nice update. Where do you get your n gauge cars from?
@NgaugeShelfLayouts10 күн бұрын
Some of then were the Oxford n gauge die cast items. The others were hand made and painted resin models that were for sale on ebay by someone but unfortunately he doesn't do them anymore it seems as I have not seen him list anything on ebay for over a year. It's a shame as his resin models were excellent quality and he did a lot of 80s and 90s model car items.

This is exactly what I'm looking for 😊 What size is the layout? And radius? As I'm new to n gauge and want to run class 66 would this work around this layout?

We celebrated our Silver anniversary this Autumn with a trip on the Bernina Panoramic Express in Switzerland/Italy. I found a Kato N scale model on eBay of the appropriate Rhätische Bahn electric engine + modern livery passenger cars as something of a memento of our travels. I bought the Kato M2 track/turn-outs set and was immediately impressed with their quality, ease of assembly, and operation. The last time I did anything with model railroading was typical HO back in the 1980s. This new Kato stuff blew me away. 😁

I used Kato to build my son a layout around 5-6 years ago, my first effort, and it's still going strong for son no. 2. I would recommend it to anyone - love the points and point switches particularly.

the brand still exists (they are dutch) although currently oct 24 they dont have a N scale 1:50 box available

Could you recommend a suitale printer for running these out at home? I assume any quality inkjet would be fine and trial various paper stocks for final matt or satin finish?
@hadynmcloughlin46615 ай бұрын
These are brilliant thanks for sharing your process, do you make your layouts with matching 'flat' ground covers and roads etc so the whole layout has a 'printed' look rather than traditional scenics?

How do fix the Kato track to the board? I know each section has two holes underneath to screw it down from under the board but getting the holes in the board accurate enough seems near impossible.

I have made many Metcalfe card kits for my N scale layout, but first time I have seen these Scalescenes kits where you have to buy your own card and print them out yourself. Not sure if I like that idea but there are a couple of kits that I like that Metcalfe don't have.

I am also impressed with the Kato products. I am looking at setting up an N gauge layout & purchased the Gaugemaster BR Industrial Freight Starter Train Set GM2000105 for about £110. In that you get the same package but with the addition of a basic small loco & 2 wagons which was great value. I have since got some extra Kato track & a second hand TOMIX JR 98363 4 car powered set. The Tomix loco does the most amazing crawl using the Kato controller & track. Note, the Kato & Tomix couplers are not compatible.

Brilliant update As for the scale scene stuff do they post or just print yourself ? Looks fantastic ATB Sion
@RaySpainPlayer11 ай бұрын
You download and print it yourself. I take the files on a USB stick to a local shop which prints them quite cheaply.

You buy the pdf file and print yourself. There are a few free kit's you can download for free to try out.

1mm card is great for the bits you want to be steong enough not to bed. Cereal card is good for medium thickness card. It's worth buying a pack of 1mm greycard to get going with.
@gordonwhitlock969710 ай бұрын
Use whatever you can get that is low cost to you. You might have access to some blocks of wood or off cuts, you might have found some thin sheets of ply in a skip, or from a parcel. Machinery shops often buy new machines that come in a ply box. Old realestate signs-they are generally made of Flute-board -waterproof and sturdy. Small sheets of MDF (medium density fibre board) are quite inexpensive from a hardware store. 3mm sheet (1/8 ") is best. Flute board and plywood generally has a texture to the surface, so that will show through paper, if you don't want the texture showing through, use printed card rather than paper-don't use a lot of glue because that softens the card. Corrugated cardboard boxes are not a good idea-they aren't made to last, they have texture and tend to go out of shape after a few months. The best card is used in the art world-backing from framed art work is thick acid free card-buy them for cheap at a second hand store. Of-course you probably know to reuse clear display windows in many products, but also consider using waterproof printer paper-that's plasticky and semi transparent-then you can print the frames on the sheet and light the inside and it will give a pleasing muted internal glow.
