I grew up with the game gear version of the game, so I'm used to the screen crunch and the music in the title screen and title cards sound better on the game gear in my opinion. They sound much more robust to me. My definitive way to experience the two versions is on the MiSTer FPGA system with Turbo enabled in the core to smooth out the gameplay. It eliminates 100% of the slowdown and makes the game flawless for me.

I mean im not surprised since the snes is frankly more powerful, the genesis had certain benefits over the snes such as a more advanced sound chip and a faster clock speed on its cpu which allowed for sonic to be, well sonic 2. Thing is the snes is just beefier under the hood. Now sonic 1 isnt exactly pushing the console tho, sonic 2 and 3 both were more tailored to the genesis and took advantage of what it did better than the snes so i kinda doubt the snes could handle either without significant sacrifices. At the end of the day the snes was more powerful but the genesis and snes existed in a day where hardware was very specialized so both consoles were quite different which lead to sonic 2 and 3 working very well on the gensis and taking great advantage of the hardware with games like f-zero and super metroid doing the same for the snes, hence why ports are such heavy work, its not just compiled c-code you can recomiple and edit to get it working on the other guy, you need deep knowledge of the hardware to even make a game for things prior to the 360 days, with the gamecube generation being easier than past generations by a lot but still that generation featured some wild hardware like the dreamcast being 128 bit and the ps2 using a very complex cpu structure. Hardware from then and back was just so different which makes the more powerful consoles of the time hard to distinguish and makes ports a bitch
