For removing those wheel bearings where you can't get a drift to bite because the spacer is in the way, remove the grease seal from the bearing and break up the bearing cage with a small punch. It'll come out in a bunch of smaller pieces. Move all the balls around to one side and the inner race will come out. Now you can take out the spacer and drive out the bearing on the opposite side. Put the other bearing back together by placing all the balls on one side, insert the inner race and spread the balls back around the bearing and then drive it out.

If those are the same fuel filters I tried from Amazon (they look identical), they're garbage. After a short time, the element falls off inside the housing and becomes loose. Also, WD-40 is great for grinding, drilling, and tapping, aluminum parts. I've found it good when you have to use a flexible sanding wheel on aluminum as they usually foul up quickly. And lastly, do you have any left-handed drill bits? They're great for screws that break off from tightening as those usually unwind easily (as opposed to rusted screws or those that have been bottomed out and broken off)
@true-moto-resto5 күн бұрын
Thanks for the tip on the filters Lorne !. Yes I have 2 sets of left hand drill bits, use them alot in this hobby. I use WD40 alot, you may have seen that when i polish aluminum. on tapping, I've used it too, but find a thicker oil works better for me and seems to pull the swarf into the tap flutes better.

Great video. Was there an issue before rebuilding the carbs? I have a 1982 cb900c and only cylinders 3 and 4 are firing. I just bought it so not sure what was done before. Thanks
@true-moto-resto7 күн бұрын
The bike had sat in a barn for many many yrs. This was just one video of many showing the full restoration of the bike. Carbs are just one part of the process (2 videos on carb rebuild , this was part 1) For your bike, start with the basics. Does it have spark on 3 and 4? Does it have good compression on 3&4? Does is come alive on 3 and 4 if you squirt some fuel down the carbs throats ? These carbs are quite complex, 3 jets per carb and on some model years you have to drill and tap one of the jets to remove it. There are accelerator pumps and air cut valves etc But, start simple and track the problem down to spark, compression or fuel first
@FranciscoGalicia7 күн бұрын
@true-moto-resto thanks for your reply. All have spark and compression. 3 and 4 works great. I will directly inject starter fluid to 1 and 2 to see if is a carb issue of no sending fuel to the cylinders. Thanks again. Regards

Yes, finding mis-matched and unoriginal cam cap bolts really gives me the irrits, too. Sign of someone being less than careful in the past... You may have difficulty finding all the original types that you need. Maybe you can visit a breakers/ wreckers and swish through their bins of random bolts? You may just find what you need in there, esp. if you have a correct one in hand for reference.

You’ve probably already moved past this point in your restoration, but you might want to get a complete set of new cam cap bolts. Due to their age and the stresses they’ve been subjected to (including people not using a torque wrench to properly tighten them) they tend to break when torquing them properly. Love the project and enjoy the updates. Looking forward to the next show.

Thanks, Good tip, finding them for reasonable $ here in Canada is a problem. Shipping and duties from the USA and Europe is madness. Kawasaki Canada has none. I have some on the way , but not all. Likely the ones there that are incorrect were snapped off at some point. On your advice, I ordered the rest of the bolts. I’ll change them all. I’ve not removed the current ones yet, hopefully they don’t snap coming out.

At last , thanks for the video. I have a 1998 model ran fine when put in storage but after years I came to start her and fuel was pouring out of carbs . Took them off and sonic washed them and also replaced every seal in the carbs also new carb rubbers as the old ones were solid . She was a runner again . Not used just put away in the garage as a runner but now she wont start . Upon trying to start she backfires and that's it . Took the tank off and put a direct fuel feed to carbs and happy days she started so put the tank back on after several start ups and she ran with tank on . All fresh fuel by the way . I could feel the pump pulsing and thought that was it shes good to go ! No shes not having it so bought a new pump just incase it was working independently 😢😢. No shes still dosnt want to play. I've checked all fuses and your explainastion is the best I've seen . Am from England and we have what's called Haynes manual, that rubbish. I have 2 Honda trained mechanics and this has got them stumped . They haven't been to the bike but over the phone we have addressed every possible Avenue apart from bridging the wires as you did . Haynes dosnt show another detail a as for as trouble shooting they are saying valve clearens and other crap not related. I joined a forum and they are all saying the same jobs we have already covered . Shes a 1998 and tidy for roads in this country but yours is mint . Anyway time out I've probably board you enough but thanks last check is bridge wires ! Something am not comfortable doing but you have helped .
@true-moto-resto13 күн бұрын
Glad the video was helpful. Yes, try the jumper wire, it’s easy to do. You can also pull the fuel line off at the same time and do a flow test to see how much fuel is getting delivered from the pump. If it runs fine when u bypass the pump off a separate fuel supply, then it is likely a problem between the petcock and the pump or filter . Assume u checked the petcock I assume you changed the filter Check the fuel lines too, make sure none have collapsed. One caution I would give is this… I use an ultrasonic cleaner too…However, they are not the be be all and end all. In fact there are places in the carb circuits that the UScleaner will not help. I always clean via 3 methods on each set of carbs. 1) chemical - Use a quality carb cleaner, and let them soak for a day. make sure Andy rubber diaphragms are removed first, and make sure u can see the carb cleaner spray out of all the correct orifices to show they’re clear 2) mechanical, use a high E guitar string or carb cleaner tools to run through the carb passages etc 3) ultrasonic with a good cleaner product in it. So many times carbs get ultrasonically cleaned and they really are not clean. It happens.

@true-moto-resto Hi many thanks for your reply, after everything stated in previous message I bought some new plugs and would you believe it she started on the first press . Again put the tank back on but pump was going crazy so swapped the pipes back over that soon sorted the pump . She dodnt like the choke been turned off so again looked in so called Haynes repair manual and still no wiser . Eventually found something on internet saying all the way clockwise then turn back . All this was done yesterday and a check for start up today was good . For new plugs , fuel pump and filter £34 and I bike that's happy. Oh yes and am happy she sounds good . Bought one new in 1998 but got wiped out in 2001 . Fireblades up to buying this to keep my no claims bonus going . They are a good all rounder. Anyway am wittering on . I’m trying to bring an 81 cb900c back to life and after cleaning the carbs I found a tiny ball bearing, tightly wound spring, and what seems to be a brass square with a circular nub on one end in the bottom of my ultrasonic cleaner. I have no idea where it came from and was hoping it was something from the accelerator pump but the little brass square is still in the carb body for the accelerator pump. Any idea where this might have come from?
@true-moto-resto14 күн бұрын
It’s been so long since I cleaned the carbs on the CB900. I’ve done so many carbs, they all become a blurt. On some carbs , the small springs and balls are from the choke assembly. The rod that actuates the choke plungers is held in place by a detention ball and spring so it stays out and doesn’t go back in (choke off) unless you push the rod in. These are usually on the carbs that have the choke actuator rod right on the carbs and not in the handle bars. Mikuni flat slides are like this On the CB900 carbs, I honestly don’t recall. But I will say there are 3 videos on these carbs here on my channel It took me 3 attempts to get them properly sorted out On the pre 82 carbs, there is a slow speed jet that you have to drill and tap to extract it in order to properly clean it. I can only suggest watching all 3 videos and hope that you see what your looking for Thanks for watching as commenting
