NEVER cut the zip ties 👔 from the spring before inserting it into the barrel. Doing so can cause serious injury. If the spring, however does need to be unwound before being inserted into the barrel, do so with heavy hand, eye, and body protection. The heavy cloth looked like 👍 a great idea 💡. Just subbed to your KZbin channel!! Your friend, Jeff!!

I found it easier to put the spring back in than take it out as it exploded like a box of frogs lol

Excellent job! I use to play this gramophone model here in India some 45-50 years ago. It belonged to my grandfather. He bought it for Rs. 50 before 1945. It was a masterpiece from His Master's Voice. Unfortunately we lost it over the time. As a child I always wondered what was going around inside that moved the turntable. Today you have solved that puzzle for me. Thanks a lot. I can see that you are so well equipped and skilled. I wish I could be your apprentice. Would you like to answer a few of my small queries? What is the function of governors? Why the drum (that houses the 2 springs) moves intermittently while the big gear wheel moves smoothly? How is the speed regulated to run at 78 RPM? I hope you would find some time to answer these queries. Thanks again.

Well the governor is There to slow down the speed and it stabilizes the speed.

Very good and turned out well. I had to fix a spring in one of these a while back and I am interested to see how you got the first spring down into the barrel. It didn't occur to me to tap it down via the dividing plate. It did take me a couple of goes however I was able to get the spring to go in and sit at the bottom of its own accord. Certainly do need to keep a good grip on them and I agree that best to fit the springs before putting the grease on. Thanks 😀 👍

Watching and interested to have a go at this myself sometime for the first time. Is that gramophone a double spring? Does that new spring come cable tied, so it can be removed inside the gramophone itself !! ? Last question……… Do you know if that company on that parts sheet are still in business or can you recommend somewhere that supplies a new spring. I hope you reply 🙂 Thank you

Hello, this gramophone is a double spring model. The new springs come cable tied with heavy duty ties. My replacement spring had 3 ties. Some people have commented on the approach of fitting the springs into the drum with the ties attached. This in my opinion is nonsense for a couple of reasons. The springs come pre-wound tight, but mine would not go into the drum as they are not wound tightly enough to fit into the drum. Secondly, assuming you can get the springs into the drum, as you cut the ties the springs would expand into the drum trapping the ties against the wall of the drum. I believe It would not be possible to remove the ties at this point. I see how people might think this would work, however, I haven't seen it done this way myself. The best place for gramophone springs is the internet or eBay. There are not many sellers left these days. It may be that once you get the old one(s) out you might be able to repair it or just refit depending on what caused the failure. I hope this helps and good luck. Thank you for your comment.

@@dembydish ok Thanks I’ve not ever worked on any gramophone in any way, apart from using different ones to upload to my KZbin channel. The spring in my HMV 130 is of course a double spring, it has been replaced once with a reconditioned one. I only want to buy another double as a future spare. The other gramophone in question that I want to try to replace a spring is a HMV 112. Is that a single or double do you know ? What you say about the cable ties and spring instalment now yes makes sense, thanks. But I hope to have a go at this spring replacement in the future, when I build a shed to work in and soon. I’m in my late 60s and don’t want senility to set-in before I try repairing the gramophone 🙂🙂

There is a way to adjust the sound on smaller portable gramophones. Have you heard the saying “put a sock in it’ rumour is that people would put a sock in the horn to reduce the volume.

It's good practice to keep the wire on new springs so that once you have the old one out you can push the new spring straight in and then cut the wire. No rewinding needed. Just care

old video, still I have to comment! Very nicely done, both the video and the job. I thought, clock springs were scary, but they are just about half the size of the gramophone springs!

@@hugonotti9192 Hello Hugo, clock springs... . I'm guessing here but I'm thinking large clocks, maybe Grandfather clocks? Anyway, the gramophone is still going strong and still making music. Thank you for your comment.

Wall clocks and the like, also older kitchen clocks. They get up to 1" in width and quite substantial thickness as well.

I was really surprised how good the HMV 5A soundbox sounds, and with the lid down the bass is boosted and the record noise is greatly reduced. It seems to handle all types of recordings well and produces a good sound. Nice gramophone too. When you get your new diaphragm and gasket fitted, I expect you'll be very happy. Thank you for your comment.

I would like to add my 2 cents worth! ..... If you would've left the outside wire on the new spring and removes the two tie wraps and slipped it back into the spring housing when you were ready for it and then removed the wire holding it together . You would of saved yourself a lot of time!

Hello, an interesting idea. The problem is the spring (as it was purchased) has a larger diameter (across the coil) than the cylinder it needed to be inserted into. Simply wouldn't fit inside! Thanks for your comment.

Do you repair soundbox ( hmv 5A ) ? My soundbox is ok except the tightening screw is loose when I put a steel needle inside . If has loose grip. I suspect the screw thread is damaged !
@dembydish
@dembydish 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Julian, I have not repaired a soundbox, there are some people on YT that have. However, it sounds to me your problem is as you've said a stripped thread. I'd suggest unscrewing the needle clamp to see if it's damaged. If not, then it's the receiving end that has stripped out. This can possibly be rethreaded with correct tap. There are some people who still repair these. You will need to research to find someone. Try other KZbinrs first they may have better information. Thank you for your comment and good luck.

hi gentle, at full recharg, how much turns do the crank? in my 2 130s i can do about 30 crank-turns from full descharge to full recharge. many thanks

I've never fully crank the handle to the point where it stops. I go by feel and turn slowly and steadily. I also occasionally wind it up with the platter turning. As long as it plays one side of the 78 (between winds) I'm happy with that. It's an old machine so I treat it carefully. Thanks for your comment.

I have this gramophone (I think it is an 'upped' version with deeper chrome finish on the metallic parts and very fine dark oak casing in perfect condition). I LOVE what you have done here. My gramophone is in really good condition, but one day I will probably need to replace some of the internal parts (the spring!) and your video is magnificent. I shall be ordering some parts that might one day need to be replaced, while they are still available. (My son and grandchildren will then have everything they might need in the future) Thank you so much for making this and sharing what you know with us all. Beautifully presented. Thank you.
