Three Canada Geese crossing road carefully watching traffic.

Could they be just lucky that none of the cars had to slow down or change lane? But looking carefully it seems like they entered the road only when the traffic was clear at that side, and they knew it. The traffic was not clear at the other side but then they waited till right moment when it was clear enough. It is still mystery if they knew that cars will be entering to previous lane when they are at the last lane. I think they may have observed that the cars are not coming to final lane anymore. Or, was it just a co-incidence. However, what is clear they did quite good calculation for crossing the road. But luck may be a factor also for this crossing to look nearly perfect.

Short distance they cover by walking. Taking off and landing consumes lot of energy, and thus they do to cover longer distance. Also they prefer to land in water where they can easily glide while landing.

I agree. For us humans the parents would teach us how to cross road. But seems like they know without anyone teaching.

Saw a goose get plowed by a car last summer doing this same thing. Feathers everywhere and he/she was flopping around. It was sad. If they were smart, they'd just fly over the roads. They're pretty dumb.

I don't know if the geese in my area are smarter, never found such incidence here. In case you are describing here cars would slow down or change course. I saw geese crossing road many time but first time could capture it.
