If you read the rules carefully Gary Gygax recommended rerolling characters with less than two 15's as most people get their character killed on purpose if the stats are really bad.
@RPGGamerКүн бұрын
Wish I'd know that back in my 2e days, as my Character had a single stat of 15. When the DM later decided to go over to points buy for new characters, he allowed me to boost my character up to the new level of 80 points. My warrior was 69, the other warriors were 90+.

The rules are hard, but keeping the game balanced is. There's just certain combinations which overpower the game (one of my group still wants to play his custom built Atlantean Dragon Juicer, and will go on at length about how it basically breaks the system). I love Rifts, but I'd love it a lot more if I felt that I wasn't going to have to ban my players from using 50% of the stuff published as I just can't rely on it not to be crazy.

@Se7enBeatleofDoom2 күн бұрын
The randomness of character creation adds emotional attachment while role-playing because you work what is given to you instead of what you asked for and it connects to the game's roots in the deadliness of war gaming.
@RPGGamerКүн бұрын
I can see that point, but having played a character who rolled lousy, it just meant I was the worse. I was one of three Warriors, one with 18/00 Strength, one with 18/75, and me with 15. The other characters also had every single other stat higher. So they were more efficient in combat than me, so every magic weapon that appeared went to them as it was more effective in their hands, so I eventually got hand me downs. Keeping them on their feet was more important so they got the best armour and rings of protection. All of which just made my character less and less part of the game. Eventually the DM decided that he'd move over to points buy for new characters, and everyone with less than 80 points could increase theirs. Mine had 69, so got much better. The other 2 fighters already had 90+ so didn't (I also got a Belt of Giant Strength, so that levelled the playing field nicely).

One of the things I do find amusing is that D&D has always evolved during editions. So as you say Oriental Adventures added to the game, and for 2e there was the Skills and Powers update. But we still all talk about each edition as if it was a single thing.

One of the great things about T&T combat is that the right weapon is a function of your strength and dexterity. As a result each character will often be found carrying a different weapon. Contrast this to AD&D of the era when fighters would mostly have swords, clerics, maces, etc.

The two systems that were most similar (unplagerised) around this time were RTalsorian's (Cyberpunk/Mekton II Roadstriker) and Megatraveler. Both were d10 based with task based difficulty checks on skills. Both were deadly enough in combat that you really wanted to avoid a fight encouraging a more sensible approach to conflict. I'd met Mike Pondsmith during his initial marketing of Mekton (terrible game but Mike is a salesman) at a con in Oakland some years before. Mekton was a large box game that consisted of a fragile paperboard wrapper and a styrofoam block surrounding a sparse rules booklet and paper maps. He went on to do Teenagers from Outerspace which was a fun Anime Highshool themed take on RPGs. However some highschool friends of mine were publishing an affiliated supplement to Cyberpunk years later. So I bought it and everything (Mekton II, Roadstriker, etc) on the spot. I think I only ran a session or three of Cyberpunk before introducing players to RuneQuest (Chaosium's version), Champions, and Heroquest.

An older video, but I was commenting on the sheer number of people that commented that I was an idiot who just didn't like the game, instead of allowing me to just have a different opinion. I love Rifts, played it a few times and had a whole load of fun. But it doesn't make the GM's job easy, and I still believe an update would fix that, and I believe from what I've been told the anniversary edition does that to some degree. And over the years since I did this video, I've had a bunch of people coming forward to agree with me. Only last week I had someone say they loved Rifts, but would never GM it again because their players just destroyed them with multiple Glitter Boys and Juicers in the party. And it's not like he was a newbie to Gamesmastering, saying he'd a decades worth of experience gm'ing World of Darkness and D&D.

That initiative system is really unique. It really matters to have a good initiative!
@RPGGamer8 күн бұрын
It's really over the top important in C&D, I think if they'd turned it round, so everyone got to go in descending order, but high initiative people got to keep on going afterwards. So every players gets to get involved straight away, rather than just sitting and waiting for everyone to go first. Doesn't solve all the problems, but at least allows all players to get involved from the start.

13:00 the PAN was already a thing in SR4. 23:20 Not sure about SR5, but in SR4 it was fairly easy to secure a PAN: Use Skinlink, which instead of Wifi uses the natural conductivity of the user's skin to transmit signals. Or - if so desired - mimick the contact-areas of older editions. Edit: The more nefarious variant of securing a PAN would be to install some Black IC on your device. If a hacker happens to enter, they are getting a very warm welcome.
@RPGGamer8 күн бұрын
I'd kind of remembered that when recording, but my GM didn't bother with any matrix stuff in our 4e campaign, so I wasn't sure. The skinlink I think can be hacked if you've got an active comlink on your PAN, so be used as a point of access.

2300 AD always gave me this depressing sadness of seeing the result of a bunch of experienced game designers, excitedly wanting to offer a setting full of gritty sci-fi adventures in space, but just cr*pping out the exact same wars and politics that they knew about in their own life in the 1980's instead. They just plastered to Ronald Regan universe over a science fiction setting, and called it "realistic". Page 56 is dedicated to the cars sitting out in their parking lot! And who thought it wasn't a waste of paper to dedicate pages 62 and 63 to a refresher on European Colonialism? I'm grateful for it as a Traveller resource however. It offers some nice scraps of material for an actual, "realistic", solar-centric, and SUB-light speed interstellar (Alpha Centauri and Barnard's only) setting, without the rubber suit 'aliens' and absurd fake gravity installed under all the ship floors.
