Saw a goose get plowed by a car last summer doing this same thing. Feathers everywhere and he/she was flopping around. It was sad. If they were smart, they'd just fly over the roads. They're pretty dumb.
@arunkranchi2 ай бұрын
I don't know if the geese in my area are smarter, never found such incidence here. In case you are describing here cars would slow down or change course. I saw geese crossing road many time but first time could capture it.

Short distance they cover by walking. Taking off and landing consumes lot of energy, and thus they do to cover longer distance. Also they prefer to land in water where they can easily glide while landing.

I like that you shared this video and have compassion for the geese. However, the geese were hissing because your proximity to them and their goslings was stressing them out. It would be better if you had observed from further away, even if that meant not being able to make a video (because the video wouldn't be any good due to the distance). These animals have enough problems in their lives, trying to protect their goslings and themselves from predators, including dogs which they probably see often. Please do not add to the problems in their lives. And if you're going to feed them, please don't feed them bread. They like birdseed and it's good for them.
@arunkranchi Жыл бұрын
Sure but I could not resist seeing the goslings from proximity and capture those moments. However, I tried as much as possible to cause least problem to them. I understand your concern I would try even more to not cause any problem for them.

Such precious little darlings! Momma keeps signalling that she wants to fly, but is overcoming that desire to stick with the babies. The canada goose word for "let's fly" is flipping your head up with and pointing your bill at the sky. I wonder where the gander is? Usually when the goose shows signs of distress with a situation, the gander will come rushing in with his neck in an "s" curve and his head nearly touching the ground, hissing loudly. They are usually very protective of both the goose, and the goslings, and have been known to attack eagles, and even bears in an attempt to defend the kids. It's very unusual that he's not around, and makes me wonder if perhaps something happened to him which is causing the goose to have to go it alone.
@arunkranchi Жыл бұрын
The gander shows up later in the video. It was around. I am still mesmerized with what I could capture. Thanks for the detailed analysis. It makes it even more beautiful. Thank you!
