I had a mitral valve replacement 10 weeks ago - using a mechanical valve as I’m 62. Recovery is going well and I’d like to be back at work (grocery delivery) before Christmas. No trouble with the sternotomy repairing, although the scar is still red and the skin is tight. This YT channel has been a great source of information before and since the operation.

Very good in explaining why my aortic valve became so sclerotic ... had my TAVR 11-5-2024 and luckily I did NOT have another stroke~! That was my biggest fear since I had hx of CVA x3. I heard my surgeon say (I was awake during my TAVR) "The baskets are full"... in ref to the calcium debris from my heart. Those filter baskets prevented another cva for me. Thank you Jesus, my surgeon, and whoever invented these filter baskets in my carotid arteries via my r. radial artery. An amazing experience to 'hear' all that went on in the cath lab for my TAVR... a fined tuned precision team work. Couldn't see a thing because I was in a 'tent' for infection control, but I heard everything. No one told me THAT part before my procedure. I rec'd. the bovine Edwards valve. Thankyou Dr. Gerdish for explaining what may now follow now that I'm 77 yrs. old and have a new lease on life.... and how my new valve may decrease re-calcification.

Why do the tissue valves fail sooner? They do seem to be a better choice.
@HeartValveSurgery
@HeartValveSurgery 4 күн бұрын
Hi Tom, That's a really great question. The durability of a tissue valve is dependent upon many things including wear-and-tear of the valve leaflets, potential calcium build-up on the bioprosthetic valve, the age of the patient, and other risk factors. We have to remember that the tissue valves are made from materials from a cow and/or pig that are not of human origin. To get you an even better answer to your question, we will ask a heart valve expert the next time we attend a medical conference. Sound good?

@HeartValveSurgery 4 күн бұрын
Hi PhatCat, Great point. As you know, each patient case is unique. What you may not know is that transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is being done on patients with bicuspid aortic valves. For example, Dr. Makkar (who is the interventional cardiologist being interviewed in this video) is doing research on TAVR for bicuspid aortic valve disease patients. That said, TAVR is not for every patient. There are many risk factors to consider. We imagine that your medical team has reviewed your anatomy (and risk factors) and discussed with you the benefits of traditional open heart surgery. That said, our thoughts are with you! 👍👍👍

Thank you very much. Very useful Video. My husband 87 years old, had his Mitral valve OP through clipping, but it was not successful as we were informed today. This broke my heart. An open heart operation. doctors say is too risky because of his age. But, without an operation, he has no quality in life. He can hardly climb the stairs; three steps and he is out of breath. He also has Asthma. He was operated upon for grade II meningioma and unfortunately had a brain hemorrhage, which had to be operated upon, but led to some difficulty finding words and memory loss. He is currently undergoing radiation therapy. Otherwise, his blood values are normal and, apart from the effects of the brain haemorrhage, he is generally normal. Do you think in his condition, an operation would be too risky? Or what would be the options? Thank you very much.

I am 58-year-old who unfortunately was born with bicuspid Aortic valve which was functioning very well until 2 years ago when it became heavily calcified. Went into operating theatre for Ross procedure 4 weeks ago. I was very happy and excited about it. However, when I wake up after the operation, I was told that Ross procedure could not be performed due to the fact my pulmonary valve cusps are thickened associated with a dilated annuls. Consequently, my Aortic valve was replaced with tissue valve. I have been very disappointed since I left the hospital as this is not the outcome I had hoped for. I have many questions and would highly appreciate if they can be answered; 1. Could my pulmonary valve be repaired and used? 2. Is there anything can be done going forward to prepare my pulmonary valve for Ross procedure in the future when the time comes to replace the tissue valve.?

I had cancer at 70, had to do chemo as I was triple negative aggressive ductal carcinoma. I had to do two different rounds but cancer free for five years. I am now 75 and having a lot of issues, severe fatigue, weakness, some dizziness off and on, skipped heartbeats, feeling like I’m going to faint yet reclined and resting, minor headaches, some sweating time to time even though I am indoors with air, swelling. I had the heart catherization two years ago in January, said everything looks fine but then red this is mainly for coronary and doesn’t show valve disease. Dr. Brescia at MUSC was my oncologist and told me up front chemo can sometimes cause cancer and can cause heart damage. I don’t feel MUSC had followed up with my heart like they should and now feel confused as to what to do. I have made an appointment with my primary for November 14 but because my levels always are good except for a cO2 level they don’t seem concerned. With my tissue valves I only took a baby aspirin 81 mg daily. Now I'm on Warfarin and have to check my INR weekly. I was told that the ON-X valve was not an option anymore because the anti clotting properties were inconclusive. Is there anything in the pipeline for people with the St. Jude or other carbon mechanical valves where they could switch off of Warfarin to something like Eliquis or Pradaxa? I had Endocarditis with each tissue valve and was told that a mechanical valve would be a better option for me at this point given my history. I'm in my late 50's and would like to avoid the complications that come with taking Warfarin long term if it all possible. Hoping there is something in the works were I can switch off of Warfarin safely.

H AlHerrera, Thanks for sharing your story with us. For mechanical valves, there was a clinical trial evaluating Eliquis as an alternative blood thinner to warfarin as you saw in this video. However, the clinical trial was stopped early. You can learn more about that at this link - www.heart-valve-surgery.com/heart-surgery-blog/2022/10/05/proact-xa-clinical-trial-stopped/. That said, the only mechanical valve we know of that has a lower warfarin regiment is the On-X aortic mechanical valve. You can learn more about that at this link - www.heart-valve-surgery.com/heart-surgery-blog/2024/05/16/on-x-mechanical-valve-safety-outcomes/. Hope that helps!

Hi Pharma, You raise a really great question. Unfortunately, as a patient advisory group, we are not trained or capable of providing specific medical advice. That said, we would strongly encourage you to discuss this question with your husband's medical team. If you are not getting information that you are comfortable with then perhaps you should get a second opinion. We so sorry that we cannot be of more immediate help to you!!!

I don't think the survival rate was the right question. I think the better question would be which surgery has lower complications? With robotic surgery, people are essentially trading off a faster recovery time against the risk of complications during recovery.

Kenneth, Great point. In January, we will be meeting with leading heart valve experts at The Society of Thoracic Surgeons meeting in Los Angeles. At that meeting, we will do our best to ask your question directly to a minimally-invasive specialist. Sound good?

In June 2022 I had my AV replaced with a bovine valve and aortic aneurysm replacement through MI procedure by Dr. Joseph Lamelas, U of Miami, he's an amazingly gifted surgeon! I was back to work in 3.5 weeks.

I had the Robotic Aorta replacement with a tissue valve done by Dr Badhwar at WVU. Even though they had to go back in a second time for some issues I was still out of the hospital in 4 days and fully recovered in 3 months.

There are risks to any surgical procedure. My wife was asymptomatic with a leaking mitral valve and a moderately enlarged atrium. We decided to go ahead and have the surgery at the Cleveland Clinic. Now unfortunately we are dealing with heart arrhythmias…… obviously the heart does not enjoy being cut. The electrical paths of conduction have been severed and altered……. The old methodology of waiting for symptoms may have been better in our case, because now we are dealing with a new set of problems……. Difficult decision…….

Hi William, Sorry to learn that your wife is having post-op arrhythmias. How long ago did she have surgery? Fyi, if she is experiencing atrial fibrillation, that is a relatively common post-op complication. Here is a video all about AFib after heart valve surgery that might be helpful for you - kzbin.info/www/bejne/rGHUiYaZiciHhc0.

Three heart surgeries later....I wish I felt like this after my surgery. It's almost 5 years later and I'm still getting the occasional random severe pains.

Hi Jude, So sorry to hear that you are continuing to experience discomfort five years after surgery? Where is the pain? If it's in the sternum, have you thought about getting the wires out? Here is a video about that - kzbin.info/www/bejne/qnWZkJ9nltOBm8U.
