Very helpful explanation! My only question is how often do you back up your catalog and to where? The same external drive, your macbook's HD, etc? I am nervous to have so much on 1 external drive but I need to keep space free on my mac as well lol.
@dreamlifephotography6 күн бұрын
Lightroom prompts a "catalog" backup every fortnight and that will back up to where ever you have set up the catalogs to be saved to. What I do is every time I need a new external hard drive I buy two. One is the main one I work off and the other I use to make a copy of not only the catalogs but more importantly all the RAW photos that I take. I hardly saved anything at all to my Mac's internal harddrive

I might consider buying a used lens from a friend but I simply don’t buy used lenses from strangers. Don’t want dealing with some nasty fungus. Could end up with a lens where the previous owner removed only the most obvious amount for a quick sale.

Ebay is fine for used Lens. Always check if can return. If it’s defective or fungus and seller has not disclosed then you can send them back. Pays to be vigilant and look at all the photos and read the description carefully. Saves a small fortune on buying new.

I have sold a few cameras on ebay, but never bought anything. I jad a friend get scammed. He ordered a camera and it wasn't in the box, just weights. The seller had pictures of the camera in the box, proof of shipping and proof of delivery. He had a heck of a time trying to get his money back.

Also, Look up serial number range for the particular lens before going to check it out, numbers that fall outside that range on the lens are likely "Gray Market" and have less resale value, despite being a good lens.

@alansach843710 күн бұрын
Might allow you to renegotiate the price with a private seller, but most retailers (like B&H) don't differentiate between US and gray market once the lens is used, since the only real difference is whether or not the new lens is covered by factory warranty. Obviously, used lenses are not.
@mvp_kryptonite10 күн бұрын
Iv only had to return one lens as it was a different model to what was listed. I would add to this and some comments that if you use eBay, I only purchase from sellers who have 100% rating and who are responsive to answering questions in a descriptive manner

Great tips that I will use when I buy a used lens! The only thing I want to say is that the shake test can be counterproductive if the lens has internal stabilization because if it is not powered it can give the feeling of some broken/loose component. So always better to check if it is present or not before getting alarmed. Anyway great guide!

Have been buying second hand online, both camera bodies and lenses, for way more years than I'll admit. Only had one out of over 20 I had to return. A Nikon AF-S 13 - 55 mm that should have never been listed as 'very good' condition - the zoom portion was loose and that should have been caught by the seller. Anything listed by a decent dealer will have been checked over thoroughly. Watch out for others.
@dreamlifephotography11 күн бұрын
This is a great strike rate then. Yeah I find with secondhand lenses most of the time you we be okay. Camera bodies can be way more risky but there is less to go wrong with the lenses. So its great to know from your experience that it works in your favour nearly every time... thanks so much for the input

Whats the best lens for photographing surfers
@dreamlifephotography14 күн бұрын
Hey Timothy thanks for your question, that really depends on a lot of factors. Like if you are shooting from the water or the land. From the beach obviously you need a fairly good telephoto lens. The 100-400mm lens range is a good starting point, the zoom factor allows you to pull back for lineup shots or to get scenes with great backdrops but also get tight action if the waves aren't too far out. If there is a fair distance then the bigger 600mm lenses are more preferable, but it does come down to your tastes in a good surf photo, personally I like the more pulled back look, so I am often using lenses up to 400mm more than beyond it. If in the water my favourite two lenses are the 15mm ultra wide lens for close up action and the 50mm to position yourself a little further back.... hope this helps, with more information I can probably get more specific

I'm using the cloud version of Lightroom -- I haven't downloaded it to my computer because my old iMac can't run it -- and have had trouble downloading high resolution versions of my edited photos. A 14MB picture goes into Lightroom for editing and the version I download is 1.5 MB. I don't have a "file" button to click on, which is the first step in your video. So what now? Any help appreciated.
@dreamlifephotography18 күн бұрын
I only use the "Lightroom Classic" version where there are no limitations. So I can't say for sure if the free version has or has not got the file saving options... I'm guessing it doesn't from what you have said. If not can you save it as a TIFF file? if you can this will be uncompressed and should be a super large and high quality file

@dreamlifephotography24 күн бұрын
So when using the 50mm lens I am definitely using AUTO focus, especially in the water because there is no way of manually focusing inside my water housing, and auto focus works really well. I take all my pictures as still photos using my Canon R5 camera inside a Aquatech housing.... the video you see is from a separate GoPro camera that is mounted on top of my water housing

I want to do the opposite; get a full round sun in my image with no flare, solar filters expose only the sun but I want landscape as well, any ideas?
@dreamlifephotographyАй бұрын
So you want a picture that is exposed for the bright sun but still get detail in the landscape? if this is so then its really tough because your camera has to choose one or the other. If you expose for the landscape which is much darker then the sun will be blown out and if you expose for the bright sun then the foreground landscape will be pretty much black. So you could consider doing a composite image or sometimes fill the foreground with high powered flash and exposing for the bright sun for the ambient light could be another way around it, but this more so works for portraits or close subjects than big landscapes. But yes that is a challenging image to take

30 years in the design industry, I could never do ransomware. So I abandoned Adobe some 5 years ago after the paid software stopped working. I have not missed Adobe apart from two key things. Batch processing raw files. Digital Asset Management. ACDSee does both so I got on board. Its almost good as a DAM. Its reaches across my network and shows me the 35,000 images from the NAS drive, the two mac servers and local drives. Yay! It also has some staggeringly weird oddities to do with how its filters work that leaves me scratching my head but at the moment it has proven to be better than Peakto and better than the finder. Have yet to batch process raw files but expecting it to be nicer than Darktable.

Hey Tom, I've just bought a D850 and Aquatech housing... I've got a Tokina 17-35 F4 (which I'll use set to 17mm) in a 6 inch dome which came with the housing. The 12 inch dome is a dream purchase! I have a 30+ year background in Underwater photography but most of this goes back to film days... and my only Digital underwater camera previously was an Olympus 5050 and a GoPro7. I am yet to take the d850 underwater so I am watching as many of your videos as possible to get a feel for what I need todo to prepare for the best settings, etc. This is where I want to ask a simple question - I regard myself as a Professional (Paid) photographer but its always a learning curve with a new camera, and a new huge housing. I intend to scuba dive the Wollongbar wreck here where I live in Byron Bay. It's an incredible wreck dive, very close to shore, you've probably dived it??... Any way, my question is... on Video mode do you shoot a pre-set Kelvin WB or on Auto WB? I guess it comes down to the depth of the water and so many other variables, but I thought i'd ask you in case you set your camera to one pre-set Kelvin (Im guessing maybe around 4,500K) and go from there with additional WB adjustment in the edit suite?? I can see you've rigged up a strobe with your housing so I hope to also do that soon too... just not sure if I need it to be a dedicated Nikon strobe or if I can use a specific amphibious strobe such as an Ikelite or Sea & Sea, but I guess I'll work this out once I have mastered the ambient light technique. I've used the GoPro7 with UR Pro filter and over the years with the 5050 I also used a UR Pro over my 100 degree add-on wide lens for natural light, but 5mp's just doesn't cut it any more, but I did get some awesome shots with this set up. I have attached a link to a selection of shots taken with the 5050 and twin strobes from 20 years ago in the Solomon Islands, in case you're interested... Diving was my life for 30 years. All the best, and thank you for your advice. Dave Bryant. www.flickr.com/photos/seapicsdavebryant/albums/72157631522472588/
@dreamlifephotography2 ай бұрын
I have just replied to your email, but thought I would paste the response here as well: Hey Dave Thanks so much for your message. So firstly, when I shoot video, I am in preset or manual White Balance. The reason for this is that while the video is going it can potentially change colour temperature during the clip and this is almost impossible to edit out. You don't want the clip to change colour during filming it makes the editing process a nightmare. WB is not as much a problem when shooting still photos especially in RAW format. So when doing stills feel free to be in AUTO WB. So set your manual WB in the degree Kelvin to what looks most natural. That depends on the light on the day and even what the light is bouncing off down there. The colour balance can then be corrected in post production, but its best to get it as close when you are shooting it with video. Aquatech have just released some strobes that will suit your style of work perfectly. They have also released some constant light setups that would be good for both video and still photography. Not sure they are available in Australia yet, but will be soon: KZbin on the new Aquatech strobes here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mHPGYqSBqK2mfs0 AND The KZbin on the new constant lights is here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rn28gnx3ntOAjdk Currently I am using the older flash housing for my Canon 600ex speelight, but that don't make that model anymore. BTW if you need anything from Aquatech use my code which is TOMW to get an extra 5% off Also how deep are you going with scuba? Generally the Aquatech is designed more for surface work at the moment, down to about 10m rating, but I know crew who do take them much deeper. These housing are different to dive housing. I have a starter course that is only $27 that sets some solid foundations for success with your new housing. It can follow on to a more comprehensive course, but I will leave the link below for you to check out. www.waterphotographycourses.com/water-surf-photographer-essentials-course-organic Let me know if you have any more questions Tom
