Other than the music you can see the characteristics that made her a star.. impish, playful.. extraordinarily expressive.

I always loved her with long hair, it was a pity she cut her hair short to suit the later 1920s fashion. Beautiful restored film, hard to believe this movie is 112 years old!

Did you notice that she was driving an electric car? Unlike gasoline-powered cars, electric cars were not started by cranking - you just flipped a switch, which is why many women used electric cars.

Looks like D.W. Griffith didn't have much sympathy for high church Episcopal priests, as this one is a bit of a nut. But the wayward clergyman is saved by his church choir singer, and her soul is saved from the louche Broadway crowd and skirt chasers.

I hate to disagree with the "official" channel but isn't Owen Moore the farmhand she romances at the close of the short film? Or is he the one in the dark hat the sister meets just before the end? Def not the Gypsy though .
@ElainaFriedrichsen27 күн бұрын
Owen played the manipulative Gypsy who woos both girls and gets booted by the townsfolk - they have such great chemistry!

So glad to see this film in such great condition. A Beast at Bay is my favorite of the Griffith Biograph shorts.

Fairbanks doesn’t give a hoot about the poor wounded soldier. What a clown he is
the new score is beautiful and the film itself is really heartwarming ❤

It's wonderful seeing the degree of naturalism in films of this age, not all were like this by any means. Very easy to see why Pickford was so popular.

After he saved Pickford and she is apologizing for having thought him a coward, a better ending would have been for him to see a pretty bystander batting her eyes, and dumping Pickford on the spot to join up with the other woman.

One of my favorite early Mary Pickford short films for Biograph! I love the way she looks at Henry B. Walthall at the wooden fence entrance in their first scene. Veteran stage actor W. Chrystie Miller plays Mary’s father and beautiful English born Madge Kirby is the friend taking the baby for a walk. Madge would make more films for Biograph including The Painted Lady (1912) as Blanche Sweet’s sister. Madge would later appear in numerous short comedies, especially with Larry Semon.

You notice that the AB American Biograph logo on the wall during the interior scenes, to prevent other companies from making bootleg copies of their films. Mary as always is terrific in this film!

Lionel Barrymore wooing Mary while Henry B. Walthall is at the mining camp. I recognized Elmer Booth as one of the cowboys in the saloon and Harry Carey as one of the gold miners! Thank You for another terrific film!

This is the third Mary Pickford short that I’ve watched for the first time today on your page! Edwin August plays the boyfriend who comes to the rescue to free Mary from the escaped convict played by Alfred Paget who would later play Babylonian Prince Belshazzar in D.W. Griffith’s 1916 epic Intolerance. I also recognized Mae Marsh with Mary at the beginning of this film! Thank You for another priceless early Mary Pickford film! 😉

This is another very nice film with Mary Pickford and Gertrude Robinson as sisters being wooed by the gypsy played by Joseph Graybill (1887-1913). I love how you have restored these early Mary Pickford films with another nice music score! BTW, I’ve subscribed to your page too!

This is the first time that I’ve been able to watch this beautifully restored film with Mary Pickford ♥️ as the young lady and Walter Miller as the young man smitten with her! I was able to recognize the Gish sisters at the beginning as Bobby Harron is with Mary. I could also recognize Claire McDowell and her husband Charles Hill Mailes at the house that Mary spends the night at. Also Lionel Barrymore in the men’s club scene with Antonio Moreno as the valet. And of course Elmer Booth and Harry Carey as The would be thieves! Also I really loved the music score accompanying this film. Thank You for making this excellent film available for us to watch! 😉 Hopefully one day I can watch Mary’s early 1915 feature Mistress Nell with her first husband Owen Moore.

Great MP short! Nice to see her more in an action short, and driving as well, along with high production values too! The 1912 Biograph shorts certainly are alot better quality than 1909-1911!
