I’ll be honest. When I saw the thumbnail, I wasn’t sure I’d be interested in the topic, but I clicked because the cat is adorable. Excellent marketing. 👏🏻 I did enjoy the video as well.

I know of a case where the MAN threatened to sue even though she had never actually agreed to marry him. She was well off,and her friends warned her that he was broke and drank so she backed off from his epistolary wooing. She was furious, and wrote back "would you have me marry you whether I like it or no?" She was called Margaret Fountaine. Quite a feisty lady. His letter is quite amusing and full of "OH!!!!!!!!!!" etc etc as he saw her money becoming ever distant.

My grandfather was sued by a woman just after WW1 after he married my grandmother instead. I have yet to be brave enough to request the court documents!

I read your wonderful book “This Victorian Life”! I got from my library on a whim and it ended up my favorite from the lot I took home that day

The that shocked me because of its cruelty was the married Kentucky US senator who had 4 children by his young mistress, forced her to give them all up because it didn't look good for his career; when his wife died, he remarried to a wealthy socialite, and his jilted mistress -- who had lost it all -- sued him and won.
