I so want to do the plague PBL they have but as a moms night, kind of a murder mystery/Masque of the Red Death vibe….So far no moms have been as excited about this as I am though 😂

Oh wow, what an interesting idea. A bunch of moms could do this quite quickly I should think. Some fun research over a glass of wine sounds ideal. And for Halloween of al times! You could drop food colouring in the wine and make it black. LOL

Great video! Why would we teach kids how to write, when there are so many great literatures out there can teach. 🤯

I have to say that, for my kid at least, I am seeing it pay off. We are reading-reading-reading. And we discuss the books. I am seeing it improve her spelling, the way she writes, and how she thinks about life around her the more she see through other people's eyes in books. We may go to a more formal program later but I don't see a rush at all.

Very clever idea!…Love your alter-ego’s name! We’ll have to check out the wolf documentary. PBS Nature Season 41 Episode 4 is about reintroduction of the American ocelot in Texas. It’s really interesting. Have you looked at the book “Problem-Based Learning in the Life Science Classroom” by Tom J. McConnell? My kiddo is really into cats and genetics, and the book has several PBLs about feline genetics. :) There’s also a PBL book on Earth and space by the same author, as well as physical science. If you check out the publisher, they have free sample chapters that you can download. Thank you so much for making this video. I have been curious to see how this went for you. I think my kiddo would love it.

Do you think that this would be a good idea for a once a week co-op class?
@ThePattersonHomeschoolAcademy
@ThePattersonHomeschoolAcademy 3 күн бұрын
I guess you could do that. How old are the kids? With older ones, absolutely. Because even while they meet once a week, you could link them via email and zoom meetings to discuss their work each evening. The lead mom could get on zoom as the coach and assist if one or a few kids gets off track. Each kid could add to a cork board in their home and when it is time for coop, they can bring all their materials and pin it all together on a larger board at coop so everyone has a visual of the whole. The risk you run here without meeting in the evenings and putting everyone's work together at the coop is that kids will only learn their portion of the material and miss a lot of info discovered by their colleagues. It's certainly a more real-world scenario and you would definitely have more to do as the mom. Or perhaps it would work well if your coop meets for a good couple hours each week and that whole chunk is taken up by research by the kids and learning to collaborate and create a sort of vision board of what they are learning and where they are going. I dont know how I would address doing this in a coop of mixed ages. There are a lot of things you can do with a PBL but I think mixed ages would be the most difficult unless you broke them up in teams and the older kids were managers/assistants over the littles???

This was fantastic, thank you so much for sharing. I am planning to do this in three weeks time with my 6th grader, so this is immensely helpful. I'm so glad it's helpful. I think your 6th grader will have a great time diving into it. I gave Morgan the afternoons to do the PBL, after our core subjects were done. When we do a unit study, that is all we do after lunch. You could easily follow the shorter schedule and leave however much time you like on the PBL, especially if you have a kid who gets into it. But you could drop everything for a few days and only do the PBL. Totally up to you and you kiddo.

So glad you liked the video. Morgan had the afternoons after lunch to work on the PBL and I didn't put a time on it. She was just done when she was done. Sometimes it was 30 minutes and sometimes 45 minutes. I think an older kid could work on it longer for sure. It was really an experiment to see what she could and would do on her own. I can imagine if you only wanted to work on the PBL for a fews days and drop other subjects, that would work, too. Maybe it would even be more fun that way -- doing loads of research while also getting break from regular routine and subjects. I think there are so many ways to plan this, really!

I hadn't thought about reading it before. Also, the book didn't arrive until we were just starting the PBL. I think you could do it however works best for you. It worked out best for us that I read the book in the evenings before bedtime. I forgot to mention that are several typos in the book... missing quotes, so it makes it difficult to figure out who is talking sometimes. I think this was not real formally published by a major house, but it doesn't make the book bad. Totally worth reading, especially since it was written by biologists with the ferrets interests in mind and with a great storyline.

There are two and the one I like is number 19. It's kind of interesting. As long as they don't switch numbers on me. The binder is just a tad rickety. I wish it was a bit more stable but it's not meant for carrying around and it doesn't cost a lot really.

Thank you for doing that video! I loved watching both aspects of that part of your homeschool. I am dabbling in the idea of a travelers notebook but trying to really think through how to lay it out before jumping in to it. I am spanning three different grades, but they have their own planners for tracking what comes next, so I don’t necessarily need to do that part. I more record keep and jot notes for goals and focus areas that need buttoned up with each kiddo. But I am thankful to see how you use one to get a better idea of what could be done with them. I also loved your fountain pen thoughts! I jumped in with both feet on the fountain pen bandwagon after seeing your first video of them and since then all three of my children have adopted the use of them. It is interesting that each of us have gravitated towards a certain brand that suits us better.

There are noticeable grammatical errors in The Broken Circle, missing quotations and things. I think it may have been a self-publishing kind of deal or with no editor or beta readers but it's still good. I especially gravitated towards the book since it was written by two scientists who worked in the field. But I was watching your video on the election PBL. That is one I am really excited to do. I really am thinking about making this a full HS credit course for a fun, low stakes junior year credit. A high input, low output course to lighten a heavy academic year. Morgan could do one a month. That would certainly be 1 HS credit. I feel like this is going to be a complicated video. All the videos I want to do the most are the hardest to make and edit.

I get that there are adults who don't like certain genres - avoiding sci-fi, fantasy, horror, or whatever. But that's because they've been exposed to those genres, and then have made a decision that something is just not for them, and I think that's fine. However, with children, I think it's important to expose them to a wide variety of genres, within reason (for example, I probably wouldn't sample horror with a Kindergartner.) At a minimum this will help them identify genres, and ideally help them develop their reading tastes. Of course, I agree that they should help select books that interest them within each genre.
@ThePattersonHomeschoolAcademy
@ThePattersonHomeschoolAcademy 25 күн бұрын
Yes, absolutely, And then there is the increased maturity of some books to avoid for a later date. For instance, Stephen King is studied in university courses but would be a bad idea to cover now. I find the old horrors are today's thrillers. Kids are used to Dracula, for instance, and the book has incredible discussions over what is good and what is evil. The dialog is long but surprisingly engaging. A lot of pulp fiction can be quite engaging and interesting if you can find back issues of Argosy Magazine. Sort of like old, campy tails and stories. And thank you for you thoughts!

I start the ideas around the books we want to read or around something my daughter is particularly interested in. Then I search everywhere I can, on line, at the library, bookstore magazines, old eBay magazines, amazon. University publications are easy to find and well known articles from old issues of major magazines. And I go from there. I'm not always successful but I do try. I also go to used bookstores and look for old editions of short story anthologies both fiction and non-fiction stuff. It's a hodge podge. But I like to do it. I stay well clear of kids magazines. Too cartoony.

Thank you! I have, and will be keeping, a math playlist over time. I just did a long view on mathematics for future years. The Math U See video seems to be popular. I mainly wanted to dispel the idea that mastery is not thorough or doesn't do review. Spiral and mastery are equally good, just depends on the kid and they all get to the same end, just differently. Happy homeschooling!

I forgot about Le Pens! Adding to my stocking stuffer list! Love the trilogy/long format. We used to live in a teeny tiny far-flung village. A classical music-loving couple there used to arrange for professional musicians to come once a year. And someone once asked this truly amazing world class pianist what he thought of our community hall’s 100+ year old gold rush-era upright, and he said he never met a piano he didn’t like. :) That’s how I feel about homeschool videos! Long, short, I watch ‘em all!!! (Well, mostly.)

We've definitely been in the same boat.. there are so many good options! We are just coming off of a week break after our first five weeks. I feel like I finally have gotten into a groove. We have been really enjoying Core Knowledge Language Arts for fourth grade. We just started Middle Ages and the conversations have been so rich. We tabled our writing curriculum (Writing and Rhetoric) to start MCT Paragraph Town. There's a nice long grammar review at the beginning which is nice. Beside those two and math, we are doing a study of South America. We do a continent study each year and it's probably my favorite. I'm really interested in hearing how you like Live Education. I won't be surprised if you revamp some of the format and lessons. I look forward to hearing how you make it your own.
@ThePattersonHomeschoolAcademy

Are you year-round as well? You mention rich conversations -- I think that may be the best part of home study. I love there is so much time for them. That is partly why I like our unit studies loose, so we can go any route that interests my kid and then the discussions are so much deeper and more student-driven. Speaking of groove, it does only just now feel like we are in a steady routine, mainly because of so many extra curricular activities I'm not used to. They feel necessary yet disruptive. But our routine was faster to normalise than last year when we were new. Live Education requires that a homeschool purchase their entire curriculum but I suspect over time we will predominantly use their science and art. I definitely feel like I'm making it up as I go with Waldorf, but I like that.

I'm not sure I want to jump into Waldorf education, but I will definitely be taking the suggestions for geography this year. This year, I wanted to focus on the 50 states but my son is not interested in the one worksheet per state. I think adding watercolors and creativity to each state will make it more entertaining and more memorable.
@ThePattersonHomeschoolAcademy
@ThePattersonHomeschoolAcademy Ай бұрын
I agree -- I remember geography being really fun when I was young and I think that was because there were so many maps and fun things to learn. The one-sheet-per-state thing would get tedious. When we were prepping for travel to Europe, I had Morgan pick the location she wanted to research and then asked her to find answers to things, like 'what is the location known for, what are 6 things you would want to do if you were there, how old is it, who lived there before the current people, average income, whatever. And then I let her look around online or in books for the answers. That worked really well. Maybe try that with a cartoon painting or drawing of the state or scenery from the state.

We are totally new and trying our hand at watercolor painting as part of our learning. I've always been interested in it, but I just really hadn't ever looked into it. It's so nice to have these upper elementary years to add in new skills and ways of expressing what you are learning.

I would love to jump into this, but wouldn’t have the faintest idea because we’re not a Waldorf family. I’ve always enjoyed and marveled at their use of watercolor with notebooking. Is the curriculum you’re using called “A Living Education?”
@ThePattersonHomeschoolAcademy
@ThePattersonHomeschoolAcademy Ай бұрын
It is "Live Education!" www.live-education.com. I watched several hours of Hanah's "Pepper&Pine" KZbin channel as I was deciding on curriculum once I discovered the Waldorf way of teaching/learning. She has a ton of videos covering several of the main lessons she has done throughout the years and also a flip through comparison between Live Education! and Oak Meadow and one other one that didnt appeal to me. Then I reached out to the Live Education! contact and spoke with him at length. It is a process to order the curriculum. They sort of want to interview you first to make sure the curriculum is something that will work for you and your family since it's a bit different. I am certain I was taught in the Waldorf fashion between 6th and 8th grade and so it really appealed to me and I really dove into it. It's something that really has to grab you and you must be really comfortable creating the details of the lessons and curating your own books and teaching from what you have read and learned vice reading to the child or doing a workbook. I am most interested in botany, physics and chemistry paired with art. But I didnt realize how fun geography would be this year.

It was hard to admit. I come from a career where, if you are on time, you are 15 minutes late! I was so exacting and tough on myself for years and years and now I don't even know what time it is when I wake up! I think that is why our daily huddle now before we start our day is so important -- between the two of us, I don't think we will miss anything again. That same week, we missed band. I was so annoyed and disoriented. I hadn't realised how carefree we had become.

Yeah, they dont highlight it at all. It seems to me there is a large info gap between homeschool moms who use curriculum at home to teach and those who outsource. So far, I have only seen people outsource math and it's usually only a couple of companies plus Oak Meadow. There is so much out there for homeschool moms that is not on KZbin or not obvious.

I love your summer idea of an immersive summer school! On your trip, you could each take a notebook and do your schoolwork on it (writing, science, history). Then just one workbook for math. Nothing too cumbersome.
@ThePattersonHomeschoolAcademy
@ThePattersonHomeschoolAcademy Ай бұрын
The nice thing about moving it to the summer is that I think even if we have moved to a year round school, I was planning on taking a few weeks completely off in the summer. And then 3 hours of immersive French overseas for a few weeks counts as school without adding in the other course so we wouldn't bring the rest of the curricula... maybe a book to read and hands-on social studies by learning the bus and train system, museums, cultural aspects, etc.
