I’m just coming to this video but what you say about ciprofloxacin is maybe 30% accurate. The side effects you mention (tendon rupture, peripheral neuropathy) happen often enough that I’ve heard of one person who had Achilles tendon rupture while on cipro. This is of all the people ive known including myself who have taken fluoroquinolones. They’re really uncommon side effects, about as common as getting SJS from Bactrim. Antibiotics can rarely have super serious side effects, yeah. People often demand them or expect them for illnesses that are self-limiting. We try to be good stewards. Cipro gets used because things are resistant to beta lactams and shit. We aren’t throwing this shit out. Also this guy clearly didnt have prion disease, IDK what this was but it wasn’t fatal insomnia which is by definition a prion disease. Antibiotics don’t cause prion disease as far as we know there’s absolutely no reports of this ever happening from a fluoroquinolone. This is kinda like people blaming everything that goes wrong in their life on vaccines or whatever. Honestly it sounds like the weird neuropathic pain or whatever was initially causing his insomnia and maybe that could’ve been cipro but still that’s so so rare. I don’t love fluoroquinolones as much as the next prescriber but in some cases they are standard of care.

7:17 dude, this.. i had the same exact thing happen to me. i couldn’t go to sleep-and then my brain slipped into that dark place. it lasted about a month or two straight, just as u said, and id have frequent attacks in which id sob. even a few weeks after, i developed ptsd from the thought. however, i soon found my place in religion, and i do no longer worry. although the thought is still scary, focus on things that give you hope.

I found one of the notes in one of those 6 packs of Mott's apple sauce packages back in 2023, which someone could've easily slipped in the packaging.
