It’s not the “jherri curl” because that was made by a different person with different chemicals but it is basically the same concept. Wave nouveau came out in the 80s along with all the other brands (Hawaiian silky, care free curls, etc etc) and has never left. But many of you were unaware because the relaxer (straight hair) became popular in the 90s and you didn’t know your grannies were using the curl. Lol. I had the curl as a child for 3 years. Great thick healthy hair. Decided to try it again (in 2022) for a low maintenance look. It’s hard to find many using it today and positive comments but so many people are trying to get curl then wear it dry and use non curl perm products then complain about damage. I just think if you commit to a curl u commit to moist hair using curl perm products. And yes that means a few nights in a plastic cap (after perming to seal in moisture) but you can transition to a silk cap. You shouldn’t be using products you used from your natural days or whatver and especially products with alcohol and other chemicals that dry out your curl. If you have a lot of damage ans shedding and you’re keeping it moisturized it might be over processed (might be your stylist). My mom had the WN 15-20 years no damage and waist length healthy hair. So it can be done. Best of luck to everyone out there trying this and all the best to everyone regardless of what path you take for your own hair journey.

I’m just confused 😐 I want to do the same treatment but there’s literally no curls. There’s hardly waves. I think it’s messed up to pay someone to do your hair just so it can look the same. I would keep researching before letting someone do this treatment again.

I had a wave nouveau put in my natural hair 5 years ago.I havent experienced any damage yet.Thank god,but my hair has grown a lot.Its the best style for hot and humid weather.I have a touch up every 4-6 months.The product is applied for 10 mins.I never had a relaxer.

I got a wave nouveau on my virgin natural hair. Because my hair was so long and heavy, it didn’t take the curl and left my hair pretty much completely straight. My ends got thin and my hair shed a lot in the beginning but it slowed. Luckily, I still have my length and I’m letting it grow out. Right now it pretty much looks like a kinky straight wig. All I can say is chemicals can be very unpredictable so be careful.

because the curly perm requires so much moisture, did having these protective styles cause more breakage? also how did your hair respond after straightening the curly perm? did it revert regularly?

I had a jheri curl many moons ago. During the soul glow era🤣🤣🤣. My hair grew like crazy but I kept a spray bottle on me so that I could spritz my hair whenever it felt dry. I never used heat on my hair & I conditioned my hair a lot. Plus, I trimmed my ends at every retouch. This style is still a lot of maintenance despite having a looser curl pattern due to the chemicals. I'm glad your hair started to grow back👏💜.
