HOW TO CARVE A THUMBSTICK

Today we will go through a step by step guide on how to carve a thumbstick walking stick. Made from red oak, Bolivian rosewood and (I think) cherry stick. This makes an extremally comfortable stick for hiking and walking in the woods.

@AlterdCarbons I stsrred off with just buying those 4ft dowels you can get from any home reno stores. They aren't the best wood to carve, but it's let you get your foot in the door!

@@belac48621 yes, I've done a few sticks with those dowels. They are good because of the constant diameter so it helps when carving a pattern.

Friendly observation !!! Your chisels , your whittling & woodcarving knife & your Forstner drill bit , seem to need a lot of pressure for them to work in wood for you !!!

Around the 10 minute mark, your using a dremel. Whats the black attachement thats abovr the bit?

It's a small LED light. It's removable but I keep it on in case I need extra light.

Turned out great Jason! Is it just my imagination or was that handle sitting on your bench through the last two videos? Could have sworn I saw something thumbstick-looking sitting there when you were working on the cross handle, and a quick glimpse during the dog head. I really want to try the hex pattern on a stick maybe with resin and some wasps or bees in the holes.(Dead ones found somewhere of course.)

Absolutely correct! I started this a while ago but carving the oak took so long that other projects came up and it kept getting pushed. Eventually finished it and turned out like I wanted. I had the same idea with the honeycomb pattern, wanted to carve them deep and fill them with yellow epoxy… one day that one will get done! Keep those sharp eyes open… keeping me honest!

Fine work on this. I enjoy making walking sticks and do so near everyday. I have not attempted to sell anything but am disappointed to see how little they sell for on places like Etsy or even Ebay. I ‘d like to clear out my inventory but I hate just giving them away though I may do so for a few co-workers.

I will occasionally do custom orders but it’s a hobby and I like the fun in it. One day I’d like to make it a full time gig of some sort, but we aren’t there yet! Thanks for watching
