You can hear it when he talks to Vergil. Hes tired. Instead of a bunch of witty comebacks, when he fights urizen for the final time he sounds like hes in pain and frustrated. He clearly misses his family and when vergil chooses power over him hes very annoyed. Urizen says something like "this is all I've ever wanted. True power!" And dante replies "you've been chasing this power for eternity but it's nothing but useless SHIT!" Very unlike the wacky woohoo pizza man. He even tries to reason with urizen before he ate the fruit where as dmc 3 or 4 dante would've definitely talked some shit

If anybody can turn down Lady I'd imagine he'd have to be pretty afraid of letting anyone on

Honestly damn near everything involving Vergil is a traumatic event for Dante, the creators of dmc had a light novel/manga about Dante and how he started out as the more edgy non joking devil hunter called Toney Redgrave. He ended up being good friends with the gunsmith who made him ebony and ivory. To make a long story short Vergil tracked Dante down and killed what little friends he had including the guy who owned the bar where the devil hunters would stop at.

Not really secretly, it's a blatant fact that Dante and Vergil are fucked up mentally and have fears and traumas that they try to cover up

Dante is traumatized his childhood is what turned him into what he is now he's probably scared to lose his family again which is maybe another reason why he doesn't want Nero involved during DMC 5
