it once you rough up the surface with 80 grit no rot no oils in wood to delaminate easy to cut and you can glue multiply layers and joints together with normal pvc glue for plumbing, if people found out how versatile this product is they wont use wood ever again in a boat or Cusa just because its too expensive
@boatcrafterscollective
@boatcrafterscollective Ай бұрын
Personally I wouldn’t use the Home Depot PVC aside from the trim pieces for making accent pieces but you can use it if it’s heat treated and sanded. The marine grade / sanded PVC I use has much better properties suited for lamination and marine environment. But yes it can be substituted for Cossa for a lot of projects at a much lower cost.

I have to build up deck thickness to 3/8” after removing the original worn out teak. I was going to use 1/4”core cell and two layers of 1708 until I saw this video. Would you recommend pvc to build up deck thickness as I’m intending and what would be the layup schedule? Thank You for the Great videos btw!
@boatcrafterscollective

I wouldn’t use pvc for that. Probably best to use about at least a 6lb density foam with several layers of glass. 2-3 1708 should be plenty.

@ I was gonna with the 6 pound core cell knock off that they have available at fiberglass coatings for super cheap but unfortunately they only have it in half and three-quarter inch so being in the virgin island I’m stuck with Core cell, balsa., Home Depot PVC, ply or all glass layup. Luckily we have Gold Coast yachts here so with enough dumpster diving I could probably puzzle piece it together over time😂. /S

Great video! I've seen creators do huge projects... and they don't go into details or share how they are doing the little things. I come away not learning anything from them. I took away a bunch just from this small part and your insights. For some reason I never connected fin rollers being made that way in order to chase bubbles out, but also to leave the right amount of resin so it doesn't get too dry and delaminate.

Yes, it saves time. However....adding silica to the resin *before* adding hardener will reduce the strength. Some of the resin that gets absorbed by the silica will not get the proper amount of hardener no matter how long or how well you mix it. As noted by Tony, it is better to chill the ingredients to buy some time rather than premix the filler into the resin.
@boatcrafterscollective
@boatcrafterscollective 3 ай бұрын
Huh ??? Think about your statement. If resin doesn’t get enough hardener then the resin won’t cure properly. Improper catalyst percentage has no relation to strength. If something is catalyzed at 1% or 3% the strength is the same only the cure time is longer. If your statement was true then polyester based putties that you can buy off the shelf premixed wouldn’t exist. When you buy polyester fairing putty (ie bondo, radius putty, Evercoat, core bonding putty) they don’t give you silica and resin and tell you to mix it yourself, it already comes premixed/thickened in the can.
@solarguy6043
@solarguy6043 3 ай бұрын
@@boatcrafterscollective Understood. The premixes have accounted for the problem. But if doing it yourself, _WE_ have to account for the problem. It can be accounted for and it's not necessarily a deal breaker, but the effect is real. But don't trust me, I'm just some random dude on the internet. Research it yourself. I'll get you started, here's one from West epoxy: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fXq3pal3pZdjpsk saltboatworks knows a thing or two about this resin and epoxy: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j16vpKFqj72nl6s The nice folks at fiberglass supply: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZPGZ3R3gZamha8 etc etc etc

Good information! During a deep cleaning, the slow jet emulsion tubes on my carburetors were also found to be cracked at the bottom. This is unfortunately an expensive part but necessary and so replaced.. Personally, I use a 1/4 inch ratchet wrench with a good fitting flathead bit for the jets. No hassle with slipping resulting in damaged jets.

Well, I have a comment. Those bowl screws are not Philips. They are JIS (common on Japanese small engines), which is close in design, but far enough off that they will strip easily with a Phillips. A small set of vice grips grabbing the sides of the screw is best for breaking these free. These carbs have lots of room to allow for this. A Philips can then be used to finish removing/installing them. I'm not sure you were very accurate with the naming of the parts, but your disassembly did help me when I did mine. Thanks!
