Really great review. Love the format! I myself have the 70-200 GM II and I must say it probably is the best zoom lens I've ever used as well. The weight difference is such an important aspect and it's one of the reasons it's so expensive while delivering literally everything one could ever ask for. I must add that the lens cap design on the sigma is a real annoyance to me. Not only does it cover the zoom ring partly but also blocks it even more if you reverse mount it which i sometimes do, and that you can't click it closed. Feels cheap but hey that's one of the ways they cut cost. If I didn't have a 70-200 I would def consider the sigma more than anything for the money if you do not are about fps and use of TC.

Enjoying watching this a year later. I had the original Sony 70-200 F4G OSS for quite some time, and purchased it for quite the steal. Then.. over a year and a bit later, I came across a lightly used sigma 70-200 F2.8 for only $300 more than I paid for my used Sony… Selling my sony now for exactly what I paid back then and I am in a very good spot! It is a fantastic lens. The size is a little large… but dang its build quality is so great!!!

Thank you. I’ve had great Sony 70-200/2.8 GM and the GM II since it came out and love it. Maybe if the Sigma had come out earlier. Also just acquired the small/lighter used mint Sony 70-200/4 MACRO G OSS II and using it on an A7CR and A7CII which for me is a perfect combo. Was curious what Sigma had accomplished. Take care.

Compelling lens, but I've had my eye on the Sony f/4 so I was pleased to hear your take on it. BTW, the reflection you captured with the Sigma off of the jet window at 2:06 was a 'Whoa!!' moment for me! Its good to have so many choices!

Thanks Hugh. Might trade down from my 90-280 for this and release some funds for the SL3 or S1ii. BTW, the Sigma 100-400 in L mount which I got recently is obviously slower than these but similar to the M43 version and also hand holdable on the SL2.

I hear you on the trade down! Didn’t like the 100-400 nearly as much, though, and I’d say the DG Leica 100-400 is a superior optic - I think it’s great!

Add the new Leica 70-200 f2.8 L mount lens to the list, selling at over 3000 USD and their expensive teleconverters for extra FL. Identical optical design to the Sigma 70-200 2.8, but without the buttons and aperture ring, at over twice the cost in that uber-sleek and heavier Leica metal body. And 82mm (Leica - like all their zooms) vs 77mm filter threads in the Sigma. I'd love to have the Leica, but not at over twice the cost and heavier weight (200+ grams).

Great review and I got mine before Christmas. only one issue with the lens...Why in the hell did Sigma place the zoom ring at the end of the lens?

As Sony is artificially crippling third party lenses - fps limitations, no focus breathing compensation - I wanted to know how the L mount version of the Sigma 70-200 performs. I really want to get this lens, however, I’ve seen multiple store pages already and most of them say that this one is used for full frame camera’s. Is it usable with APS-C camera’s as well? (Specifically the Sony a6400)

The Panasonic has nicer bokeh. Also my Panasonic sample is extermely sharp wide open at 200mm, really not sure the Sigma is as sharp from the reviews I've seen. But there are stil a lot of copy variation with these zooms ...

Sigma will release an update and it will have full fps speed also yes it s heavier than gmiii but lighter than version i, for those who are in the market it s incredible value for money! I m selling my 70-200 2.8 G1 for this Sigma
