Being a professional fashion/beauty photographer for over 35 years, I’ve used a lot of different camera systems. Incl. the most recent R, Z and A mirrorless systems. Yet, 2 years ago I decided to use the SL2 and later the SL2-S for professional work, next to my M and Q, that I already had for personal work. The alignment in menu systems and buttons, next to Capture One and Profoto support, were decisive factors. I can honestly say, to me it’s the best system I’ve ever used. These cameras are a joy to work with and the lenses are fantastic. Sure, I’ll have a look at the SL3, when it arrives and probably will buy one. But the SL2 and esp. the S is here to stay. Well put, Hugh.

What would be the reason for you buying an sl3?
@jacobh581710 ай бұрын
@@peetje28021970 in the studio, I now have an SL2 and an SL2-S as back-up. Would be nice to have a high-res as back-up, but not essential. For static work I also use an X1DII. However, I started to like the SL2 also for personal work, with e.g. M lenses. If the SL3 is substantially smaller (like a Z7 or an A7R) that would be a benefit. I don’t care for the extra MPs. 47MP is enough for me and I love the rendering of the 47MP sensor/processor, even over the 60MP of the M11. Although I do recognize that the 47MP is a bit noisier above ISO1600, compared to the 60MP. Having said that, in the studio we almost never go above ISO400, but if you use the camera for available light, that might be a benefit for the SL3 as well (assuming it will have the same sensor as the M11 and Q3). As for AF, I’m perfectly happy with the SL2 and SL2-S. With the latest firmware, I’ve never had issues with the stuff that I do.

There's an old bit of advice my father was given when pursuing his IFR (instrument flight rating): "Fly the plane, not the radios". As a pilot, your #1 job is keep your aircraft safely aloft, and that means first keeping your eyes on your basics (altimeter, artificial horizon, bank indicator, compass), not on the tech doodads that help you navigate - those are important in getting you to your destination, but if you're in a 1g descending spiral while you futz with the settings you'll still crash. This applies to so much else, including camera bodies - they are the radios, the lenses are the planes. If you don't have to futz with the body because you know it and trust it, then it fades away while you keep your eye on what really matters. If you know that SL2 inside and out, and trust it, why not keep it?

Both seem quite approachable in the used market now.

SL2, SL2-S, SL3? Hugh, I have been on a wait list for the SL3 for over a year and will buy one when it comes out. Like you, I have been turning over the issue of whether to keep my SL2. It is the best camera I have ever owned and is so easy to shoot when set to manual mode. I have taken many street portraits and candid street shots. All that said, I think it might make more sense to buy/sell trade the SL2 for an SL2-S (assuming that I am going to retain an SL2 generation camera after I buy the SL3). That would provide a better low light capable camera (and video, if I was so inclined), and would not just be a somewhat lesser version of the new SL3, sitting unused while the newer, shinier glitzier purchase gets taken out for the walk. The SL2-S provides somewhat less redundancy, with 80% of the current SL2 resolution. Either way, it provides the backup camera for a "trip of a lifetime" when one can't afford to forego first rate backup. All fun to think about. Bob

Thoughtful comments, well timed; thank you. I have an SL-2 with several Leica lenses including the SL f/2 90mm APO (best lens I've ever owned on any camera). For comparatively short money, I bought a Sony A7R5 (state-of-the-art autofocus) along with the Sony FE 200-600 lens for birds-in-flight and wildlife, subjects the SL-2 was not designed for. I use the SL-2 for everything else, plus I can shoot all my M lenses from my M10-R. I'll likely never upgrade the M10-R either.

A couple of things come to mind. First, passing on any sort of electronic gadget to kids, whether they'll receive this tomorrow or 20 years from now is just hanging a brick around their neck. Good luck trying to get that brink repaired in five years let alone 20 years from now. I have a lovely Leica X1. Needs a little work. Nope. No longer supported. Have an M8 that was recently bricked by a firmware update. That can be repaired. However the cost is more than just finding another M8 on eBay. M9 sensor corrosion can no longer be repaired. Point is shoot your SL2. Enjoy it. Upgrade when you want. Don't expect it to last like your mother's III from an era of simple non-electronic things. Second, I sold my SL2 in 2023. Great camera. However the lack of a flip or tilt screen was hampering my shooting ability. Replaced the SL2 with a Panasonic S5II. Great shooting camera crippled by massively confusing menus. Paired with the non-APO SL lenses this camera performs very well. Will I get an SL3? Will Leica include a flip screen? Finally another consideration for me will be how well my TL lenses work on an SL3. Terrific on the SL2. Hoping for the best. Thanks for this presentation. Have a fabulous 2024.

Ever since I started shooting with the Q3, I find myself less inclined to part with my SL2S. With the Q3, I feel like I have solved the, need to have a Leica with amazing auto-focus, resolved - for now. Leica seems to have bet on taking over serious video/content production market.... ok their bodies arent there yet in term of AF but everything else is IMO. If you take their lenses. lots of APO (which can make a big difference in video) and they are all designed to be same size and weight (you can change lense without recalibrating rig....)... pretty smart. I think they are the only ones who thought about that. Ok they are focus by wire but that makes me think they know their future generations of bodies will have really good AF. just a matter of upgrading bodies down the road. They even aligned color profiles from the SL2 to SL2S a few firmwares ago.... They really think system.... And its the most open system on the market with the L mount but also because its the only system that has a sensor that fully supports M lenses.... oh and they support S and RF lenses with AF... I mean thats pretty well thought overall to be honest.... I cant see a more complete system from any manufacturer.... Im going to keep my SL2 as a backup when the SL3 comes out. I used my SL2S for photos in the deep amazon jungle and it was flawless. SL3 will probably bring AF to competition level. with probably the 60mp sensor and maybe hopefully integrated storage. dont need much more...... @johnkasianowicz653610 ай бұрын
You don’t need my vote, but I think the SL2 in your hands is first-rate photographic tool (you could make Brownie box photos look great). The L-mount lenses offered by Sigma (well worth the coin) and Leica are excellent, and a Leica M-Adapter-L opens up the M lens rabbit hole to explore. My only gripe about L-mount lenses is the lack of a super telephoto. I have the SL2, M11, and digital CL, but have lately been thinking about keeping all of those getting a Nikon Z9 + Nikkor 600 mm f/4 TC (just for long FL “needs”). That said, I’ve been testing out my skill with the Leica SL 100-400 tele zoom, and perhaps I’d better forget about using anything longer. I agree that the Leica Summicron-SL 35 is a stunning lens. A used one for under $3K is a great deal. I picked up a bunch of M lenses used. The savings allowed me to buy even more lenses.

@@peetje28021970 I’m still testing it. Thus far, it’s relatively light weight, and performs pretty well on the SL2 and digital CL. To be critical, it seems a little soft on the long end (400 mm), but that’s judged from pixel peeping. I have no regrets buying the lens and will undoubtedly get a lot of good use out of it. At 560 mm (with the dedicated 1.4x tele extender attached), it looks like there’s a tiny bit of spherical aberration added to the images. I’ll soon know if that persists at lesser focal lengths by comparing similar focal lengths w/and w/o the tele extender.

Very beautifully summarised as always. The older model of a camera doesn't become worse merely because there is a newer version (even if the SL3 is stunning). It's still the same tool it was before. And hence assuming a constraint budget, it seems wise to consider whether spending one's hard earned cash either on lenses or in fact on experiences may be better. Unfortunately, my eyes are becoming less reliable and I am often way too slow focussing with my trusted M240. I finally would like to make the move to an autofocus camera. Question is whether to buy into a completely different system (Canon, Sony, etc). For example the Canon EOS R6 Mark II Digital Camera with 24-105mm f4 L Lens for just over £3K. Or get a used SL2? But then the lenses are so expensive, Bells & whistles vs exquisite design and functionality. It focusses the mind on what is really important for one's work (or hobby in my case) rather than sheer numbers on a spec sheet.

Another beautiful video. I was wondering what happened with your SL2. I just sold my SL2 as I have never been happy with the speed. The camera has always felt slow to me which is not always a problem but is sometimes frustrating. Adding to the slowness of operation is that I needed to always hit a button to get live depth of field preview with auto focus lenses rather than have it be automatic. Also, while it has lots of options for customization, the lack of being able to disable AF with the joystick or any button goes against how I like to operate the camera. You can’t also program a Panasonic camera’s rear AF button to do this. So, if I wanted to stay with another L mount camera, I’m out of luck. I still do have my L mount lenses in the hope that an SL3 will work better for me. For now, I’m enjoying Nikon. I first got a Z7ii and recently a Z8. On the Z8, everything just works so fast. There will always be people who want the latest gear because they think it matters, which is nonsense. With every camera that is on the market right now you can make the most beautiful images and capture the most beautiful memories. I got a silver sl2, a black sl2s with battery pack, a sl2s reporter and a q2 reporter, I don’t see myself upgrading bodies for the next 5 years, I’ll be buying lenses, all Leica to get the most out of my system. I had Nikon for like 25 years, switched to Canon and had the best bodies, the best lenses, and I still switched to Leica just over a year ago and I’ve never been so happy. Sure, the Eos 1DX mk2 had a better autofocus system but I’m not a sports photographer, neither am I a fulltime wildlife photographer so I don’t need it to be perfect under all circumstances for my landscape photography. If that would be the most important thing about a camera how could there be the M system. Some will say, yeah but the new one will have more steps of IBIS, yeah, but when is it enough? Years ago when IBIS came out everybody was over the moon with 4 stops, now they upgrade cameras for 7 stops. You have to question yourself if you buy cameras for the sake of having the latest gear and technology or if you are a photographer who can take pictures with a camera as simple as let’s say an m10 or 11 or even an m6. Most of the most iconic pictures ever taken were taken with cameras as simple as like an m6. If you arent happy with the pictures you take with the camera you own today how is it possible that you were very happy when you bought it 4 years ago? I’m not falling for it.

SL3 in about 2 months time. It'll be even cheaper with the SL2 and SL2S.

If you have a ton of money to waste, it’s a great idea. These aren’t Sony a6100s that are cheap to the point you don’t even care.

I looked at SL. Huge! Lenses are monsters! Yet! I examined the Sony, plastic crap! I was shocked! I own an early Minolta digital. I use it in BW only. 15 years later, still cannot work that menu! So in terms of that, go SL. Not for me!

My GF overheard me watching this video and asked me to write here that you have the sexiest voice… and that she loves her Q2. 😊

For a high-end luxury brand that is Leica it was a utterly stupid decision to have the SL-2 with Contrast-Detection AF. Another unforgivable flaw with Leica is their lack of Quality-Control checks on their products that are being manufactured, ie there have been problems from the outset with their M series cameras which should have been fixed BEFORE shipping to retailers; considering the above criticisms Leica should not have the right to call itself a luxury brand.

Was it worth in 2023? Then it's most likely worth in 2024. Thank me later, guys. Bye.

I still have an SL and an S but, frankly, I think I will get rid of them as I almost exclusively use Μs and I cant see me using big heavy unwieldy slower cameras that make less interesting pictures.
@johnkasianowicz653610 ай бұрын
Why would an S or SL series camera take less interesting pictures than an M series camera?

Search me. But they do, at least in my hands.

L mount is dead. Don’t waste your money. Better off owning a platform that’ll most likely be around for a few years.

You read a lot of nonsense on the internet and this is in the top3 today

A mount is even deader (Sony didn't have new cameras and lenses with A mount in the last few years) and I still use it more than E mount.
