As referred to in the video, the Avanti was meant to be a "halo car" meaning to get attention and get people to the dealerships. And it did do that. They didn't expect to sell many as the price was the same as a Cadillac. Instead, once people got to the dealership they were expected to buy the regular lineup. People DID come to the dealerships but were simply afraid to buy from the shaky company. Also, at first, they really had no cars for the dealerships and flew the same two cars from town to town in cargo plane. They would set up bleachers, give out free "Avanti" stadium seat cushions, and had a lot of hoopla introducing the car. Then they would fly off with this "Avanti Airlift" marketing project to do the same in another city.

You might note there is no external trunk latch. Instead, there is a handle down low at the left side of the rear seat. It pulls on a wire cable connected to the latch. There is a small panel on the deck below the rear window where advertising shows a woman able to have access to move things to and fro from the trunk from inside the passenger cabin. That really isn't very practical, and the real reason was to provide access, via a long screwdriver, to the trunk latch should the release cable break. Otherwise, you would have to cut a hole in the trunk floor to get to it.

Another safety feature was the gas tank location. It is a rectangular box behind the rear seat. At the usual gas tank location under the trunk is the spare tire. It is accessed by a round removable panel that is part of the trunk floor. So, in a rear end collision, the first thing hit won't be the gas tank. Seatbelts were also standard which was not yet the case in all cars as seat belts were not yet federally mandated. I believe there was a "seatbelt delete" option, or perhaps that option to delete just the rear seat belts.

For the Starliner shown early in the video, you might notice the three pointed star logo, especially at 2:16. Mercedes-Benz told Studebaker that it resembled their three pointed emblem too much and could not use it. Studebaker obliged removed the downward pointing leg making it a V instead of a tri-star. Interestingly, Studebaker became the distributor for Mercedes-Benz in the U.S. and Canada from 1957-1963. And the door locks in the Avanti are Mercedes-Benz cone style door locks. These were better door locks than the typical and part of a safety improvement.

So today I was looking through the spy kids behind the scenes dvd, they included a modified version of the axiom concept in the movie, but the vehi cross convertible concept I can see it in the behind the scenes footage , but it looks like it never made it to the final cut of the film.

Rings true- the Fiero was neutered because of Corvette. They originally wanted the 3800 in the Fiero which would outrun anything GM could produce in that wide, light body. Corvette complained it would hurt them so they underpowered the Fiero. I will NEVER give a dime for a Chevrolet. Eff Chevy.

1:08:41 if Steel had been used and not switched with aluminum the building would have had a chance of not collapsing. Stainless steel offers superior corrosion resistance and tensile strength at the cost of added weight. When dealing with heat, stainless steel offers better heat tolerance while aluminum offers better heat conductivity. However, aluminum's lower melting point makes it less applicable in high-temperature applications.

I think he did an amazing job. No one at that time Expected any planes of that size would be created and they did design it to take a plane hit but it was only for the largest one they had in the late 60s early early 70’s. I’m glad he was not here to see it because i feel he would have blamed himeself.

Keep in mind that the _Banshee_ name is drawn from Celtic-Irish mythology, and that a banshee is a spirit whose howls and moans announce an impending death. Not exactly the image you want for a performance car.

4:40 Chek your facts and check the next few seconds of the video. MUSTANG I had a version of the V4 from the German Taunus. Not a bad engie and later versions became real rally stormers in the SAAB 96 and Sonett (that is the correct spelling) models

The later part of this documentary reminds me of an important lesson I learned when dealing with Japanese business culture. Japanese executive don't like saying, "no," to a proposal among other executives. It's considered rather rude. So they give various excuses about delays or possible complications when they actually mean, "no." If your proposal isn't given a definitive, "yes," it's not gonna happen. When the IDX stopped getting, "yes," as the definitive answer for production, it was already dead. Folks just forget how the Japanese corporate world tends to answer questions...

Detroit’s biggest problem is they refused to deliver to the public what they really wanted and or liked. You could have the hottest design available and by the time it went through the board room we ended up with an Edsel or the pacer. Americans are not that concerned with high performance, but styling is another story. When they came out with the new model Camaro in the early eighties they sold a ton of them and went right back to the junk.

Best engines are always honda ?! 😂😂😂 Sure , in your dreams! Best, unless the brand new cans they make got not recalled in quantity of hundreds & hundreds due multiple failures, from breaking miserably to oil failin', and we are talking of brand new engines !! 😄 Since 10 yrs Ducati make the best & most reliable engines , there's no match, and the other jap suck as they keep on making always the same average stuff...
