That is the most minimal prop strike I have ever seen. I'm sure there's been a lot worse that were never reported. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if prop-shop wouldn't balance it with a minor filing on both ends, and use it on another plane, "after selling you a new one through insurance". Everything is cha-ching, when it has wings.

Beyond the actual prop, interested to hear if any engine damage. I wonder what the percentage of prop strike vs actual engine damage is. Always wonder why a slip clutch isn't standard in the industry. No worry of bent parts beyond a new prop or rebuild on just prop. Good luck w repairs.

We were bored and calculated how far the plane traveled per rotation of the prop using estimated taxi speeds and RPM then looked at the length of the high part of the rise in the pavement. According to our rough calculations, if the prop rotation had been 90° different, there's a good chance it wouldn't have hit at all. Again, rough calculations and we were bored.
@lowandslow5 ай бұрын
@@JP_Flys There is no calculating something like that. You screwed up somewhere, most likely taxing to fast with a quartering tailwind and it picked the tail up far enough to hit the prop.

Oooof I am sorry to hear about this. I can't imagine the frustration you're feeling right now. I'll be curious to see if your insurance company tries to put liability on the airport. There's a guy at my field who had a prop strike at a fly-in. They were parking planes on the grass and his nose gear went into a hole that they airport had failed to identify. The airport's insurance ended up paying the bulk of the costs. Regardless of what happens that way, I hope they can get your plane back to you quickly.
@JP_Flys5 ай бұрын
It's a known thing. Insurance said they probably won't go after the airport cause of what it will cost them compared to paying for my damage. They will, however, be calling the airport manager asking them to fix the problem. It is frustrating but I think I have another plane that belongs to a friend that I can use.

So the canard survived sitting in the bottom of the trailer without any tiedowns? Did you install the larger engine mount extrusions yet?
@JP_Flys6 ай бұрын
The canard made it just fine. There were walls and a solid floor on the trailer protecting it from getting picked up by wind plus the drive was only 10 miles. The extrusions have not been installed yet due to cold and other modifications needed before they are installed. The project is on a brief hold due to it being so cold and some things going on in my personal life. Should be back to working on it soon.

I know it was originally designed to be a simplistic plane but, for me, I want it to be as easy as possible to operate safely. The Long Ez/Varieze page on Facebook would be the best place to ask. My gear is a Wilhelmson unit but I know there are 2 different people working on their own version of electric nose gear for these planes. I built a cozy, and go to fly-ins pretty regularly. I have gotten rides in a couple of long ezs. What I have always been told is when you go from a 235 to a larger engine it completely changes the experience of flying a long ez, and highly recommended. Another consideration for the engine upgrade is weight and balance. I am a larger guy also and the weight and balance can be different in these planes with more weight up front. You might want to check the current weight and balance with your size and see if more weight in the engine compartment would be beneficial to the weight and balance of the plane. Looking forward to seeing more updates 👍
@JP_Flys7 ай бұрын
I have taken a flight in one with the 235 and one with a... spicy... 320 and while both were phenomenal, the 320 was noticeably faster and had a shorter takeoff roll. As far as weight and balance, I don't have that documentation. Plan is to mount everything that does not have an "optional" location then try to get the balance done with equipment that can be moved.
@HDDD27 ай бұрын
Merry Christmas Justin. It looks like you and I are doing a similar upgrade. I’m in KOLM; wish I would have thought about trying to remove the side bolts before drilling into the side to find the lock-nuts; but the original builder assisted and we “got-r-done”; just have 4 holes to patch & paint. O320 Engine parts are in Tulsa now (Divco & and Aircraft Specialties); won’t get back ‘til March. Still have Throttle Quadrant & Stick to replace, Boost Pump, EIS and new 2-Axis Servos to install in the meantime. Going from O235 with Carb & Mags to O320-Fuel Injection with Dual Electronic Ign. (O235 sat too long…)
@JP_Flys7 ай бұрын
Not sure I'm out of the woods yet. I was given the go ahead to reuse the nuts as long as I can torque them down properly. If not, I'm going to have to drill holes. Fortunately I can use the existing bolt holes to fairly precisely locate where it will need to be opened up.

Dude; no need for the hammer - heat would have got them loose. I use a massive soldering iron to provide local heat in such circumstances. Do you have a set of plans? There are hard points bonded into the spar for those bolts. I’m guessing you’re going with the 1.5x1.5 2024T3 extrusions for the heavier 0-320?
@JP_Flys7 ай бұрын
I was instructed to use the hammer especially since the aluminum isn't wrapped with epoxy.
