Try reading the instruction on the drinking bird. It needs a glass of water to drink from. You dip the head into the glass, then set the bird to the side so its beak dips in the water each time it tips over. The evaporating water causes a temperature difference between the head and body and causes the fluid inside to bubble to the top. Then it tips again and rewets the beak for the next cycle. It will continue as long as you keep enough water in the glass for the beak to rewet itself. It is not perpetual motion because it needs to keep having water added to the glass.

The little bulb with the black squares in it is Crookes Radiometer. Inside the bulb is a vacuum but not a perfect vacuum. The black side of the squares then absorb more infrared radiation than the white side which in turn causes the black side to get hotter than the white. Once this happens the very small amount of air still inside will rise from the black square causing a minuscule amount of thrust and since there’s a vacuum there’s hardly any air resistance to slow it down. It was invented to show off a new window pane technology that blocked heat from the sun for a demo home. Since the radiometer works off of infrared energy. I suggest using a toaster oven or space heater that uses a quartz element to really make it spin once the quartz rods fully heat up they will emit a lot of infrared energy even a campfire would work.

Much like the wireless chargers in phones. It is repelling against a permanent magnet in the base of the bulb, which also has an induction antenna. That antenna is is conveying power to the LED "filaments" in the bulb. The switch on the base turns off the transmitting coil which turns off the power to the induction coil in the bulb base. The switch activates and deactivates due to electromagnetic induction and interference which is why you don't actually have to touch the swithc.

17:24 That is a Crookes Radiometer also known as a Solar Engine. This doesn't rely on heating to operate, rather the rotor and flaps are inside a vacuum. When light hits the black surface, due to photon interactions with the surface material, the photon's momentum is transferred to the rotor flap. While some thermal expansion does occur, there is no medium inside the bulb to create thrust through thermal expansion. The entire unit operates solely from photon momentum exchange. In effect each of the flaps is a solar sail. Each of these Solar Engines actually have a maximal rotational speed, based on the surface area of the sails, their radial position relative to the spindle, and the maximal energy they can interact with the lights. In this case, assuming perfect interaction, and virtually no friction with the central spindle, this unit can reach approximately a rotational velocity of 1,200 RPM, or 125-126 rad/s. This unit will not exceed this amount, no matter how many lumens you throw at it. Although if you tested with lasers, it might exceed this limit briefly.

This is the common, incorrect, explanation. The rotor spins the opposite direction to what it would if it was due to photon momentum.

The drinking bird needs a glass of cold water. It uses the cold water to condense the fluids inside which helps it swing, then the bulb evaporates them once more. So the energy to run doesn't come from batteries but instead it's a (well disguised) heat motor using the differential between cold water and warm room conditions to keep the motion going. It's pretty cool once you know how it works, and one of my favourite heat engines. The falling bird was also pretty fun as a child. I used to love mine. The motion obviously isn't as well disguised, but as a toy it can be cool. Usually looks a lot better than on video if you don't abuse it.

I love this video because you make guesses at how some of these things work, but flat out admit to not knowing. It's awesome to see someone curious about some of these simple machines that are not perpetual motion, but demonstrate some fundamental properties of physics! The floating lightbulb has two parts - it floats because of an electromagnet; the reason that it takes a second after disconnecting power is because the capacitors are still discharging. The second part, which powers the lightbulb, is an inductor ring that generates a small electric field that powers the LEDs in the lightbulb. It uses the same principles as the magnetic charger that sticks to the back of your cellphone. The Crookes radiometer (the "bulb" with white and black squares) couldn't accelerate any more because of the friction and "wobble" of the axle. If you examine the high speed footage you shot, you can see it bouncing around in the socket. If the socket had been more precisely milled for that axle/spindle it would have accelerated to a higher speed; alas, not likely to fly apart. Awesome lamps though! The small top that you thought was "held up by weight" is a Gyroscope. The principles are a little long winded to put here in this already oversized comment, but if you google it, you'll find the answers. Oh, and the Stirling Engine slowed down because it was heat-soaked. Good luck, and stay thirsty for knowledge!

The levitating lightbulb "Flyte bulb" works on some pretty basic electromagnetic concepts to levitate the bulb base and allow it to inductively couple enough energy to light a few LED filaments. You have an electromagnet in the wood base and a permanent magnet in the bulb base and that allows the bulb to levitate when balanced properly over the electromagnetic field emitted by the base. That same electromagnetic field also allows a small coil in the base of the bulb to inductively couple and provide a few watts of power to the LEDs in the bulb very similar to how some phones can be wirelessly charged using the same concept.

@XtomJamesExtra6 ай бұрын
Delay in the Floating Bulb: When you energize an electromagnet it is generating an electromagnetic field, that field is dependent upon the coil density of the electromagnet. The field density determines the electron capacity and shed of the magnetic field. There is also likely a capacitor feeding power to that electromagnet. When you unplug the base unit, there is still power in the capacitor which is still feeding power to the electromagnet. Hence the delay. Given the delay we can determine the capacitance of that capacitor is roughly 92 mF (micro-Farads). This means that the electromagnet in the base unit is likely 500-700 turns at 0.45 Tesla in strength.

I mean technically the light spinner one is the most "perpetual" of the group by a huge margin, but even that can't go indefinitely. At some point, any light source you point at it will inevitably burn out (sun included) which means it has a finite (and thus not perpetual) motion to it. However, in a perfect setup you could have one that outlasts many generations without needing to be touched.

The lightbulb is on even though there are no wires because the energy is reaching the bulb via an electromagnetic field. Magnetism and electricity are really like two sides of the same coin :>

Yes you wright, it's called electric induction, an it's taught at schools. Shocking!

btw, the gyroscope, with a motor attached, is how large boats do stabilization. It counterbalances the rocking of the ship. Granted, it is a much larger gyroscope. Also, that same effect is how you stay balanced on a bicycle.

Batteries equal not perpetual motion

For the spinning light thingy, with the black and silver shields. For an energy source, instead of the studio lights, try using a laser source. Lasers are an extremely concentrated light source, even more than your studio lights. I don't think a simple laser-pen will do much, though. Tricky thing with high powered lasers, they aren't without risk, so safety is in order when using these! (I mean, welding laser melts steel, what you think it does to your skin or eyes, ey?)

6:40 dude you put it together backwards. look at its feet versus the way its bending lol. might work better if put together correctly.

That 2nd balancing thing, my grandparents had one that was a horse that just rocked back & forth. Not perpetual motion, but as a kid, it had me perpetually making it do its thing.

Dude the "drinking bird" wasn't even put together correctly the legs are BACKWARDS. Also you might wanna actually READ the INSTRUCTIONS! Because you DO need VERY COLD or ice water to wet the beak/head of the "bird" thoroughly an then it'll work. Also NO this is NOT perpetual motion! It actually works through THERMODYNAMICS!

The radiometer has gas inside, so it is drag that prevents it from spinning faster. Drag grows by velocity squared and i suspect that the energy that keeps it rotating is linear, you can put a lot more energy in the system but the speed only grows very tiny amount, to double the speed you need to square the energy.

Tyler, try a new sterling(same type) over a boiling cup of water and heat the water to try & get it spinning faster. As far as the drinking bird, the birds beak needs to be put into water as well. Finally, the spinning fins inside the glass ball... It's the heat source, not the light source that makes them faster. Please make another video with the fixes to these 3 at least!!

The ‘drinking bird’ is actually quite clever, you need a glass of cold water for its nose to dip into, and the thermal difference from that and the red chemical in the bulb at the bottom syphons the red chemical up the inner stem, and makes it drink again, the cycle repeats as long as the nose can dip into the cold water 👍

My aunt used to have the drinking bird sitting on a window sill. As others have said, it needs a glass of water, and heat from the sun also heats up the liquid in the bird to make it swing better. And put the feet on the right way around!
