Looking forward to watching your progress. My LongEZ is currently in my garage waiting for a similar effort, so this series will be huge for me. Thank you!

Great looking EZ! Please share all the details as you go along.

Looking forward to following this rebuild Justin! It's my life goal to build one of these... I saw a video on these in the 80's, and fell immediately in love with it... I need to find one around here (West-central WI) to get a back seat ride... Anyway, looks like a great project! There's not enough EZ content here, so thanks for sharing!

DUUUUUUDE!! I'm SO happy I stumbled on to your channel/project. My dad and I were HUGE fans of Rutan designs, and he wanted to buy a LongEze and do exactly what you're doing! I'm an A&P, and got my certs partly for JUST THAT REASON! He passed away back in '20, but I've since decided to do just what you're doing as an homage to my dad, my hero. Thank you for posting this, thank for being so smart about the way you're going to do it, and thank you for posting this video series! Please keep them coming, because I'll be DROOLING over the content! Cheers!!!

Aviation has always been in my blood and these have been on my radar for a long (pun intended???) time. I never had time or money to do anything with aviation though cause I was married and spent all my time with my wife. She passed away in 20 as well so I've focused my life on aviation now. I will keep the videos coming although it may be one every few weeks but I'll have another one up soon going more into my past and my mission with the plane. Thanks for the support!

@@JP_Flys I'm so sorry for your loss, my friend! God bless you. I'll be waiting eagerly for the next videos in this series. You've got a gorgeous example to start with, and I'm excited to see how you upgrade and polish the old gal! Cheers!!

That looks like a very clean build, you have a nice airframe! As you plan your panel I would recommend that you move the auto pilot control panel up high on the instrument panel. You have the GTN in top spot in your mock up. With the G3X your GTN almost becomes a secondary item as far as needing it in your primary view (up high). Just some thoughts...
@JP_Flys7 ай бұрын
Good idea. The reason I have it setup lower is so I can stabilize my arm on my leg while trying to manipulate the GTN. I plan on making a mockup panel that I can mount everything in for a test run (with actual components) and make changes as I see fit before cutting the final piece out of carbon.

I've got a 1000hrs in my Long-EZ since completing it in late 2007. I was pretty much stock but with long rudders, hidden bell cranks, Ronz canard and an 0-320 160hp. I have since added electric speed brake and nose gear actuations. I'm just over 900lbs but I will say they fly better if they're lighter. Regardless, I would still add electric SB and gear. Not sure if you realize that you're suppose to put your feet behind the rudder pedals for comfort during cruise. You might beed skinny shoes like Puma Cats. I'm 6'2" and 210 with big feet and I'm really comfortable once my feet are behind the pedals.
@JP_Flys8 ай бұрын
The problem is that it's uncomfortable to operate the pedals when I need to use them.

Really cool…want to do the same. Just finishing A&P, will start the process for finding an aircraft. In fact outfitting my truck for traveling the country help with projects. Hopefully meet up at future events. Just finished my PPL also, You have to start some where…great job!

For a 2 place airplane, you may want to consider skipping the separate intercom (unless you are putting in 2 radios) and go with just a GTR200B (which has a great 2 place intercom built in, with standby freq monitoring). It's what I have in my Long and it works great.
@JP_Flys8 ай бұрын
Two radios is the plan. One in the GTN and one in the G3X. I like having dual comms.

If you make that front panel carbon fiber, I don't think you can use set screws....so you'll want some self retaining nuts if you go that route idk.
@JP_Flys8 ай бұрын
Definitely would be machine screws with washers and nuts or blind nuts. No self tapping screws.

Hi Justin I’m from France with an old longEz in my garage. (Mine never flight ) I purchased it last year and started making modification in the same mindset as you Describe (Carbon fiber Dashboard efis (mgl avionics) Be sure I would be happy to share pictures and experience with you if you want!

Justin, I am about finished up with 455EZ. I was in the same boat as you this spring. I recommend the COBA canard forum. Local friends with EZ experience are a great help, but sometimes I need to cast a net wider for help. I look forward to seeing you and 422N at Oshkosh! It will be 455EZs long awaited return as well!

There are only so many of these around so sometimes a more broad audience is necessary.

Why is Long EZ not more popular? I really like V shaped flying wings.

Good question. I love them and that's what counts to me!

I could help but to notice the unfinished wings. Is this your first LongEZ. It looks like you may have a background with this aircraft.

No, those belong to the museum I bought mine from.

What you gonna do with the old strobe light system? If you are going to sell or trash it, let me know, i collect different types of lighting and would love to add aircraft lights to it if possible one day. Not into leds yet love strobe light and other high voltage arctube lighting.

Do you have full controls in the back seat?

No. It will have roll and pitch control. I may put throttle control back there too but I'm undecided at the moment.

Out of curiosity, why Garmin over Dynon Skyview HDX?
@JP_Flys7 ай бұрын
There are a few extra features that the Garmin has over the Dynon.
@larrynoe61626 ай бұрын
From a pilot perspective I would rather have manual trim and speed brake. Electric gear would be okay. But build it for you.
@JP_Flys4 ай бұрын
I know it was originally designed to be a simplistic plane but, for me, I want it to be as easy as possible to operate safely. I want to be able to hit a switch and have the gear go down or the landing brake extend. That's just how I'm personalizing the plane to me. That's the great thing about the experimental world!
@Bearcat012 күн бұрын
Can someone 6’1 comfortably fly this plane?
@JP_FlysКүн бұрын
Absolutely! I'm 6'1" and I fit great. I do need to move the rudder pedals but, aside from that, no issues.

Thought I recognized that aircraft, its the same make as John Denver had before he died. Yours looks pristine, just don't do like John did and use a Vise Grip for a fuel shutoff valve handle !
@larrynoe61626 ай бұрын
The fuel selector was non-standard and behind his head. Need to learn from it or he died for nothing.

no licenc---but still so much flight -knowhow...how come ?

Solo endorsed but difficulty scheduling flights cause my CFI works for a school. Since I'm solo endorsed, I fly solo a lot with permission (obviously).
