Was told we might have a possible 400 people in a reception for a funeral. But the church ladies were concerned because the lady that was dealing with the food was flying in from London the day of the funeral. Thinking I'm going to have this on hand as a backup and if we don't use it it can go to the local homeless shelter. Needed something inexpensive catering that number of people there's no way. Not 100% sure if I'm going to do it yet or not but if not I love the concept and can use it another planning

@@christamason4564 I’m glad this video helped! For that many people I’d suggest deli meat from Aldi or a similar discount store. correct, go by whatever is working for you in the kitchen, without overworking yourself with a major glut of certain crop, if not really wanted in those quantities. my usecase is different from this. we love cabbage and have ways of using it both fresh and preserved, and it grows in our frost free winter climate, when most other vegetables wont grow. gave up on kale as not as useful in our kitchen and maybe a bit overrated. pumpkins likewise grew a bounty of pumpkins one year and we had plenty of pumpkins for winter, but now i dont grow pumpkins anymore as dont have room for them to sprawl, having a more established borders garden i dont want pumpkins taking over. some people manage to make vertical structures for them but it's too much for me. cheers and thanks for vid on your experiences.

@@Chris-op7yt love hearing what works for other people! I’ve made sauerkraut this year but that’s the only use I’ve found preservation wise. Curious to hear if you store it any other way? Love that you grow frost free! Must be so nice!

@@sheenashomestead : cabbage can be used fresh in salads of various kinds besides colselaw, incorporated in various soups and stews, and then there's a whole new world of either raw or somewhat cooked cabbage of either typical cabbage or more oriental variety, for asian dishes. we're not from asia but love kimchi and the many dishes where cabbage is a substantial part of dish, such as cabbage omelete, for instance. a lot of times a regular cabbage can be exchanged for chinese cabbage, depending on dish. chinese cabbage itself is a fast grower and we use it for coleslaw or sauerkraut etc. Cauliflower and broccoli is really a type of cabbage, with different uses but similar requirements for growing.

Hey awesome video! I had lots of trouble growing onion this year, do you have any tips when it comes to growing onions and what varieties are best to grow?
@sheenashomestead2 ай бұрын
@@nashrobinson9954 Hi there! Onions did terribly this year across the nation. It was a very dry year for us in zone 6. So those conditions aren’t great for onions. The year before mine did great because we had a wet spring. So my tip is to make sure to water them consistently. I do use bulb starts. I get mine from Menards and they sell varieties that are good for my area. Do you buy bulbs or plant seeds? And what zone are you in?
@nashrobinson99542 ай бұрын
@@sheenashomestead Thats what I was thinking, live in zone 10 and the heat started early this year during spring so it must have been the heat. I used seeds and after planting them they sprouted and grew a few inches but none of them reached maturity. They didnt whither but they didnt grow much either. Looking back, I probably didnt water as much as I should have. Thanks for the tips!
@sheenashomestead2 ай бұрын
@ yes so I’d suggest both watering more when you first plant in the spring and also I have a lot more success with bulb starts. Maybe try both this next year and see which does better for you :) Truly though everyone’s onions did poorly this year so it’s not you! Let’s hope this year we get more rain!

You didn't mention it, but a real first step might be to remove anything that is NOT blackberries. You had a few mulberries, which is pretty common, but go ahead & point them out. I saw them on the pile at the end, but it was a quiet thing. I LOVE my blackberries, especially the jams!
@bonsaibean29712 ай бұрын
Great video, thank you! I've got blackberries, which were here when I bought the house. It took me years to even start to figure them out, because I never really looked it up, I just went with my general horticultural knowledge & that wasn't working! The biennial nature was the big turning point. I've pruned mine pretty close to how you did this year, so we shall see!

Loved this video. Many questions though)) How do you feel about adding some wood ash into the mix? Would you add more coffee grounds for beds where you plan to grow eggplants? I heard that tomato plants leftover make for a really good nutrient, and should be buried in the soil with chicken manure and such - do you agree? how do you feel about burying some food scraps in there as well? Finally, when do you plant garlic?)) thank you!! I subscribed, looking forward to more videos
@sheenashomestead3 ай бұрын
@@innabraude5883 hi!! You have great questions! I do not mix wood ash directly in my beds but I do put some in my compost bins from time to time. The compost bins give the ash more time to break down so it’s not as acidic. I do not use tomato plants in any of my mulching or compost because they usually carry diseases and I don’t want them to pass on those spores to next year’s plants. Food scrapes are great but I like them to break down in a compost method over time before adding them. If they don’t get the chance to break down they can grow mold or attract pests in the soil. So YES to all of those things but not directly into the soil. And last, I plant garlic in October after the first frost but before the ground gets too cold. Right now is a GREAT time to get your garlic in the ground. Thank you for all your wonderful questions! And thank you for subscribing! 💗💗💗
