Sometimes I wonder why people don’t protect the car and mechanicals from the environment when storing. Carefully placed tarps are not that expensive; definitely less expensive than the damage caused when not protected. Those CV joints use Torx type or Allen (can’t remember exactly which) bolts just like you said. They possibly found the same thread and pitch bolts with conventional hex head and replaced the originals. A shame that the car was pretty solid and got a DIY spray can paint job. They didn’t even mask correctly or took things apart. There also seems to be irregular body filler in some body panels.

What kind od spray you put on wire make it easier go through.

A silicone spray. It does not agitate the wire insulation.

Nice check sheet. Good idea. I just make notes then keep it all together. Then misplace later !!! Most places just do the standard measurements & cut the line bore. Nowadays - there is soooo much inconsistency in the bearings. I know a few people that set there cutters to the actual bearings being used. Otherwise you might have to use different bearings from several sets just to get a full set for one block Parts QA has really suffered. As if these engines aren't a pain to assemble & reassemble to make sure everything is working together. Not every single piece needs to be checked out.

Yes; I’ve seen that. What would be interesting to know is if that is as effective as decklid standoffs at the top. You would think that hot air expelled from the engine at the back of the car would be accumulating in that area but then again this opens the sides of the decklid area a little as well.
@FixinBugsNStuff2 ай бұрын
You are right, the hot air does accumulate at the top of the lid regardless of the tennis ball. The best option is stand-offs for that particular lid.

I totally hate when inept people ruin a VW motor. When you reassemble te clearance shims are very important. This has to be done right. Also if the crank has damaged the case,the only thing recommended by real VW engineers is replacing the case. It's nearly impossible to get the cam ,crank clearance right on a line bored engine. So great job.

Now you know why Volkswagen uses a forged flywheel from the factory. Cast fly wheels are junk and should never be used in a VW. Only manufactured for cost savings. Also never put a light flywheel on without a good gland that it’s a recipe for disaster. I am sure a lot of people that buy long blocks that are available from major suppliers now will have this issue in the near future . Because all of their motors come with. Cast flywheels and Crankshaft. And they are garbage if the flywheel does not break the center out of it the crankshaft will break. Welcome to the age of shitty Volkswagen parts

Absolutely right.

I had the same thing happen to me in a 69 that I had years ago. The gland nut came loose and tore the whole thing apart. The engine still ran but would free wheel. I thought it was the clutch, but oh no! Luckily it was a stock 69mm non counterweighted POS crank! Thanks for sharing this!
