Hi Jason, am I correct in saying the epoxy is the only thing holding the top and bottom together? Is that how you would normally add a top or would you use some kind of screw? Thank for making these videos, it’s great to see your work!!
@JasonHedrich2 күн бұрын
@@agreatalternative I always add a threaded rod or plain steel rod along with the epoxy. I try and add at least 2” into each section, larger pieces get 3” in each side. I use either 1/4” or 3/8” diameter rods

Not sure it has enough weight for fighting, its a good everyday walking cane. I left it a bit long so it can be used like a hiking stick or shortened down to a cane.

I LOVE your project, great technique as well. What might the effects of a sanding sealer have been on the skull? Would it have controlled the color in a way you would have wanted it to? Come to think of it, if you wanted the skull to look like bleached bones, could you used a clear oil, such as mineral oil so the wood could retain it's whiter color???? just a thought! Thanks for your video, and sharing your knowledge and skill.
@JasonHedrich22 күн бұрын
Thank you! I just put a coat of oil on the wood but it does yellow it a bit... not sure about the sanding sealer, I never used it so its tough to guess what the effect would be. Maybe a bleached white stain might have kept it more white. Either way the contrast is there so I liked how it turned out.

Very cool piece, Jason! There is a woodturner from Wales named Huw (Davies I think is his surname) who does something similar to pen blanks except that he adds an inlay from each side of the blank. When turned, this makes a Celtic knot pattern. I commented on his video that this would be great for a shank decoration on a stick. His channel is Wooden It Be Nice. (I've seen it done with rolling pins as well)
@JasonHedrich26 күн бұрын
I will try and find it. I got the idea from a rolling pin someone made with an inlay pattern. I thought it would make a good handle for a stick

Lovely stick. I'm guessing the lamination of the handle is for increased strength? I sometimes inset the metal rod (bent to the correct curve) between my laminated handles for added strength as some of the Tasmanian (Australian) timbers I use are lacking in strength. Thanks to this video I'm going to see if I can track down a Kutzall Bur as they seem much more efficient than the type of cutter I've been using. Thanks for the great video and the pleasing stick.
@JasonHedrichАй бұрын
Thanks for watching! The lamination was done to get the thickness I needed for the stick... the boards were 3/4" (19mm) thick and I needed more to be comfortable in the hand. The metal rod adds strength and ensures that the joint doesn`t break. Yes, the Kutzall burrs are great and come in different grits from extra coarse to fine!
