Hey Ed, I'm just writing you a note to thank you. I built a quickly designed koi pond to fill a large pre-existing hole in my back yard in New Orleans, Louisiana back when I bought my home 20 years ago. Two months ago all my koi unfortunately died but I used the time to redesign and rebuild a new and improved pond. The old one was just a round hole with a sloped side and the liner was just held in place with flagstones. I never liked the noticeable liner folds or the noticeable liner edge all along under the stones and above the water line. I searched online for 'how to build a koi pond" and your KZbin videos popped up. I spent all my free time watching all your videos to make sure I did the redesign job right. I redug the hole deeper with 2 defined depths (and not a gradual slope) and ordered a new liner (and fleece this time) and new filtration system. You inspired me to create a back wall inner circular wall to be a full length mortared brick wall installed over the liner (with an underdug retaining support and plenty liner scaps padding between). The entire perimeter was upgraded by notching out a line for a row of mortared in bricks over the upper edge of the liner and I also mortared in all the edging flagstones for a much more finished look (including an overflow valve and conduit for cords). All the bricks and flag stones came from my property but I did buy riverstones to cover the floor of the upper shelf. I just added all the koi last week (decided to have butterfly koi this time) and it all looks amazing and is now a center point for the yard (with an added gong sculpture behind it). The whole process took three weeks of grueling work in New Orleans summer heat but I lost weight and got a great tan. I took pics of all the steps so if you would like to see how great it turned out (especially the back wall), I would be happy to send them to you. My email is [email protected] - I truly appreciate finding you on KZbin and want to thank you for sharing your expertise.

If you want to put bacterial in fhe filter.. You can put them in the uv section when you remove the unit? If i am right the pond water comes first passing the uv light en then thru the filtermedium to the outlet? Cant find the exact flow thru the filter on internet ..
@CrystalClearAquatics
@CrystalClearAquatics 13 күн бұрын
Hi there! Great question-and one I’m Not 100% sure I’m but now I will Def check next time I take a filtoclear apart! I’m pretty certain however that water enters the unit around the uvc first and out of some outlets at the bottom of the uvc housing into the filter chamber itself. Water is then forced through the filter foams and through a perforated core that surrounds the uvc chamber and then flows to the top of the filter and to the outlet. You could therefore add filter aids to the unit by simply removing the quick release uvc ballast (although not so on the latest gen filtoclears) and add treatments directly here. Making sure to turn off the uvc for a couple of days to allow the bacteria to colonise away from the uvc rays. Thanks for watching and your question! Best, Ed

@@CrystalClearAquatics 👍it works .. Perfect way for adding bacterial in the filter ... Did it yesterday.. Also a good moment for uv glas cleaning. I dont use the uv light but clean is always better .. Got the 30000 just because i wanted a big filter .. Runs on a superfish eco 5000.. I prefer a bigger filter for less flushes.. Once a month now..

Hi Ed, I have two OASE live water pumps for my Koi pond. Since I moved in the house with this lovely Koi pond, the pumps have been working fine. Till last week I found the water level has dropped dramatically in last couple of days and then found out one of pumps are leaking water out of the blue handle areas. Any idea how to fix this leaking? Is that because of the rubber band installed in the blue / silver handles?? Many thanks in advance!

Hi there! Sorry to hear of your issues; could you please confirm if water is leaking from the blue rotary dial that you twist when performing a back wash, or if the leak is from one or both of the stainless steel rods that’s connected to the blue handle you pull when performing a back wash? Wonderful video Ed! Thanks so much for sharing. The only thing we do differently is that the filter itself is not buried directly into the ground. We instal a large flower pot or bin with holes (marginally larger than the bucket itself) and then sit the filter into it. Makes for easy removal over winter :-) Cheers!

@@CrystalClearAquatics Yes, of course! Ontario, Canada! Because of freezing temps, we have to remove the filter for winter. However, many customers want to remove the filter during the season too, but once it's dug into the ground, it ain't ever coming out (without a lot of blood, sweat and tears LOL). Keep up the great work Ed 🙂

Good idea with the cables, but I wonder why not feed them through before you buried the conduit, then any mistake would be easier to rectify 🤔

@CrystalClearAquatics 7 күн бұрын
Hi Patrick, thanks for watching and commenting. I could indeed pre feed cables though conduit before burial, ensuring no issues. However it’s important to me to know that cables can be easily fed through the conduits once they’ve been buried or routed through the pond edging-if not it defeats the object of having conduits in the first place as I want to ensure that future removal/adding of flex is possible without having to dig up the conduits again! Can I go off on a slight tangent. Without wishing to sound like Mr Nanny State, can we all be careful when we're at work. I was prising some glued on wood from a structure yesterday using a sharp tool. Some of it was pretty stubborn and I was giving it serious oomph. The wood suddenly broke free and I've drove the tool deep into the base of my thumb muscle. I actually screamed. I'm on thinners and it looked like the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I'm not exaggerating to say you'd think my patio is made of red, not cream, flagstones. This morning my hand resembles an inflated washing up glove. Could be a trip to A&E. We all get distracted, take short cuts ( I was trying to get the job done before imminent rain. It was a side gate that I couldn't close because of rain swelling and I didn't want my security compromised ). Sometimes we use the nearest tool or think our normal glasses are sufficient to protect our eyes. I wear gloves almost 100% of the time when working, for cleanliness as much as anything else. I just forgot yesterday, not sure why, it's almost second nature for me to don gloves. They would have saved me, certainly lessened the injury. I've only been on here scant weeks and I'm already reporting a nasty injury. Life can change in the blink of an eye. Walking backwards to get a different perspective on a job is a real bad habit of mine. Something very small and light can bring you down when you're in reverse. Please guys, concentrate, don't rush, use the right tools and safety gear. You've only got one body and replacement parts aren't readily available. Ed has to talk and work at the same time to make the videos. After my own disaster yesterday my heart was in my mouth a few times watching him move around what is inevitably a chaotic area. Sorry to preach guys, I know I'm new on here and I sound like a Harry Enfield character. We all get complacent though. DON'T.

@CrystalClearAquatics
@CrystalClearAquatics 20 күн бұрын
Hi there Phil, is the water coming out of the cleaning outlet/secondary outlet at the full force of the pump? If so i’d double check you connections and make sure you’ve not accidentally fitted the pump feed to the outlet of the filter rather then the inlet. There’s arrows embossed on the filter unit that clearly show the direction of water flow; in and out. If however its a trickle coming out of the secondary cleaning outlet this can be normal- the blue rotary cleaning dial isn’t designed to be fully water tight, as the resistance in turning the valve would be too great if so. This is why the cleaning outlet should be blanked off with the provided threaded end cap to prevent water loss from the filter. Only during cleaning should this be removed and a cleaning hose attached. Some people do leave their cleaning hose attached permanently for convenience sake, but I never recommend this unless additional taps/valves are added to prevent the risk of water loss. Hope this helps! Best regards, Ed

Wish you were over here in Portugal, we would have you sort our pond out in a jiffy! We've got major leak issues with a waterfall into the pond. It's made of stacked rock slabs on concrete back-pointed with cement/sand (mixed at 4:1) to prevent water loss - clearly ineffectual despite retaining the pretty stone look. Where are we going wrong???
@CrystalClearAquatics
@CrystalClearAquatics 20 күн бұрын
Hi there Martin, thanks for watching and commenting-sadly you’re a little too far from me for me to offer my services (although i’d love a holiday to Portugal) !! Ideally your cascade should have been built on top of a waterproof lining/membrane- a sand and cement based mortar-even if waterproofed- all too easily can shift and crack causing leaks. Even if fully sealed inside by painting on a waterproofing resin such as G4 its unlikely you’ll be able to get a good lasting waterproof seal long term. Ideally I’d dismantle and re-build on an overlapping piece of pond liner that extends down into the pond. Best regards, Ed

Do each individual light go into the oase transformer and then to the external transformer with photocell? Is there a different way to connect each light with wire?
@CrystalClearAquatics
@CrystalClearAquatics Ай бұрын
Hi there Tina- thanks for watching and commenting! Each light plugs directly into the included oase transformer (which can be positioned submersed in the pond or outside above water level). The one single power supply lead from the transformer then needs to be connected to a power supply-either via a standard socket, exterior switch box etc etc. Although I haven’t done so you could connect the oase transformer to the input of a photocell such as the below link, then the output from the photo cell to a power supply. This will allow operation of the lighting via an automatic light sensor! www.superlecdirect.com/8485-ellumiere-automatic-light-sensor/?hsa_acc=5149061780&hsa_cam=17724182852&hsa_grp=&hsa_ad=&hsa_src=x&hsa_tgt=&hsa_kw=&hsa_mt=&hsa_net=adwords&hsa_ver=3&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw4ri0BhAvEiwA8oo6F6sNK3MCiepENgJTduQVPFCNhYtm7OxHNbyT_Yb3OfAeQOsUmFww4xoCtwgQAvD_BwE Best, Ed

Although looking at this particular sensor looks like you would need one for every light and these aren’t submersible- so do some research before purchasing anything! Look ideally for a mains voltage light sensor that can be plugged in before the transformer! Best, Ed

Hi Ed, I'm new to your channel and enjoy how you create a pond. One issue I noticed you don't look to create a natural eco system using Bog filters and inlets filters using natural plants... is there a reason, why? I'm looking to create my own pond and thinking on bog and inlets filter only and don't want to make a mistake.
@CrystalClearAquatics
@CrystalClearAquatics Ай бұрын
Hi there! Welcome to the channel and thanks so much for watching and commenting. I get asked this quite frequently regarding Bog/ wetland filtration in ponds; my reasoning for not using such methods for filtration is because I’m building Ponds for paying clients, who’s expectations are for their pond to have clean, clear water and utilising equipment that can be easily maintained by them (or me if I’m called in to service their pond!). For me, using modern filtration equipment such as displayed on my videos means I can essentially guarantee clear water-using some simple formulas any volume of water can clarified when utilising the correct size pump, filter and uvc. They same cannot be said for natural wetland filtration. I love the concept but it’ll take a while for a wetland filtration system to establish and mature and although only occasional, such systems will require maintenance and when they do it’ll be a bigger and more specialist job then performing a simple clean on, for example a pressurised filter system. I hope one day a client requests such a system as I’d love to build one! Best regards, Ed
