I am 58-year-old who unfortunately was born with bicuspid Aortic valve which was functioning very well until 2 years ago when it became heavily calcified. Went into operating theatre for Ross procedure 4 weeks ago. I was very happy and excited about it. However, when I wake up after the operation, I was told that Ross procedure could not be performed due to the fact my pulmonary valve cusps are thickened associated with a dilated annuls. Consequently, my Aortic valve was replaced with tissue valve. I have been very disappointed since I left the hospital as this is not the outcome I had hoped for. I have many questions and would highly appreciate if they can be answered; 1. Could my pulmonary valve be repaired and used? 2. Is there anything can be done going forward to prepare my pulmonary valve for Ross procedure in the future when the time comes to replace the tissue valve.?

Hi Ahmed, Sorry to hear that you were not able to get a Ross Procedure. You raise a really great question. Unfortunately, we do not have a great answer for you. That said, we will put this question into our educational queue. The next time we meet with a Ross Procedure expert, we will ask your question and do our best to get an answer (hopefully on video). Sound good?

I had open heart aortic valve surgery one year ago. Would i be eligible for the Ross procedure in seven to ten years?
@HeartValveSurgeryАй бұрын
Brian, Great question. From what we understand, the Ross Procedure may be available to patients if their bioprosthetic or mechanical aortic valve needs to be re-replaced. That said, we will do our best to learn more about this possibility in the near future. In the meantime, we always encourage patients to discuss their specific cardiac questions with their respective medical teams. Hope that helps!!!

@@JustinKulm-gl3vc Do you know which Ross Regional center performs this procedure with combined aneurysm repair? Thanks in advance

CC, Great question. Here is a patient success story of Koert Takkunen, a bicuspid aortic valve and aneurysm patient, that got a Ross Procedure with Dr. Paul Stelzer at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City - www.heart-valve-surgery.com/heart-surgery-blog/2024/05/19/ross-procedure-patient/. That said, this is a very, very, very complex procedure. We would encourage you to find a medical team dedicated to the Ross Procedure that has a lot of experience with the Ross Procedure.

Gillian, Great question. The oldest aortic valve patient that we are aware of who received the Ross Procedure was 76 years old. However, the Ross Procedure is typically used for younger patients. That said, we would encourage you to discuss the Ross Procedure with your medical team.
