I'm sorry. But that driver was set up. The police officer had plenty of clear road ahead of him, and even appeared to slow down, baiting the car behind him, with the car on the right now going faster than him and leaving him. The guy behind the cop got frustrated because too many times you have people running the left lanes too slow. You're supposed to keep right unless passing. Even the driver in the car shooting this scene was ready to pull into the left that opened up to pass this plain cop car, until his lights went on. I would think that keeping right unless passing would apply to police cars also. The moral of the story in my 40 years plus of driving experience? Don't let people get to you. If you come up on a slow or any idiotic driver, just hang back until the opportunity comes when you can pass them safely and then just go about your business. It's a good way to avoid drama and police officers who are out to "test" you. Nobody should be running the left lane like that, even the police, unless something is going on, something is wrong or perhaps, you are out here playing games. At the very least I would've fought that ticket.

I can't stand tailgating high beam MFrs, especially when there's snow on the ground. Wish cops patrolled the highway during a blizzard, too many dumb people thinking the rules don't change when the weather does.

My TV teacher Bill Elliott (no NASCAR connection) shot downtown Toronto night traffic scenes to be used as filler between sign off and sign on in the middle of the night on Global TV.. Basically what you are seeing here without the flashing lights. I guess he was ahead of his time because the ratings were solid and he couldn't believe it.

I was involved in a tailgating incident by a COP himself. It was decades ago on a rural California two lane in each direction highway. I was cruising along in the right, slow lane at the 55 MPH speed limit. There was no other traffic in sight. I came around a curve and there was a car doing 45 MPH in my slow lane. I signaled to move to the left lane to pass and did so. As I did the car on my right started to quicken his speed to pace my car. Suddenly, in my rear view mirror I spotted a Calif Highway Patrol car moving up fast behind me, now in the left lane. The CHP car started to tailgate me, only feet from my bumper, but with no emergency lights activated. I tried to move to me right but every time I slowed down or speed up a little, the car in the right lane did the same. I started to think that this was speed trap of some kind. I quickly assessed that if I slowed way down the cop would stop me for blocking traffic. If I speed up, a speeding ticket. If I just kept going as I was, failure to move over. I started to think I must be paranoid so I speed up quick to 60 MPH and passed the car on the right, thinking the cop was just in a hurry. The cop immediately pulled me over for going 5 MPH over the speed limit. Then the real reason for this foolishness. The cop asked to search our car. I had nothing to hide and let him. He conducted a through 10 minute search and then said we could go with a warning. This whole incident left a bad taste in my mouth regarding cops that has lasted for decades.

Tailgaters should be charged with putting lives in danger. Mandatory six months imprisonment plus another six months for every vehicle within 200 feet. Need to stop being so lenient and give a real reason for people to stop being morons.

I'm scared to tailgate because what if the driver in front of me has to suddenly hard- brake, and I don't respond quickly enough? No matter how frustrating another driver on the road might be, it's not worth the risk of driving recklessly.
