Not long ago there was an unmarked state trooper in the fast lane pacing the traffic. They’re not hard to spot. Everybody was doing the speed limit. Then a Nissan 370Z runs up behind the trooper and flashes his headlights. The trooper moved to the right and let him pass. Nissan takes off thinking he had open road ahead. The trooper gave him a few seconds then took off after him. He caught up to him and pulled him over. Bet that Nissan driver felt stupid.

@@whatheck6709 No doubt there. Since Nissan merged with Renault in 1999, build quality and reliability have been horrendous. The CVT transmissions in Nissans only add to this dumpster fire of a car.

That's a great lesson for all of us. Never tailgate another driver, even if you think he is at fault and driving slow in the left lane. Tailgating is dangerous, can lead to road rages, and its illegal.

This same thing happened yesterday while my wife and I were driving on a freeway. Speed limit was 65mph, traffic was flowing at 70mph, and state trooper in a charger with ghost decals and no visible light bar driving in the outermost left lane slowly passed everyone. About two minutes later an Acura going at least 85mph passed by us. I told my wife to keep an eye up ahead because I knew that Acura was going to not see the trooper and try to pass him. Sure enough, about 30 seconds later the Acura whipped around the trooper and suddenly there’s Christmas lights in May. The Acura started to pull to the right shoulder and the trooper shut his lights off and continued down the road.

Tailgaters should get a mandatory 1 month loss of license and a year as a level 3 sex offender AND sent back to driving school. It makes no sense at all - 1. If you hit the guy you're tailgating, it is your fault. 2. It's not going to make people speed up for you, it's just going to piss them off and make them drive slower.

I noticed this as well living here, although I will admit a smallish portion bring it upon themselves by driving like assholes. Merging way under speed, cutting people off w/o room or no signals into the passing line then proceed to drive 5klicks under the limit etc.

I witnessed a similar incident about 15 years ago. Some guy flew by me like I was standing still, (I was doing 60), he flew past me, a car several yards ahead wasn't going fast enough for him so he shot around that car too. Then the back of the other car exploded into blue and white lights. The cop was so pissed he didn't even bother to pull over behind the guy when he stopped. The deputy just pulled over on the opposite side of the road and began yelling at the driver. I slowed down and waved at the guy in such a hurray. Not only was he going to be late, but he was going to have to pay a HUGE fine.

Here in Utah, the cop would have been in the wrong. You’re supposed to keep right unless you’re actively passing. The cop was clearly not trying to pass the car in the right lane. If you’re in the left lane and a car comes up behind you, you’re required to move over to let them pass, regardless of how fast you’re going.

I was involved in a tailgating incident by a COP himself. It was decades ago on a rural California two lane in each direction highway. I was cruising along in the right, slow lane at the 55 MPH speed limit. There was no other traffic in sight. I came around a curve and there was a car doing 45 MPH in my slow lane. I signaled to move to the left lane to pass and did so. As I did the car on my right started to quicken his speed to pace my car. Suddenly, in my rear view mirror I spotted a Calif Highway Patrol car moving up fast behind me, now in the left lane. The CHP car started to tailgate me, only feet from my bumper, but with no emergency lights activated. I tried to move to me right but every time I slowed down or speed up a little, the car in the right lane did the same. I started to think that this was speed trap of some kind. I quickly assessed that if I slowed way down the cop would stop me for blocking traffic. If I speed up, a speeding ticket. If I just kept going as I was, failure to move over. I started to think I must be paranoid so I speed up quick to 60 MPH and passed the car on the right, thinking the cop was just in a hurry. The cop immediately pulled me over for going 5 MPH over the speed limit. Then the real reason for this foolishness. The cop asked to search our car. I had nothing to hide and let him. He conducted a through 10 minute search and then said we could go with a warning. This whole incident left a bad taste in my mouth regarding cops that has lasted for decades.

I remember someone tailgating me on the freeway several years ago. I was heading to work real early so I was out there at 4:30 in the morning so there’s barely anyone cars around. I’m pretty much a go with the flow driver but in this case since it was so early I just stayed at the normal 65speed limit on the slow lane. At some point this driver in a mini van shifted to the slow lane going at 80+ from what I could tell from my rear view mirror. I literally was monitoring the speed because I saw them change lanes quite a ways back. Anyways they end up right behind me. There’s no nearby exits or any other cars around so I’m like wtf? If you want to go fast just stay on the other 3 mostly open left lanes. They did not move and kept tailgating. I’m like whatever and just kept under the speed limit. I even pumped the brakes a few times to scare them lol. At some point they got to an exit but I was thinking what an a$$hole. Lol.

Should pull their license. Tailgating is the cause of a lot of roadrage. Tailgating is bullying. Remember that almost anything can be weaponized. Motor vehicles have very dangerous weaponized potential, which the bully driver employs.

My TV teacher Bill Elliott (no NASCAR connection) shot downtown Toronto night traffic scenes to be used as filler between sign off and sign on in the middle of the night on Global TV.. Basically what you are seeing here without the flashing lights. I guess he was ahead of his time because the ratings were solid and he couldn't believe it.
