I have several oil lamps that I’ve never known how to use.I’m going to get them out and give them a try! Thank you so very much for this video!

It was wonderful seeing both of you and hearing your comments. I love vintage newspapers and books. There is so much to learn.

Super helpful! It didn't know that there were different kinds of wicks or different fuels! Now I have to check my lamps.

I grew up with kerosene lamps. The wick was always trimmed with a definite curve in it. The center is the high point of the curve. This way you do not have so much charcoal build up and burn off.

We had a few of these lamps growing up in the 80s and 90s. They were always full of oil and the wick needed trimming. I’m pretty sure it was rarely trimmed. Thank you for the tips! I definitely would like to get oil lamps again in the future.

You inspire me a lot. Since I've been following you, I've specialized my lifestyle even more in the context of the 1930s. I'm writing this by the light of an oil lamp, by the way. Thank you so much. The only electrical devices I use regularly are the refrigerator, telephone and computer. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to see you. 😊 There are more people who live in other eras.

Such delightful videos and I love the history you present. I would love the old Good Housekeeping and the likes of those kinds. Will have to do some research. As I write this on a smart phone and found you in a smart phone I say that I dislike immensely all the tech stuff and the modern world and avoid it as much as possible. Thank you

I've seen music magazines like the Etude, if I remember correctly, and agree that much can be learned about the past from vintage magazines. I delighted in your beautiful dress and dear kitty joining in, as well.

Fantastic video as always, and I keep thinking, I thought there were magazines for everything now. Not like there were back then.

I can still remember my parents lighting their cigarettes off the chimneys and the oil lamps in our hunting camp many years ago.

Couldn’t newspapers from around the Victorian era be the same thing too?

Thank you for your great information! I have two oil lamps with kerosene in them. I haven’t used them in over 25 years. Does kerosene go rancid ever? If so should I dispose of the kerosene (in a responsible way), clean it out and start over, wick and all? They’ve been on a high shelf all these years, but I would like to put them in working order in the case we should need them.

THANK YOU for this VERY useful video!!! This is a hard subject on which to find accurate information. When we moved to rural Tn I began collecting things like oil lamps and cast iron. I use them all the time due to the power going out in almost every storm.

I used to teach a class on letter writing, to kids ages 9-14, and I remember their horror when I read them this Lewis Carroll quote: "I have proved by actual trial that a letter that takes an hour to write takes only about three minutes to read." 😂😂😂 One little mathematician exclaimed "but that's a ratio of twenty to one!" After horrifying them with that factoid, we then brainstormed about why the "wasted" time of writing by hand might be worth it in the end, and I gave them many of the reasons you've mentioned, and they always managed to come up with several more on their own. It was a surprisingly popular class. I think even the virtual generations have a hankering after real, tangible things.

Due to our daughter's upcoming wedding, we've been grabbing up every oil lamp we can find....she wants them for centerpieces on the tables. I think we're up to about 50 now! LOL I'm gonna need to buy a truckload of wicks. 😁 thank you for this lovely video---and your dress is GORGEOUS!!!!
