Jen CONGRATULATIONS!!! on your victory over the dreaded RKN. I'm happy for you after your struggles with sweet potatoes. Obviously you didn't view Growing Your Greens post on seed starting (92% longer roots with one ingredient) that ingredient is worm casting , you just mix it half and half with your seed starting mix, give it a try! We harvested three broccoli plants in the last two weeks; we also harvested three cauliflower heads this week they weighed 4lb. 12 oz., 4lb. 9 oz. ,and 4lb. 8 oz. they're huge. My tomatoes are still growing strong despite the cold weather. . I'm really proud of you defeating the dreaded RKN . Thank you for a great video

I would be curious to see if you did Sweet Potatoes again and what the results will be next time. Great job on wrecking those RKNs. I'm going do a regimen of Worm tea as part of my fertilization routine as well as the castings.

Hi Jen, so glad to hear that you are winning the battle against the dreaded RKN. Remind never to get on your bad side! ha. I did many of the same things you did, relying heavily on French Marigolds and Crab Meal along with some soil solarization. I planted two crops of French Marigolds leaving all roots and foliage in and on the soil where I intend to plant sweet potatoes (if I can ever get them to sprout some slips!). Covered with compost just as you did. Good Luck!

Wew nice job! Those are some strict lab requirements 🤣. Are the RKN just in the soil? Or is there something to do to avoid getting them in the first place?

The LSU Purple Fig tree was discovered to be more resistant than other varieties to these nematodes too. In Louisiana we add lots of mulch under fig trees to slowly create mounds of rich soil that resist nematodes. In fall you can grow Red Ripper Peas beneath the trees and train the vines to stay on the ground and when they`re done you can add winter greens, carrots, turnips etc.

Hi Jen, I have a similar setup to yours except for the method of hanging the lights and a 48” shelf I purchased from Sam’s for $99. I gave up on the carabiner. Instead, I ran some paracord through the hole in the clip used for mounting direct to ceiling and clips onto the lamp. Tied a knot in it, clipped it back onto the lamp. Then ran the paracord up through the upper shelf grid and ran the other end to the front of the shelf and tied it off leaving some free length for lowering. That way I need zero clearance for the lamps and still can move them up or down. Easier to put them up higher and put the seed trays on boxes to get them closer to the lights for seed trays. Have been using these shop lights for months and have yet to change height. I use 4, LED 48" 6500 Lumen, 5500 kelvin shop lights daisy chained. Purchased from Amazon for $10 each, and 1 Mars Hydro TS1000. Love the Mars unit as it has variable intensity. They are expensive but I found a deal on one at Amazon Resale as a returned item for $84, normally $110. Press on. Good videos. Stay warm! Freeze tonight in 9b in Ponte Vedra Beach.

Hi Jen, to adjust your lights, you could use chains for lights. Go down the chain section in the hardware store and then get some S hooks then you could move the lights as high as the S hooks

A little tip that I learned is the use of mirrors. You can find them at thrift stores or you can also get the mirror tiles from a home improvement store. You multiply the lighting without the added electricity. ❤❤🙏

So i also have the issue of the ratchet stealing height. So what i did was just attach the lights on the shelf… and if I want the seedling to be closer to the light i just put some blocks or pots under the tray. They grow fast anyways. I also have the adjustable height from epic gardening. :) thanks for the vid. Curious about shop lights vs grow lights .. if there really is a difference

Hey Jenn. 5000lbs. is CRAZY! That's a pickup truck! Please don't test it out.😂 Been a while since I looked at lights. I bought a couple SpiderFarmer knock-offs 5 yrs. ago. They were just over $50 and 100 watts, still working great. What are those peppers? My sweet bells are a little further along, my super hots are a little behind but begining to take off. Need to get outside but to cold. Always great to see U and have a quick chat. Oh, U must have prayed for my tomatoes as requested. I've been harvesting 25 every other day for the last 2 weeks.

That’s a nice setup! It fits perfectly in that space. I wouldn’t know what to put there 🤣. Couldn’t you just have your husband tie some knots with heavier monofilament instead of using the carabiners? It doesn’t seem like you would need to move them very often, and you could just cut them off when you need to move them. You have inspired me and I think I will get some seeds started this weekend as well 🤔. Going to do cucumber in pots 🤣.

Hi Jen, I enjoyed your video. If I may share a tip. I noticed all the light on your walls around your rack. That is wasted light. I suggest that you use some aluminum foil Shiney side towards your plants to reflect the light back towards your plants. Use painter tape so it doesn't leave residue on your rack. I have done this for past 3 years with a noticeable difference. Blessings to you and your family. Garden on!

Nice setup. I have the same type of shelves that I got from either Sam's or Costco. Currently storing my garden supplies on it in our covered patio, but may convert a shelf or two as a seedling setup like you did with yours. I only have 1 grow light that I already had when I was dabbling with when I did indoor hydroponics.

Jen: Good complete video. I purchased a grow rack that is 48"w x 24" d x 72" h is has six shelves but I only assembled it with five shelves. the weight capacity of each shelf is eight hundred pounds ( I don't think I will ever exceed that load I chose the 24" w shelves in. order to place two 10" x 20" trays back to back. The shelves are height adjustable. I have yet to mount the lights, I have two 48" shop lights, and a 36" x 36" grow light plus the two little grow lights. I guess I need to purchase some lights.. My suggestion to you regarding height adjustment would be to purchase some small chain and small S hooks . I am curios about grow light vs shop lights. I meant to ask you from a prior video; do you like your hot water on demand heater and is it fueled by natural gas or propane? Look foward to your response. By the way your eyes look great.
@SpaceCoastHarvest
@SpaceCoastHarvest 2 күн бұрын
Sounds like you have a pretty similar setup! It is much easier with a rack isn't it? I was really annoyed trying to use table or counter space for seed starting, lol. A chain and S hooks is a great idea! I'll look around at some options for that. I LOVE the tankless water heater. We really never run out of hot water. It heats up a little slower than a tank water heater, but you get used to it. You just change your habits a little bit, like instead of turning on the water and getting right in the shower, I'll turn it on, then brush my teeth, then get in.

@@SpaceCoastHarvest I'm still curious about what fuels your tankless water heater natural gas, propane or electricity? The Rusted Gardener suggest that you leave your grow light elevation fixed and adjust your seed starting trays by placing something under them, it sounds like a good option. Try sour cream on your collard greens if you don't like the pepper sauce. i meant to tease you in previous post you used the word "actually " twice . Thanks again for the video and your prompt response.

I use the same type of shelves but I adjust the height between the lights and plants using some different sized Amazon boxes. Central Florida here. I don't have the patience (or back) for outdoor gardening because the earth is solid lime and soil is expensive, and woodland creatures get into everything. But lettuce grows well indoors in small pots under grow lights. I greatly admire what you're doing and willingness to share.

I made it to the end so am coming back to comment again 😂 if you’re planning to undertake a project involving your rain gutters have you considered also designing/building the gutter install to have the ability to collect rain water? - if you’re not able to access a well for watering the garden rain water is such a blessing to your plants and garden instead of chlorinated water imho - not using chlorinated/treated water has really helped in my battle with soil funguses and viruses and the project/materials to collect the rain are simpler and less inexpensive to incorporate than I at first thought it to be. I’m also a Floridian - north central area - and our weather is so temperamental isn’t it? Keeps the weather folks on their toes 😂 - I grow culantro and Cuban oregano to utilize when my cilantro is being hot headed (bolting) two other plants that do well in this heat that I have are Malabar spinach and mitsubi(?) aka Japanese parsley - and both have survived the cold we have experienced the last couple of winter seasons.
