Hey rail enthusiasts, I have a dumb question. I thought I'd finally ask. When I was a kid of 16, I used to hop freight trains to see where they were going, and once to go from Emeryville, Calif. to Canada to see what it was like up there (only made it to Eugene, Ore). When I was 27 I worked with this guy who had a terminal illness so, wishing to show him a good time before he went away, I showed him how to ride the rails from Glendale, Calif to the artichoke capital of the world, Watsonville. ANyway, during all of my travels, I never observed a loco that had been shut off. They were just left idling, sometimes for days. This was in the '60s and 70s. Is this still the practice? I asked a SP guy once (back in the day) and got an earful of every swear word and obscenity that he probably knew and in the end he said NO they are NEVER shut off, but I sensed that he was a lying SOB. Seems pretty wasteful if true. I have other even dumber questions, but I will spare you, for now. -F

@@farleymusclewhite411 newer locomotives automatically shut down after sitting idle for 15min but will restart if they get too cold or the battery needs charging. The reason older locomotives never turned off is it used less fuel to just keep running than it did shutting off and starting back up

I have to say that this is some of your most brilliant work to date. These aerial droneshots really show the massive space in Western Canada along with the huge blue sky while the trains are dwarfed by this. Okay I have a question So you've got the lead engine in the front then you may have an engine in the middle and one at the end how do they control the other two engines the one in the middle and the one at the end is it hardwired or is it radio signal or what is it so that they can control the RPMs of those other two engines so that they're not pushing the train when they don't want it to be pushed? And like in this instance how did they get the engines in the middle and the engine on the end to go into reverse?
@TonyVRailfanning
