I think there’s a classic model of a Wargamer - who paints armies - plays in a club etc - not as thoughtful as active. I’d say look for the odd shortcut; supplement painting with figures you buy painted (heresy to some) and decide what your priorities are - doing all you do extensively would be hard and demanding on time. If I had one further point of advice it’s to glam up some of the terrain features - roads and rivers especially. The rules testing is a great strength.

Their history, unit organization and relative performance/ reputation on the battlefield etc. I’m currently building a Spanish army of 1808 vintage and the French VI corps Italian divisions to oppose them, but thinking of the 1813 campaign next and maybe starting with a mixed Prussian/Russian force (or maybe swap the Russians for Swedes…but just don’t want to deal with Bernadotte!).

🙂 Great video, although I would have also looked from 28mm to 15mm - Epic Battles: Waterloo is a great system and allows for truly "epicaly large" battles. 😀With the average Napoleonic "starter army" being a large Warhammer army, I consider 15mm way easier, cheaper - and faster to paint! - than 28mm.

I really enjoy Black Powder. I have tried a lot of other sets, but if I am being honest, I find Black Powder to be the fast for large battles, which I enjoy, and gives very good results. Its just, well, fun. Valor and Fortitude look very good. For armies, the Perry army deals are such an amazing deal for a starter army. Its a lot of miniatures at once, but honestly, outside of skirmish games, Napoleonic's are sort of a hobby which is suited towards massive battles, in my opinion.

I think a good introduction to historical or simple games is "Sharp Practice" by TooFatLardies. You only need between 40 and 50 miniatures per side (or less) and not as many as with Black Powder. So one or two unit boxes, for comparison, the starter armies from Black Powder have around 100-120 miniatures. Which I personally find to be too much to "quickly" put together and maybe just paint to try something new. ((and another point for ME, if I want to try out a new game or setting, I stay at around €100-max €150 for two players)) What I like about the game, apart from the size, is that it's basically a game about the leaders of armies or units. You don't activate a unit of line infantry, but its sergeant and he gives the unit an order. Higher ranks outrank lower NCOs or officers, so for example my lieutenant can command two sergeants and order him to move his unit or open fire. The rulebook is available free online, and you can buy a hardback book directly from TooFatLardies, whose website also has extended army lists. The rulebook contains all the "important" armies and wars from the French-Indian War in 1754 to the Indian Mutiny in 1857.

@lordtiali8572
@lordtiali8572 Ай бұрын
@@totalburnout5424 yes, depending on the setting, you can call it skirmish :) Personally, I would call games like "Shakos & Bayonets" skirmish, and I see Sharps Practice as something in between, especially if you increase the number of units For large, massive battles, definitely Black Powder or "Kugelhagel" by Martin Fellar (although I only really like it because of the hidden deployment and "fake units") Sharps Practice is more fun if you adapt it to the units, so more Chasseur and Fusiliers, a few line infantry. So "bigger" Skirmish Battle, vanguard or rearguard battle before the large armies meet, or to cover the retreat (so yes call it Skirmish Game :) ) or one small Side of an Battlefield I mostly play French and Indian War or American War of Independence, where the division into the three game styles fits better than in the Napoleon era. Attacks on small settlements, Indian raids, etc. But I would definitely advise against Black Powder as an introduction, unless you field 5 miniatures and then say that's a regiment with 24+ miniatures or use some markers. I know a few people who were keen on the game, bought a starter army and then simply failed because of the sheer number of models that were in the box and thought that it wasn't actually enough. The costs and material expenditure are so much higher, and in 28mm I find a 6x4 table almost too small. I associate the Napoleon era with cavalry, large flank movements and there's hardly enough space for that. especially when you consider that Waterloo is considered a relatively small front with "only" just under 4km I currently have Black Powder Epic on my wish list, I think the game will be different in ~15mm... maybe at some point... when the Pile of Shame has been dealt with... or Russia comes as a nation :D
@totalburnout5424
@totalburnout5424 Ай бұрын
@@lordtiali8572 Yes, I see the problems too. I played BP in 28mm myself, but never built an army. So why my recommendation? For the first time TFL games are not for beginners. Those who come from GW have difficulty with some mechanisms. I really like their systems. BP has structural similarities to GW games, a lower hurdle. There are starter armies and I know of more BP players than players of other Napoleonic games. Active players. Often they then switch from there - because of the problems - to other systems. That's why you'll find teammates with it more quickly, I think. Currently Sharps is the only 28mm game I'm actively planning on playing. Maybe Rebels & Patriots. So if you have some experience, go for Sharps. 👌

And there you talk about exactly these topics, starting slowly, using cardboard markers rather than buying 100 miniatures. So sorry if it sounded too much like criticism. Black Powder is without question a good game. But I've had exactly the oposide experience and it's extremely difficult to motivate new people to play the game, even if I could provide all the figures for 2-4 players. And larger skirmishers are easier at the beginning because everything is more manageable and you can then expand from there.

For example, stating that Napoleon was forced to resign by the French for losing most of his army in Russia! It’s not so much an anti-hero as almost a counter-factual dimension one is in. So, it’s like a romantic flick which o.c is focused on the theme of hopeless love! The war and politics kind of running aslant the idea of a man who doomed his own love affair. Thanks for showing us the gameplay. I think doing a series would be a great idea, though at your convenience. Keep it up, my friend!

Thx for watching, Josh. I will definitely finish it, regardless of the video for YT. Maybe I'll try filming a little less. Only used heavy cut scenes anyway.

The dragoons look excellent as do the generals. It’s nice to see that I am not alone in running several projects at the same time😊. I must confess I have had to take a break from painting Epic pike and shot for my ECW project. My last effort of painting 14 guns and crews just pushed me over the edge. The ACW look good too. I hope you are not going to be tempted by the Epic Hail Caesar range🤣 Sorry to hear of the drop in subscriptions, no doubt they will increase over time.

Thx. "Hail Caesar" Epics look great... but they are over shadowed by an older 10mm Magister Militum army. I will oeobably revive it in the future but not Substitution them. 14 guns is hard work. I'm a slow painter and mass painting is not my case. In the early years I painted my WFB armies figure for figure. This can stretch a project out forever, which isn't necessarily a good thing.

Nice little update! You'll get back over 700 subs soon enough. I hate that it fluctuates, but you're doing good work and the subs will follow. Well done, my friend!

Thanks. They were back briefly at 700 this morning and then gone again at lunchtime. 😄 Not without a certain humor. 😉

@@totalburnout5424 yeah, I know the feeling. Most likely bot accounts, but that's okay. You'll get real subs and you'll get back up to and over 700. It's inevitable.

Everything is ok and we have a weekend to enjoy. (Although Friday is already over here.)
