I've decided to add some books to my reading list which I was hesitant about, after hearing your reviews... Godkiller and Red Rising, which I've been unsure about for years. Hoping your reading is going well :)

Thank you, I hope you enjoy them! February and March have been way more gaming focused, so there wasn't that much reading happening. In the secon half of April I slowly shifted back a little bit and stepped up the pace again. Luckily, I've started a 3 1/2 week vacation period just yesterday and I'll be flying to Greece on Sunday, which means there will be lots of reading happening during the vacation.

I got sent The Burning Land by the publisher and truly didn’t even know this series was starting but I am very hopeful it will be good. I do need to get to this one soon :) would always be happy to try a buddy read. Haven’t done any buddy reads in a long time so would be fun! RJB’s series I’m intrigued by. Going to see what others think of it before I go for it myself but I definitely think it could be fun. Richard Swan I should probably try out soon! Hopefully I’ll enjoy them. Fathomfolk has such a beautiful cover and yet there’s so many recently with this style of cover I keep getting them all confused. Not sure it they’re all the same cover artist or it’s just a common theme at the moment, but this world sounds really cool.

Buddy Reading The Burning Lands sounds like a great idea. I think in the next two weeks I'm going to prioritize Trials of Empire, The Tainted Cup and Morning Star, but I have a one week vacation coming up later in February, so I'm pretty sure I could fit it into my tbr in second half of February. Just let me know, when you want to start it. :) I'm pretty excited for the Tainted Cup as it reminds me more of the Divine Cities than Foundryside and I loved that trilogy. Richard Swan is so good. I'm really intrigued by Fathomfolk. I heard the author on a podcast and she said she wanted to write an immigration/migration story and the conflicts surrounding those topics. But she said when modern fantasy does those things it's often done from a perspective from a western city/country and she wanted the city to feel more eastern inspired.

Seems like you’ve read some good ones in January. I really enjoyed Pierce Brown’s series and I should really go back for the later books after that first trilogy. Glad you read so many great titles! I also liked Islington’s series and yet I still need to finish it as I’ve only read the first two. I definitely need to get on with the third at some point soon as I’m now reading The Will of the Many and that one is really feeling strong so far! The James S A Corey series I enjoyed at first and then slowly sort of plateaued too and haven’t actually continued. Anthony Ryan’s series I definitely need to try out soon too as I loved previous books by him. I should definitely try this too.

Yes, it was a really encouraging start to the reading year. I'll try to go through the Pierce Brown books now like 1 a month, so a project for the first half of the year. I was really impressed with the Will of the Many, so it's interesting now to go back to Licanius. I'm really hoping that the last Expanse books work a little better for me and get back on track with the elements that fascinated me in the beginning. Yes, Anthony Ryan seems to be an author that works really well for me in his newer series.

This morning I finished one audiobook (yey), so there's 3 left to go.

I have pre-ordered the Tainted Cup too and one part of me is really looking forward to it, the other one is a bit hesitant because I really loved the Devine City Books but didn't get along that good with Foundryside. Although the latter could be a "it was me and not the book" case. But the premise of the new one sounds so good. On the last day of February there is a mystery coming out that I've also pre-ordered (Everyone On This Train Is A Suspect - in case some of your viewers enjoy mysteries too ^^) Until then, February is going to be a gaming month because I got myself a PS5 as a treat for successfully finishing some work related stuff, which caused me lots trouble. Hope you have a lovely weekend and happy reading.

It feels a little bit like that for me. I loved the Divine Cities and so far I've read Foundrysite and Shorfall and they were okay for me, but I still need to read Locklands. I bet there are some mystery lovers here as well, so thank you for the recommendation. :) And enjoy your PS5! Awesome. I only know Abercrombie. :/ Abercrombie is still on the need-to-check-out list; same with Sanderson (Mistborn). I do not own these books yet. I compared our books on goodreads. There were no big changes in the past years though. We both have "Opfermond" and "Der Kinderdieb" on our to-read list. "Opfermond" belongs to my ancient-tbr-list, it is so sad. My plan is to read it this year for sure. Absolute Highlights were kinda rare in the most recent years. 2020-2022 I had 0 five-star books. D: Sure some 4 stars and there you could often argue if 4 or 5 stars are right but yeah... Still some where fun or had impressive parts. Fantasywise I liked Nina Blazon (I had high expectations, so some were disappoining on the one hand, but on the other hand some scenes were magnificent!) and I also had quite some fun time with the Grisha trilogy (in my head it was like a Final Fantasy game). In 2023 my greatest reading time I had for example with The Hobbit and the original story of Peter Pan. Currentling I am reading Lord of the Rings. I read it in English, it will take a good amount of time to finish. I could nearly do the same video since I have been absent too for a while and also only do videos once in a while nowadays. Just checked, I would also start with 2018 till 2022. About 2023 I have already talked about the first half of the year 2023, second half is still missing. You were not really gone for me since I still had you on goodreads. :)

The Abercrombie books are definitely enjoyable. I would be very interested in your opinion on them. I'm not completely sure, but I think you had Opfermond in one of the streams that you used to do and I bought it because of that. I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed the Grisha journey, because we at least started it together. I actually read the Hobbit only once, when I was an adult. Lord of the Rings is one of the series I've read in German and re-read it twice in English, but I think my last re-read was in the late 90s. Oh, and I also bought Peter Pan last year or the year before, because I never read it. But as a child I listened to the audio play (which I think was based on the Disney movie) a lot. And of course I would be interested in seeong your favorite books. :)

Do you think the Ruin of kings would work as an audiobook? I love to listen but very few fantasy novels work as audiobooks. Probably due to a large cast of characters with very unusual names 🤦🏼♀️
@Bittenbyaradioactivebook Жыл бұрын
I think that this series works better, when you read it, because there are so many small things that you can pick up on. I usually swap inbetween reading and listening with all my books, but with this series I missed some things with audio. Generally, what I normally suggest, is to read about 10% of a fantasy novel and the start swapping between audio and reading.

It has already been 4 months since I read The Pariah, it's about time. But tbh I also totally forgot about it, although it's prominently sitting on my shelf. 🙈 Jenn Lyons books were on my radar for a while now. But they were not very high on my priority list, but what you said about it sounded exciting. I think I will move them up on my tbr. ;) Same for Mathew Ward, but these books are so "small" 🤣 I'm so glad that you found your way back to the Red Rising series and are enjoying it. It's absoluteyl woth it and the smashing gets worse 😂 And last but not least good luck tackeling all the Cosmere Books! You said something...I totally forgot that the Sunlit man was marked as a Cosmere novel. So it most propably will be interesting for the next Stormlight book. But there is still a lot of time to read it ;)
@Bittenbyaradioactivebook Жыл бұрын
Yes, this is me trying to organize my reading a bit more. I always have 24 books in my currently-reading pool and this year I want to split that into 10 slots for finishing started series, 10 free slots for mood reads and starting new stuff and 4 slots for buddy reads. We'll see how that'll develop. 🤣 I'm quite interested to hear your thoughts on The Martyr, so you're welcome for the reminder. ;) Both Jenn Lyons and Matthew Ward are highly recommended from what I've read so far. And the good thing abou Red Rising getting worse is that it is this kind of "10 out of 10 - would suffer again" feeling. Yes, Sunlit Man seems to be from the pov from a Roshar character and some people mentioned in their reviews that they felt odd, because he always hints at things and events that happened to him which aren't part of Stormlight yet. So I'm thinking it might be interesting to read it as foreshadowing before Stormlight 5, but reading it after could be less confusing. But we're Malazan readers, so I love a good foreshadowing.

I eventually want to read the Otherland series by Tad Williams. I have read most of his fantasy books, including Memory, Sorrow and Thorn; The Last King of Osten Ard; and Shadowmarch. I greatly enjoyed those series, so I am excited to try out Otherland. I have completed both The Expanse and The Dagger and the Coin, and overall I had a great time throughout both series. After hearing your thoughts about Matthew Ward's Legacy trilogy I am planning to try it out, it sounds like something I would enjoy! Some of the series I would like to finish this year include: - The Dandelion Dynasty by Ken Liu (I've read the first two) - The Earthsea Cycle by Ursula K. Le Guin (I've read the first three) - The Traitor Son Cycle by Miles Cameron (I've read the first two)

I'm so bad with Tad Williams. I've read evey first book in Memory Sword and Thorn, Shadowmarch and Otherland, but never followed up. I hope that I can at least finish Otherland this year. That sounds very promising for all the series Daniel Abraham is involved in. The Legacy series is highly enjoyable so far. I've started with Legacy of Steel last weekend and read a summary of the first book before, which prepared me quite well. And I'm having a blast so far. Definitely one of the books I'm really looking forward to, when picking it up. I'm at the same spot with Dandelion Dynasty. I've read both Grace of Kings and Wall of Storms shortly after their release, but never continued. This might be a re-read plus finish project for next year. Earthsea is such a staple of the genre and I still haven't read it. Everytime I hear about it, I think that I should pick it up at some point, but then I'm always way to occupied with everything else. Traitor Son is one of my favorite series of all time and actually a series I have already finished.

Happy Weekend! For me, "Eleventh Cycle" was a ride, I won't forget that soon. It was one of those reads, I wanted to stop immediately but for some reason couldn't actually make myself, continue anyway but constantly wondering why. I agree though, there is an answer to that "why" and all the cruelty didn't feel like they were there, just for the sake of it. But the writing and prose didn't really work for me. Some of the stylistic devices, like similes and metaphors didn't click, and certain phrases were repeated so often, they stopped my reading flow. My favourite book in December was a re-read of "The Count of Monte Cristo" - not really fantasy or sci-fi related but it's an all time favourite of mine and is due a re-read on a regular basis. The rest of the month was dedicated to all the Christmas extravaganza with family and friends, the occasional gaming and making all the huge plans for the reading year 2024.

Hi Sam! Thank you! I'm doing well. And as 2023 was a year that I was able to incorporate reading better again between work and gaming, I#d thought the best way to keep that momentum going was a return to Booktube. Gotta read to have content. :) I hope you, your fiance and your family are well and that you can enjoy the weeks leading up to your wedding (hype!) withouth having too much planning stress. :)
