My dental degree cost me about $18k ... Paid the absolute minimum debt repayment and couldn't help but pay it off in 5 or 6 years. Shame it's not still like that ...

I graduated with a DDS in 1987. One day in year 4 during clinic I over heard 2 Professors talking. Dr. Reese said to Dr. Culpepper that the students did not know what they were getting themselves into…….. That my dear friends should tell you everything you need to know about the Profession of Dentistry…. Rewarding but very very challenging and DIFFICULT.

OMG, you are so right! 26 years of practice including Public Health, Community Health, Employee Dentist , solo private practice and even practicing in a Forward Surgical Team for the US Army in Afghanistan. But, I had a freaking Temp Crown come off on the daughter in law of a tribal elder here and it cost me a full time job. But they're keeping me on as a Locum so I'll gladly take their money. I tell our staff that nobody gives a shit about what we do until we don't do it. I'm 59 and retiring in 2 years. You're awesome and please keep it up. Much love and peace from Arctic Alaska.

Theres no way insurance is paying 100% of a crown in Wisconsin and that you get $1600 a crown. Thats impossible., The Colorado description is accurate,. No well run practice asks you to recruit patients. Every time a doctor moves they lose their entire patient and referral base. It's ridiculous to location hop if you want to be asuccessful dentst. Dr. Wendy, My name is Chayse and I am a senior at a small private University I also play D2 for them. Ever since I was 3 years old and my mother took me to the dentist for the first time I have been interested in teeth, to the point that my Dentist had to keep asking me to step back because I was getting in the road. I was a Bio major my freshman year but because of my university's financial issues they cut the major so starting my sophomore year I had to switch to exercise Science as that is what they told me would be the closest to my current major and still very well accepted into graduate schools. I have a 2.9-3.0 cum gpa and hopefully will be 3.2 or higher after this last semester. I still have to take micro bio and organic chem as I can not fit it in my schedule this semester so after I graduate this May I will have to go back part time. I still need to take my Dat as well probably next spring. My goal is WVU dental school as its the closest to me. My parents support me as they know I truly want to do the work but are worried about me not getting in as I'm not the best standardized test taker as well as struggling in chemistry and high level math. So honestly do you think someone in my shoes has a chance of getting into Dental school or should I start looking into other careers? Thank you.

I’m a dentist in Chicago. Dr Wendy hit the mark on all her points. I do want to add though, I have changed my mindset around most of these difficult patients….I look at them as a challenge that I will win. I always hope to change their neg views of dentistry to positive ones. I can and does happen sometimes. Keep up good work Dr Wendy
