Excelent!!!! I fixed my 1991's Marantz CD40 right now. It took me bring the replacement from Amazon to Uruguay 3 weeks, but the wheel was desintegrating. The rest of the player is working 10 points, even the belts!!! Thanks a lot for having made this tutorial!!! Exelente tutorial, me permitió cambiar el engranaje de mi Marantz CD40 de 1991. Es un equipo excelente calidad que con los años apenas presenta esta falla que puede solucionarse con poco dinero y esfuerzo.

Watching and interested to have a go at this myself sometime for the first time. Is that gramophone a double spring? Does that new spring come cable tied, so it can be removed inside the gramophone itself !! ? Last question……… Do you know if that company on that parts sheet are still in business or can you recommend somewhere that supplies a new spring. I hope you reply 🙂 Thank you

Hello, this gramophone is a double spring model. The new springs come cable tied with heavy duty ties. My replacement spring had 3 ties. Some people have commented on the approach of fitting the springs into the drum with the ties attached. This in my opinion is nonsense for a couple of reasons. The springs come pre-wound tight, but mine would not go into the drum as they are not wound tightly enough to fit into the drum. Secondly, assuming you can get the springs into the drum, as you cut the ties the springs would expand into the drum trapping the ties against the wall of the drum. I believe It would not be possible to remove the ties at this point. I see how people might think this would work, however, I haven't seen it done this way myself. The best place for gramophone springs is the internet or eBay. There are not many sellers left these days. It may be that once you get the old one(s) out you might be able to repair it or just refit depending on what caused the failure. I hope this helps and good luck. Thank you for your comment.

@@dembydish ok Thanks I’ve not ever worked on any gramophone in any way, apart from using different ones to upload to my KZbin channel. The spring in my HMV 130 is of course a double spring, it has been replaced once with a reconditioned one. I only want to buy another double as a future spare. The other gramophone in question that I want to try to replace a spring is a HMV 112. Is that a single or double do you know ? What you say about the cable ties and spring instalment now yes makes sense, thanks. But I hope to have a go at this spring replacement in the future, when I build a shed to work in and soon. I’m in my late 60s and don’t want senility to set-in before I try repairing the gramophone 🙂🙂

Yes, the wide blade is the neutral. This is the left blade as viewed from the lead side of the plug, with the ground pin down. It should also be noted that the neutral should have a plastic rib on the lead, sometimes multiple ribs on the neutral.

@@dembydish That's great. United Utilities regs are different for my area in the NW, they recommend 100mm ducting, whereas I think you used 55mm. I bought 110mm Twinwall ducting and for the end caps I bought Multikwik Drain & Waste Adaptor MKUAB 2283. There are different brands that make exactly the same thing and even some in B&Q but basically its a rubber soil waste reducer cap which I can cut a cross section to feed the mains 25mm MDPE pipe snugly through. I got my caps of ebay, £10 for a pack of 2.

One very efficient solvent for oil is naphtha. I am not sure how it compares with paraffin but I have used it for removing old dried up lubricant from photographic shutters and it lifts it all up and cleans perfectly. It is also generally used for removing adhesive (e.g. leather glue) and lifting stains from clothing and carpets. It is a very volatile solvent, a bit of it spilt on your hands will evaporate in 1/2 minute or so with no discernible trace left behind. Also, it doesn’t leave much of a smell since it evaporates so easily. Given its volatile nature though, I wouldn’t put it in an open container, as it would just evaporate off quickly. One would need to fill a sealable container with naphtha, dip the stone(s) in it and then seal the container up with its cover. This would leave the naphtha in there to do its thing. That would be something I would try, given the good removal results I’ve had with oil/lubricant. Thanks for this informative video.

There also seems to be further disassembly that is possible but I went with "fishing the belt" method. Oppo support still responds to emails and sent two belts for $5+ Good Luck!

I remember watching my grandfather, about 60 years ago, soaking his stone in petrol for a couple of days. After he took it out, he set light to it and let all the petrol and dissolved oil burn off. He would then reface it on a thick glass sheet using some sort of fine sand. He came from along line of cabinet makers and his tools were always razor sharp. I have never tried his method but have had good results soaking in caustic soda for a few days, followed with a good long soak in a degreaser [I use [Elbow Grease brand]. I level the stone on 4" wide emery belt stuck onto a 3 foot long granite strip with double sided tape. Works a treat, and even if the stone has always been used with oil, I can usually use with water after this treatment. Some [not all] stones, just seem to work better with water. Forgot to say, I use the Elbow Grease sprayed onto the emery to act as a lubricant as I level out the stone.

Tool steel has changed over the years. The tools your grandfather had weren't alloy tool steel. His tools just weren't as hard as tools are now. So the stones he used aren't as effective with modern tools either.

NEVER cut the zip ties 👔 from the spring before inserting it into the barrel. Doing so can cause serious injury. If the spring, however does need to be unwound before being inserted into the barrel, do so with heavy hand, eye, and body protection. The heavy cloth looked like 👍 a great idea 💡. Thanks for your video. I was wondering as I have one of these why you chose to replace the precision capacitors. I replaced the 2 electrolytics in it, 8uf 525V and the 4uf 250V but am not really tempted to replace the others since they are not electrolytic and the use of this device is unknown. I like to go along and test devices after replacing known suspects but not those that are not as susceptible to leakage, usage or shelf life issues. Testing it after having done so just now it seems to be quite close if not spot in with the capacitor values. EDIT: I am thinking of this device as a good way to check ESR (although I have not sorted that bit yet), leakage at rated working voltage and a quick check to see that the capacitor value is in range roughly for tube guitar amps I build and repair, and not much more because I have a nice DMM.Thanks.

A top video that explains much. Be careful, the 52 mk2 has 5 lower, plus side lugs. The cd drawer cover seems to need to be remove before extra access/ease of refit, this is done by exposing some of the drawer, (easy if the tops off), pushing the drawer front GENTLE to the left and a light tug forwards. The top rear screw secures the earth strap. Once understood this is an easy job

I'm doing a complete tear-down and rebuild on a DW733 Type 1. I find that if I tighten the roller brackets screws to be set; i.e., hand tight, one roller is very difficult to turn and the other will not turn at all. This, of course, before I put back the gear-chain assembly. I tried it out anyway and it resulted in quickly melting the synthetic belt. Yes, I did put the bushings in with the wide side parallel to the plane bed and lubed everything with a good grease. Thoughts?
