Perhaps but Rae Lakes is very popular ... lots of people hike the JMT and the Rae Lakes loop. But thanks for sharing your thoughts.

It looks totally free of snow! Did you encounter any on the way up? What time in the season was this? I’m thinking about doing this pass this summer..
@DavidFlinn25 күн бұрын
This was in August, so yes, totally free of snow. I think even July 2023 was free. Old Army Pass might have had snow in July. Enjoy!

@DavidFlinnАй бұрын
From the north, Onion Valley trailhead up over Kearsarge Pass is one. I started at Cottonwood Lakes trailhead to the south and hiked up Mount Whitney before Forester. Some folks depart from Mt. Whitney Portal, but that's a big elevation change, but it is possible. Have fun planning!

Hi David - Thank you for including me in your video! That was quite the adventure getting over Kersarge. I was so wipped from the altitude sickness I have almost no footage from that day, again so nice to see your videos. I'm also really enjoying your music selections. I'll hope to be back, likely in 2026. It looks like you had a really nice camp at Kearsrage Lake #3. Is that where you spent the next night as well? If not how far did you get that day? That had to be a tough 5 miles heading back to the summit. I'm sorry you ran out of storage near the end of your trip. Regardelss you captured some wounderful landscapes. I see my son commented below after I sent him the link :-) Maybe next time I can get him to go with me.

Hi David, Byer here. I'm very pleased to see your terrific video. What a beautiful day that was, even though I fell prey to altitude sickness. And because of your video I now have some very clear memories of that day. Thank you! I so much appreciate you checking up on me the next couple of days, it really meant a lot to have your encouragement and support, it truly helped. I owe you a pack of gummies :-) Also, a big shout out to Carolin and her wounderful friends for helping/saving me get over the top of Forester Pass and down to flowing water on the other side. What a sincere bleesing of angels that was. Carolin carried my pack and one of her friends carried her own and Caolin's, as Caolin's was lighter. They were former trail workers and SAR. I am grateful to all who supported me. I plan to watch your entire series, I'm so glad you made the journey. I like the music you chose and your low key approach to the video, it was a pleasure to watch. I wish you well sir. All the best.

I camped right there too, bro, before our final ascent of Whitney, 2016. It made me emotional seeing the exact camp spot again, down to the three pads we used. I got up at 4:30 am to look at stars and drink coffee and we started at dawn to walk up the icy path.

Enjoyed this video as I'm gearing up (literally and figuratively) for the JMT. What was it you called your red electronics bag? A satchmo? Is that a brand I don't know or just a nickname?
@DavidFlinn3 ай бұрын
Ha! Sorry for that bit of slang. Yeah, a satchemo is just standard pouch that I have from REI years ago. Good luck and get out there, even a long weekend trip is worth it. The North Lake - South Lake loop is a longer trek of 5 to 7 days but sooo worth it. Happy Trails!

Enjoy the hike. Just one comment. That composting bag for trash... you may want to upgrade to a 1 gal ziplock. After a 5 or 6 days that trash is gonna stink up your bear canister. Having a functional ziplock will be a useful upgrade to consider.
