can you elaborate on the add water to lye you die comment ,,

It’s a chemical reaction. Adding water to lye would be too concentrated initially causing a very strong reaction. That’s why you add lye to water as it dilutes instantly.

Oven cleaning setting. However, it can smoke. Make sure you can vent. Once cooled, light scrubbing should suffice. Then reseason with real lard or fat until slick black. My iron is like a nonstick coating.

@RowesRising If you know how - this can be done even in the apartment. On the gas stove or hobo stove. Also, better do not dissolve lye in large quantities of water, but put cookware in plastic bag, rinse with couple cup of solution, wrap it and let sit into that bucket.

Great video packed with information...most people buy brand new and never learn the basics of certain things. Getting something old and abused, refurbishing it and spending that time makes a person respect the item. I can see me doing this on an old stump I've been trying to kill! Cheers!

I went to Costco for the very first time over the summer. My husband and I are both gluten free so I loved all the GF products! My favorite buys were the King Arthur Gluten Free All Purpose flour and the 2-pack of gluten free bread. The prices for both were far better than anything I can buy at our local stores.

It’s scary never knowing when it will get that bad. I have had 4 flares curled up in a ball in the floor this week alone- no rhyme or reason. I just have to live one moment and one day at a time. I appreciate you watching my videos ❤️

If you eat at restaurants you are eating food cooked in lye cleaned cookware! Additionally, a 1:1 vinegar bath neutralizes and gets rid of any remaining lye.

Those meals….😋 I have cast iron and love it but do you find that Lodge rusts easier than others? I never had problems except the ones from Lodge. It could have been me though. 🤷🏻‍♀️
@RowesRising
@RowesRising 11 күн бұрын
Immediately after cleaning, I heat dry it on my stove top and coat it in a thin layer of fat. This prevents any rusting. Maybe some folks here can share their experience with lodge? I personally don’t have any experience with the brand. I do notice they seem to have a rougher surface? Some folks say to sand down the lodge brand until smooth and then season. I wonder if it holds more water and needs to be dried more? Or is a lid being left in or is there still moisture when you store it. Or maybe high humidity?

I 61 years old I've known people that would put their cast iron in the fire and burn off everything from the cast iron. I've also known others that soaked their cast iron in pot ash water for three days then scrubbed everything thing off the cast iron. Potash has lye in it Plus the charcoal works as a abrasive without scratching the cast iron. Then they received their cast iron with hog lard. Coconut oil avocado oil olive oil or any other seed oil will go rancid then when one cooks they food it will taste rancid. Hog fat is rendered down to lard and doesn't go rancid.

Soap and water washes out the seasoning. I was taught never wash your pans just wipe the. Out and oil with lard or tallow

@RowesRising
@RowesRising 11 күн бұрын
You can use soap and it won’t affect the seasoning. You will need to reapply fat once you heat dry your cast iron thoroughly. The seasoning is there you just need to maintain it.

1:1 water and vinegar. Submerge your cast iron for 20 minutes then scrub and rinse repeat if needed to remove rust. Dry thoroughly then season.

It has a learning curve but totally worth using and getting the experience cooking with it. I had to re teach myself as an adult cause my mom cooked with it when I was a child. So although I remember- I didn’t have anyone teach me. I had to learn by trial and error, and research.

This is my second time restoring my skillet in the 20 years I’ve had it. I prefer it this way, personally. I don’t like the chunky build up of carbon on the bottoms and sides of my cookware from spillage dripping down the sides and getting burned on😅 The inside was fine- I wanted to clean the crud on the outside that was built up enough to nearly cover the ring on the bottom from poor maintenance on my end- not wiping or scrubbing it off between uses. No thanks!
