Hello. I am currently a nurse as well. I am in a RN to MSN track, and I am required to earn my BSN first before proceeding to the MSN in Nursing Informatics. I am questioning if I should proceed or not. I know you have a MS in Health Informatics. My question is did you get your informatics role prior to the Health Informatics degree, and do you feel that you benefited from the Health Informatics degree. Do you think an Informatics degree is necessary. I have heard mixed reviews on this from different nurses. I want to know your take.
@_mshsrn16 күн бұрын
Hey! So I have my Masters in Health Sciences with a concentration in Informatics. Two opportunities of interest (informatics related) came my way shortly after I finished my degree. But this was also when I started to really tailor my resume in a concerted effort for those two roles. I had some volunteer experience on system implementation at a prior job and then some non-beside experience in a clinic. I do think that the timing of making a much better resume and the new degree added to my resume helped. But….overall, my experience probably spoke more for itself. The degree was worth it specifically for me, because I learned the knowledge to understand what I wanted to do in health informatics as a nurse… so I could make my resume reflect just that.

Pretty average review. You need something to back up your opinions instead of saying " I feel". Had the mesh ripped or the zipper broke, sure.

@Brienna Let me clear up the misinformation stated in this video. I am a Registered Health Information Administrator with over 30 years of experience in the health information management industry. To obtain the certification for RHIA, you must have a bachelor's degree in Health Information Management from an accredited college or university that offers the Health Information Management Program. Likewise, for an RHIT certification, you must have an associate's degree from a two-year college or university that offers the Health Information Technology Program. Both examinations are offered through AHIMA (American Health Information Management Association). A degree in Health Informatics is not the requirement to sit for the RHIA examination with AHIMA.

Start early! Figure out what you like about informatics or health IT space first. Hardware? Software? Just leadership? Data collection or analysis? Electronic healthcare system building? Whether you do know or don’t know, you can probably think about a health informatics certification at a university. It might be a good introductory with less educational requirements for entry.

Hello! I want to start off by saying thank you for making this video because I was thinking about getting a masters in health informatics. Currently, I have my bachelors in health science but I found out recently that I don’t enjoy clinical work as much as I hoped I would and wanted to veer towards something more health/tech/management related instead. What specializations are in health informatics? I saw stuff online related to pharmacy informatics, nursing informatics, and general health informatics, but I was wondering if there was health informatics for each health related field? Such as optometry, dentistry, dermatology, etc.? I don’t know if that makes sense but I’m also really trying to figure out what specializations exist within the health informatics field. I really appreciate any feedback/advice! Thank you ❤
@_mshsrn5 ай бұрын
Hey Lilly! Yeah so a Masters in Health Informatics degree would generally cover all healthcare disciplines. For example, if a dentist got a health informatics degree…he/she could influence the world of informatics within dentistry. So the word dental informatics could be used “loosely” or “officially”. But there isn’t really a “Dental Informatics” degree per se. So with your background (Bachelors in Health Sciences), it would be good to get clear on if you think you might want to more hard science technical (database/cybersecurity/user interface and design) or managerial/leadership or more data analysis/processes/workflows…. Asking for a university’s core curriculum courses for informatics degrees, including descriptions of the classes, might be a good starting point for getting feel for what u lean towards most. Also, programs are not all made equal
@_mshsrn5 ай бұрын
Actually from a quick google I saw somewhere offering a graduate certificate in dental informatics…! So there’s that :)
@malcolmjelani35886 ай бұрын
The logic is even simpler than that. If there is a shortage of nurses and the shortage is more severe now than when you made this video, then it would stand to reason that there's going to be a shortage of healthcare informatics. Right now WGU is super low cost so I'm eyeing it.

I’ve been a nurse for over 10 years now and still, I haven’t found anything in nursing that I enjoy or can at least get some fulfillment out of. NI and Data Analytics interests me a lot though. Wow. You sound like my exact scenario 🥹😅 … Ive always seen myself in the business of healthcare but not exactly where. So I think understanding the things that I’m really good at /the transferable skills that I actually enjoy doing/ and overall goal (which is my own business) is what draws me towards HIT (health information technology). I’m not convinced on being an expert in that field… but I am convinced about not working against who I am. Which is why it’s unfortunate a lot of us who start in nursing have a hard time in transition… because we prob googled some stuff online and got some typical nurse specialty suggestions. I’m going to do some video reviews on some of the quizzes. Let me know if you think the quizzes should’ve had other types of questions or things for consideration!

@@_mshsrnHmmm how do I say this nicely? I believe we all gotta work hand in hand, however, as a new RN of only 7 years, I'm appalled at the bullsh!tification of nursing. There's very limited direct patient care, and my day is bogged down with clerical nonsense and computer clicking that creates unnecessary time crunches. The future of nursing should be back to the bedside. That said I think informatics should be there to make the direct patient care easier; but I don't find this to be the case. I would like to enter an informatics training program that speaks to my values as a nurse, but let's please all remember, how important direct patient care is. I often laugh to myself when I see a nurse who's been a nurse for one year, run to do informatics. Especially since I've been told by management that informatics is saturated. What she says @15:49 👍🏾
@_mshsrn6 ай бұрын
Yea, I love this. You’re right. Nursing Informatics is a space where nurses with a significant number of years of experience at the bedside is needed. Someone with at least a quality amount of experience where they would consider themselves at least a “subject matter expert” in the clinical space that they are looking to create influence in through technology. As someone who really wanted to be “in the business of healthcare” ….Aaand not necessarily was convinced to be a nurse, I hope that maybe I can speak to an audience of people who chose nursing and feel it’s the wrong profession for them and might be considering something more innovative (healthcare informatics) or! Nurses with a number of years of clinical experience considering Nursing Informatics or Healthcare Informatics or! Someone like you- who sees first hand why nurses NEED to be in this space (what she says at 15:49)

Hi Dr. Stacy, please accept my super delayed response! Would a cert be better than a masters? I really think it’s kind of relative. For cybersecurity, I imagine a degree or very specific training would be needed beyond an informatics cert or masters. Highly technical? But in general a masters or cert in nursing informatics/health care informatics may open newer opportunities outside of direct patient care. And I identify with you 100%, let’s live the soft life Lol

From my experience Nurses do not do well in health informatics they don't understand the data and are poor at building, more and more companies are hiring people with IT background then clinical background.
