It’s not been a fun harvest. 4 weight oats and 2 weight barley that probably won’t make malt although I don’t rely on it making malt as a rule. I somehow managed to swath my wheat and get it picked up without getting much rain on it so no sprouts and decent colour. Canola is done so just flax left. I’m glad I didn’t swath the flax yet, it would not have liked all of this wind. Looks like the weather is improving for next week so it might be swath flax one day and pick it up the next type of thing. As long as the 1682 takes the flax straw alright and doesn’t wrap too much. It’s funny, not that many years ago the combining didn’t really start until October. Now, once it just turns to October, I get panicky and want it to end so I can haul my straw bales home and get my fall banding done.
@roosty64 сағат бұрын
Same thing here as I started harvest weeks ago. Maybe combine a day or two and then sit and wait for the rain to stop and crop dry up. A week goes by and nothing accomplished. Not unusual for me to be combining in the last half of October. I quit growing flax 7 years ago for health reasons. Mine and the machinery's.

Cold miserable and wet here today. Not as windy as down south by any means but still not nice out in the open. Next week sounds like slightly better weather so hopefully you can get back at it. Might be the last kick at the can unfortunately.

For sure every day gets a little shorter with less drying time. But I've also done some night time combining in later October too.

Good evening Ralph in Manitoba we get to much wind too I just hope the weather gets nice again so we can finish our harvest, the corn silage is finished today not as much as in other years but at least there is no corn to combine this year last year it took to mid December to get that done. I reckon the cats pulled straws which one goes outside to check when the food is coming 😉

Hey roosty. Been a long time follower of your channel, in fact it’s what inspired me to buy my own 7721, just wanted to ask a question. What made you choose a self propelled swather over a pulltype, I settled for a pulltype due to price, but honestly I have grown quite fond of it
@roosty62 күн бұрын
I liked the pull type Massey #35 21 foot swather and used it for years in cereal grains but found it could not handle a heavy canola crop. Plus with all the sloughs and bushes to cut around I'd run over a lot of crop. Self propelled swather lets me cut the fields into manageable sections without running over crop. Maybe the newer pull types can handle canola better than the old Massey 35.
@Jigglypoundage2 күн бұрын
@@roosty6 gotcha, thanks for the info. I run a 25ft case 8220 and that is pretty fantastic for me. It was handling 6ft rye but I know canola is a whole other animal!

I'm not to sure why you wait so long in the year to harvest. Everyone in the area is just about done
@roosty62 күн бұрын
Well lets see. I wait for the grain to be ready. I don't dessicate like many others do so that makes mine a little later. Machines break and take time to fix. I don't have a grain dryer so I wait til the grain is dry enough for safe storage before harvesting it.

I still got some potatoes in the garden too, but I think they will last till end of October, going to grow more next year. Last Friday we started with the soybeans about a quarter is done now but a field or two still greenish so that has to wait for a while.
