Yes it is for AC sawtooth smoothing but it's also a surge protection resistor, remove it and you can almost certainly kiss your rectifier goodbye

Take a look at 4.7 ohm 1watt resistors.. I’ve seen them run for decades strapped. But it’s a stupid idea. It’s hard to fix stupid.

If I recall, some of the folks back in my early CB days had thier Johnson rigs strapped. As a young guy, I uaed to visit the "150" in Fontana. I learned a lot from Pat. Yeah "Big Strapper" that was power station, brings back memories. Had to take Dads General Radiotelephone Super MC11A radio to General Radiotelephone in Burbank Ca, as a teenager I burned up Dads MC11A not just once but three times. And was schooled by their technician as how to Strap a radio without setting it on fire. Oh thanks great videos. Jay

You can pull a known working EEPROM and send it off to have copies made, as well as, they will send you a copy of the EEPROM file for future reference and use in making future chips if necessary. I found a guy on the common auction site for my own Motorola EEPROMs. 73’ Amen!

I keep looking for a CPI with a dead EPROM so I can try a few things. I thought I had one, but it turned out to be one of the chips that makes up the -8 V circuit had failed. Replaced that and the radio works just fine. And I'm not going to risk blowing up a working CPI. Enough people have done that already.

As mentioned in the video only if I have the radio in front of me or lots of pictures of the smo board and even then I'm hesitant as I don't want to cause any further damage. I can't give you a code not knowing which version you have and all the mods that have been done which absolutely affect the way the truth chart is created.

I worked for a friend’s radio shop when these were being produced. Great SSB radio, not so much on AM. There were so few of these produced they never achieved the updates needed to reach optimal performance with some functions. Some of the competitors produced good AM/SSB dual conversion radios with separate ceramic AM filters. They produced well over 40,000 units and made updates along the production where needed. Too bad this company was not around long enough to perfect everything. And if that Eprom takes a dump you have a nice doorstop.
@s9radioАй бұрын
Hello Ron, we've chatted before in the of the CB groups. CPI much like Dak were a little late getting into the game as the big CB boom of the 70's was pretty much over, otherwise I think CPI would have set the BAR regarding performance. PS-I get wonderful AM reports on both the early & late model CPi's with the easily adjustable carrier dialed back using the stock CPI/TURNER mic to the point that locals always ask what radio I'm on because it sounds so different. I have one here for service right now with a dead eeprom, it's now a one channel radio hardwired for channel-38 and if it was mine, I'd wire up a small microprocessor to sort the logic gates out. EZ peasy but too expensive for the client. 73-Gregg s9radio
@ronedwards8239Ай бұрын
Very possible. These radio’s still have a place, mostly with the individual that can repair them. The asking prices are silly, especially with the horrible condition I see them in. I personally never liked the white cases and knobs. Remember, it seemed like everyone smoked back then, Ratchet jawing on the 11 meter band, chain smoking with a radio next to the ashtray. I run a completely rebuilt D201A with NOS boards I installed. Carrier Control unit, updated BA board & DDS in place of that drifty air capacitor. I would pick a CPI if I parted with my Tram.

It's great I stumbled upon this channel. I just love my Super Sidekick. Always get good audio report anywhere else in the world. And with only 20 watts of power output, may only have S2, S5 on the other end but always a Q5. But I do have questions though. My first SSK I got mid 80's. Repainted to metellic silver from the previous owner. Still got the chrome plated head. And last 2023, a good friend of mine gave me his SSK as a present in true stock form. It has different name plate. My first one got TURNER and the other got Turner. Which is older? But here's the catch. I opened both to see the inside and there's a big difference. The one from my friend is exactly the same on what showed in this video, but my first one, first, looks like the Relay/Electronic switch has been taken off and it has an 8 pin audio IC instead of the 4 pin. I've done some research but to no avail and I'm dyin' to find some answers. To end it up, both has booming audio makin' me loud and clear. Appreciate it very much and have a good one.

Yes, there were some early Super Sidekicks like the SSK-100 and I believe there was another as well. Love to see some pics if you still have the mics? 73-Gregg s9radio
